Choose Jellyfin if your priorities are no software fees, open-source code, self-hosting, and keeping your media system independent of a central account service. Choose Plex if you want a polished account-based experience, a broadly documented client lineup, and one app that combines your own library with Plex’s free, ad-supported Movies & Shows and Live TV.

The biggest cost detail is Plex remote playback. Since April 29, 2025, remote personal-video playback on affected Plex apps requires Plex Pass on the server administrator or viewer account, or a Remote Watch Pass on the viewer account. Playback on the same local network remains free. Jellyfin’s server and official clients are free, but you provide and maintain the server hardware and network.

Jellyfin vs. Plex at a glance

Both products turn a computer or compatible device into a personal media server. You store movies, shows, music, photos, books or television recordings on that server, then use an app or browser to play them elsewhere. The important differences are the service model around that server: Jellyfin presents itself as free software without a premium tier, while Plex combines personal media with account-connected services and optional subscriptions.

Question Jellyfin Plex
Software cost The project says its server and official clients are free to download, now and always. The Plex Media Server is free to use. Local personal-media playback is free; some advanced and remote features require a subscription arrangement.
Remote personal video No Jellyfin subscription is described in the project material. You must configure your own remote access securely. On affected apps, a Plex Pass on the server admin or viewer account, or a viewer Remote Watch Pass, is required under the policy that began April 29, 2025.
Privacy and accounts Jellyfin says it has no tracking, phone-home, or central servers collecting user data. It is designed to run on your system. Remote access and some online features use Plex accounts. Optional watched-state sync associates an account ID, title GUID and change date/time with the sync record.
Client ecosystem Official apps are available, but the material here does not establish a complete, current device matrix. Plex documents browser, mobile, desktop, smart-TV, streaming-device and game-console clients. Support is device- and version-specific.
Transcoding Documents hardware acceleration for compatible Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Apple and Rockchip hardware. HDR-to-SDR tone mapping may be needed for some files. Hardware-accelerated streaming is listed as a Plex Pass feature when compatible server hardware is available.
Best fit People comfortable managing a self-hosted system who want maximum control and minimal service dependence. People who value documented device coverage, account-based sharing and integrated streaming features.

Neither project is universally better. The right choice depends on where you watch, whether you watch remotely, which formats your files use, and how much server maintenance you want to handle.

What Jellyfin and Plex actually do

Jellyfin: a self-hosted, free-software media system

Jellyfin describes itself as free software that streams your media from a dedicated server to end-user devices. Its project pages describe libraries for movies, television shows, music, Live TV and DVR, books and photos. The server runs on hardware you control; clients connect to that server over your home network or through a remote-access setup that you configure.

There is no premium Jellyfin license tier in the project description. “Free” refers to the software, not to electricity, storage, an internet connection, a domain name, or a computer capable of serving your files. If you already have a suitable computer, your initial software cost can be zero. If you need more storage or reliable transcoding, hardware becomes the practical expense.

Plex: personal media plus account-connected services

Plex Media Server organizes your files and makes them available through Plex clients. Plex also combines that library with its own free, ad-supported Movies & Shows and Live TV services. This integrated catalog can be useful if you want one interface for owned media and streaming channels, but it also means more of the experience is tied to a Plex account and Plex’s service policies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plex documents server installations for Windows, macOS, Linux, NVIDIA SHIELD and many NAS devices. Its client documentation covers web browsers, Android and iOS, desktop platforms, smart TVs, streaming devices and consoles. Treat that list as a starting point: a particular model, operating-system version or app release can have different capabilities, so check the exact device you plan to use.

Cost: software is free, but the use case changes the answer

Is Jellyfin free?

According to the Jellyfin project homepage, “The Jellyfin server and official clients are free to download, now and always.” There is no stated paid tier that unlocks remote video, hardware acceleration or a larger client catalog. You still pay for the machine that stores and serves your media, drives, backup storage, networking equipment and any remote-access service you choose.

Does Plex require a subscription?

Plex says the Plex Media Server is free to use, and personal-media playback on the same local network is free. Plex Pass adds features including remote streaming, hardware-accelerated streaming, offline downloads, over-the-air DVR recording with a compatible tuner and antenna, intro and credit skipping, and premium Plexamp features. Plex also offers Remote Watch Pass as a narrower remote-streaming option; Plex says that pass does not include the other Plex Pass benefits.

Can I watch my Plex server remotely for free?

Not always. Plex’s remote personal-video policy began on April 29, 2025. When the player cannot connect to the server on the same subnet or local network, the affected apps require one of these arrangements:

  • The server administrator has Plex Pass.
  • The viewer has Plex Pass.
  • The viewer has Remote Watch Pass.

A Plex Pass held by the server administrator covers remote video for users accessing that server. A viewer’s Remote Watch Pass is tied to that viewer’s account. The policy applies to Android, iOS, PlayStation, Plex desktop apps, Roku, supported smart TVs, the web player and Xbox; Plex says additional apps may be added.

The rule is about the connection and media type, not simply a setting labeled “remote.” Plex notes that VPNs, containers, network configuration and local-connection settings can make a setup that appears local count as remote. Remote music in Plexamp and photos in Plex Photos are excluded from this restriction. Therefore, saying “all Plex remote access is paid” is inaccurate: local playback remains free, and treatment differs by app and media type.

Privacy and account dependence

What Jellyfin says about privacy

Jellyfin’s homepage states: “Jellyfin has no tracking, phone-home, or central servers collecting your data.” It also says the project does not run servers for users. Those statements support describing Jellyfin as privacy-oriented and self-hosted according to the project’s own position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They do not guarantee that every deployment is private. Your router, reverse proxy, remote-access method, plugins, operating-system updates, passwords, backups and host firewall all affect exposure. Publishing a server directly to the internet without understanding authentication and encryption can undermine the privacy advantages of self-hosting.

How Plex’s account model affects data

Plex uses accounts for remote access and several online features. Its optional watched-state and ratings sync documentation gives a concrete example of the information associated with an account: the Plex account user ID, the title GUID and the date and time when the watched state changed. Plex says the feature is designed so Plex does not know what content may be located on a personal Plex server.

This is a narrower, documented example rather than proof that Plex scans or shares every user’s complete library. The practical distinction is that Jellyfin emphasizes operation without a central service, while Plex’s sharing and synchronization features depend more visibly on an account and vendor infrastructure.

Playback: direct play, transcoding and HDR

Direct play is the simplest path

When a client supports a file’s container, video codec, audio codec, subtitles and bitrate, the server can usually send the original stream without changing it. This is commonly called direct play. It reduces CPU or GPU work and avoids quality changes caused by conversion, but support varies by client. A television app that accepts H.264 and AAC may not accept the same file with an unusual audio track, subtitle format or high bitrate.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When server-side transcoding is needed

Transcoding converts a file to something the client or connection can handle. Triggers include an unsupported codec, a bitrate higher than the connection can sustain, incompatible subtitles, a mobile data limit or a need to convert high-dynamic-range video for a standard-dynamic-range display.

Jellyfin documents client transcoding profiles that describe codecs, resolutions, bitrates and other constraints. The server chooses settings within its capabilities. Its documentation lists hardware-accelerated transcoding for compatible modern Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Apple and Rockchip GPUs. Jellyfin also notes that HDR sources may require HDR-to-SDR tone mapping and that it currently does not support HDR-to-HDR tone mapping or passing through HDR metadata. These behaviors depend on the installed software version and hardware.

Plex lists hardware-accelerated streaming and transcoding as a Plex Pass feature when compatible server hardware is available. That subscription requirement is separate from whether a particular file can direct-play. Actual performance depends on the CPU or GPU, codec, resolution, HDR path, client, settings and number of simultaneous streams. The available material does not establish that either system is universally faster.

Devices and client availability

Why Plex may be the safer choice for mixed households

Plex publishes support across browsers, phones and tablets, desktop applications, smart TVs, dedicated streaming devices and game consoles. If family members use several brands of television and consoles, that documented breadth can reduce the need to find a workaround for each screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility is not a guarantee of identical features. An older television may lack newer codecs, a console app may expose fewer server controls, and an app update can change requirements. Confirm the exact model and operating-system version before buying hardware or promising remote access to other users.

What can be concluded about Jellyfin clients

Jellyfin provides official clients, but the material used for this comparison does not provide a complete, current device matrix equivalent to Plex’s support listing. Do not assume every Jellyfin client supports every feature or that every television has an official app. Check the current Jellyfin documentation and the app store for each device you own.

Server hardware: do you need a NAS or mini PC?

You need a host for either product, but you do not automatically need to buy a NAS or mini PC. An existing desktop, laptop or supported dedicated device may be sufficient for a small household, especially when clients can direct-play your files.

Use existing hardware when

  • Your media is stored locally and your primary clients support its formats.
  • You have enough disk space and a backup plan.
  • The computer can remain available when people want to watch.
  • Noise, power use and operating-system maintenance are acceptable.

Consider a NAS or mini PC when

  • You need centralized storage that is available without your main desktop running.
  • Several people will stream at once.
  • Your clients often require transcoding.
  • You want room for larger libraries, backups or additional services.

Plex lists computers, NVIDIA SHIELD and many NAS devices as compatible server hosts. Jellyfin’s hardware-transcoding documentation explains why a GPU-capable host can matter. The correct specification depends on your storage capacity, codecs, resolution, HDR requirements, number of concurrent streams and network layout. There is no responsible single model recommendation without those details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Setup and maintenance trade-offs

Jellyfin’s control comes with more responsibility

With Jellyfin, you choose the host, storage layout, authentication, remote-access method, update schedule and backup strategy. That control is valuable if you want to minimize outside dependencies or tailor the system to your network. It also means you are responsible for keeping the operating system and server updated, limiting internet exposure, managing user permissions and diagnosing client or transcoding problems.

Plex centralizes more of the experience

Plex’s account model can simplify sharing and access across supported clients, and its integrated streaming services reduce the need to switch applications. In return, your experience follows Plex’s account requirements, app support and changing remote-playback policy. If remote personal video is central to your use case, include the applicable Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass arrangement in the design rather than discovering the requirement after deployment.

Extra features that may decide the choice

Live TV and DVR

Both projects describe television-related use cases, but Plex’s documented DVR feature specifically requires Plex Pass, a compatible tuner and an antenna for over-the-air broadcasts. Reception quality and regional broadcast standards determine whether a tuner setup works in your location. Budget for the antenna, signal distribution and storage for recordings.

Integrated ad-supported streaming

Plex includes free, ad-supported Movies & Shows and Live TV services alongside personal libraries. Jellyfin’s project positioning centers on serving media you provide rather than bundling a vendor streaming catalog. Decide whether having both sources in one interface is useful or whether a self-contained personal library is preferable.

Offline downloads and playback enhancements

Plex lists offline downloads, intro and credit skipping and premium Plexamp features among Plex Pass benefits. A decision checklist

  1. List every playback device. Include television models, phones, browsers, consoles and streaming boxes. Verify app availability and supported formats for each one.
  2. Separate local and remote use. If everyone watches at home, Plex local playback remains free. If people watch personal video from outside your network, apply the April 29, 2025 Plex rule to the exact apps and accounts involved.
  3. Count viewers and streams. Concurrent remote streams and high-bitrate files increase bandwidth and transcoding requirements regardless of platform.
  4. Inspect your media formats. Record video codecs, audio tracks, subtitle types, resolution and HDR status. A direct-play-heavy library needs less server power.
  5. Choose a host you can maintain. Reuse an existing computer if it meets availability, storage and performance needs; consider a NAS or mini PC when those constraints justify dedicated hardware.
  6. Set your privacy boundary. Jellyfin minimizes central-service dependence according to its project statement. Plex’s account-based functions may be more convenient but involve vendor-connected features such as remote access and optional watched-state sync.
  7. Price the complete system. Include drives, backups, electricity, networking, a compatible tuner and antenna for DVR, and any Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass arrangement required for your remote viewers.

Frequently asked questions

Is Jellyfin better than Plex?

Jellyfin is better for free-software control, self-hosting and reducing dependence on a central account service. Plex is better for readers who prioritize a broad documented client ecosystem, account-based sharing and integrated ad-supported streaming. “Better” depends on those priorities rather than on a universal performance ranking.

Can Jellyfin be watched outside the home?

Jellyfin is designed to stream from your own server, so remote viewing is possible when you configure secure external access. The project material does not describe a subscription requirement, but you remain responsible for networking, authentication, encryption and bandwidth.

Does Plex Pass on the viewer cover remote video?

Yes, under the cited Plex policy, a viewer’s Plex Pass can satisfy the requirement for remote personal-video playback on affected apps. The viewer can instead use Remote Watch Pass, while a Plex Pass held by the server administrator covers users accessing that server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will either platform transcode every file?

No. Direct play is used when the client supports the source. Transcoding is triggered by incompatible formats, bitrate limits, subtitles, HDR conversion or other client constraints. Results depend on the specific file, client, server hardware and settings.

Is a NAS required?

No. Both can run on suitable computers or other supported hosts. A NAS or mini PC becomes useful when you need always-on storage, more capacity, multiple simultaneous streams or hardware suited to transcoding.

Which one is more private?

Jellyfin makes the stronger privacy-oriented claim: it says it has no tracking, phone-home or central servers collecting user data. Plex uses accounts for remote access and optional online features, including watched-state sync data described in its documentation. Your own network and host security still determine how private either deployment is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Jellyfin better than Plex?

Jellyfin favors free-software control and self-hosting; Plex favors a broad documented client ecosystem, account-based sharing and integrated streaming. The better choice depends on your devices, remote-use needs and maintenance preferences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I watch my Plex server remotely for free?

Local playback is free. Since April 29, 2025, affected apps require Plex Pass on the server admin or viewer account, or a viewer Remote Watch Pass, for remote personal-video playback.

Do I need a NAS or mini PC to run Jellyfin or Plex?

No. A suitable existing computer can host either. Dedicated hardware is worthwhile for always-on storage, larger libraries, multiple streams or demanding transcoding.
