You can install Jellyfin on many Debian- and Ubuntu-family systems without entering each repository command manually. Jellyfin’s official install-debuntu.sh Bash script configures the repository and installs the Jellyfin packages for you. You still need to download and verify the script, run it with administrator privileges, and complete Jellyfin’s web-based server setup afterward.
What the Jellyfin script actually automates
Jellyfin describes install-debuntu.sh as a deployment helper for Debian, Ubuntu, and derivatives. It handles repository installation and package installation, eliminating the usual sequence of adding a signing key, writing an APT source, refreshing package indexes, and installing the Jellyfin metapackage.
The script attempts to recognize common derivatives, including Linux Mint editions based on Ubuntu or Debian, Raspbian/Raspberry Pi OS, and KDE neon. This is not a guarantee for every release: derivative support depends on how closely the distribution follows its Debian or Ubuntu base, and Jellyfin invites pull requests for additional common derivatives.

1. Check the prerequisites
The documented script workflow requires curl and sha256sum. Install them with your distribution’s package manager if they are missing. You also need an account permitted to use sudo and enough disk space for the server packages and your library metadata.

- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
2. Download the script and checksum
Download both files from Jellyfin’s Linux installation documentation: install-debuntu.sh and its matching install-debuntu.sh.sha256sum. Keep them in the same directory; the checksum file refers to the script by filename.
3. Verify the download
From that directory, run:
sha256sum -c install-debuntu.sh.sha256sum
A successful verification reports an OK result. If the check fails, do not execute the script. Download both files again and investigate the mismatch rather than bypassing verification.

4. Inspect the script if you want to review it
Because this is a privileged shell script, you can read it before execution:
less install-debuntu.sh
Reviewing it is optional, but it lets you see the repository and package operations that will run as root.

5. Execute it with sudo
sudo bash install-debuntu.sh
The script adds the appropriate Jellyfin repository configuration and installs Jellyfin. Follow any prompts from your operating system. When it completes, open the Jellyfin server’s web interface from a browser on your network and finish the first-run wizard, including the administrator account, media-library paths, and playback preferences.
What you still configure after installation
The installer does not decide how your media is organized or configure every server option. You must provide the folders containing movies, television, music, or other media; choose whether those folders are local, mounted, or on another storage system; and set network access, users, libraries, metadata preferences, and transcoding options in Jellyfin.

The package installation also does not select hardware. Hardware-accelerated transcoding depends on the host’s processor or graphics device, operating-system support, drivers, and Jellyfin settings. Treat the script as package deployment, not a complete media-server design.

Jellyfin recommends containers for distributions outside the script’s supported scope. Docker Compose is also useful when you want the server definition, mounts, ports, and restart policy kept in a file that can be moved or recreated on another Linux host.

The official container image is jellyfin/jellyfin. A Compose deployment needs persistent configuration and cache locations plus at least one host directory containing your media. A minimal arrangement follows the documented pattern:
services:
jellyfin:
image: jellyfin/jellyfin
container_name: jellyfin
user: "1000:1000"
ports:
- "8096:8096/tcp"
- "7359:7359/udp"
volumes:
- /srv/jellyfin/config:/config
- /srv/jellyfin/cache:/cache
- /srv/media:/media:ro
restart: 'unless-stopped'
Adjust the host paths and user ID to your system. The configuration and cache directories should remain persistent when the container is recreated. Mount media directories explicitly; adding a media mount does not create or organize the files for you. The documentation also shows optional custom-font mounts and the JELLYFIN_PublishedServerUrl environment variable for deployments that need to advertise a particular server URL.
Networking and DLNA
Container networking is a deliberate choice. The documented Docker CLI setup says host networking is optional in general but required for DLNA discovery. If you use DLNA, run the container with host networking rather than relying only on published ports. Without DLNA, the Compose example publishes TCP port 8096 for the web service and UDP port 7359 for Jellyfin discovery.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteScript or Compose? Use this decision table
| Consideration | Official script | Docker Compose |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Debian, Ubuntu, and supported derivatives | Other Linux distributions or repeatable container deployments |
| Privilege model | Runs package and repository operations with sudo |
Requires Docker installation and permission to manage containers; host paths and permissions remain your responsibility |
| Updates | Use the distribution package/repository update path | Pull and recreate the container image according to your chosen update process |
| Storage | Jellyfin is installed as host packages; you choose library locations afterward | You must define persistent /config, /cache, and media mounts |
| Networking | Uses the host service and its firewall configuration | Published ports are explicit; host networking is required for DLNA |
| Hardware acceleration | Uses native host integration, subject to drivers and hardware | Requires passing through and configuring compatible host hardware; container behavior varies by platform |
Important platform limitations
Jellyfin publishes official container images through Docker Hub and GitHub Container Registry for multiple architectures. However, the container documentation warns that Windows and macOS container use is unsupported for some features, including hardware-accelerated transcoding and macOS media scanning, and recommends native installation on those platforms. The Bash installer described here is for Debian/Ubuntu-family Linux systems, not Windows or macOS.
Manual installation when you do not want the script
You can perform the same repository setup yourself. Jellyfin’s documented manual path is to install curl and gnupg, enable Ubuntu’s Universe repository when required, install Jellyfin’s signing key, write the repository definition, run sudo apt update, and install the jellyfin metapackage. Manage the resulting service with systemctl or the service command. This route gives you line-by-line control but has more opportunities for a typo or an incorrect repository entry.
Quick Recap
Common failure points
- Checksum mismatch: Do not run the file; redownload the script and checksum together.
- Unsupported derivative: Check the distribution’s base and release compatibility. Use Docker when the script does not recognize the system.
- Permission errors on media: Ensure the Jellyfin service account, or the container user ID, can read the library directories.
- Missing DLNA devices: Use host networking for the container and verify that the host firewall permits local discovery traffic.
- Transcoding problems: Confirm host drivers, device access, and Jellyfin acceleration settings; changing from native installation to a container can change what hardware is visible.
