Short answer: ErsatzTV and Tunarr are external channel-generation applications, not Jellyfin plugins in the usual sense. They turn a library into scheduled, channel-style streams and provide Jellyfin with M3U playlist and XMLTV guide feeds. Choose ErsatzTV when your channel design depends on broad local-media types or a straightforward M3U/XMLTV workflow. Choose Tunarr when you want a web interface for detailed channel, program, commercial and scheduling configuration, or you prefer its HDHomeRun-style client connection. Tunarr also introduces an FFmpeg dependency and documents an M3U program-boundary caveat.
Neither application is a replacement for an antenna or broadcast tuner. Jellyfin is simply consuming generated streams as Live TV channels.
What “pseudo-live TV” means in Jellyfin
Pseudo-live TV is scheduled playback from files you already own. An external application selects media, arranges it into a timetable, and exposes each timetable as a channel. Jellyfin then displays those channels alongside other Live TV sources, with guide data showing what is playing now and what is next.

This differs from receiving over-the-air or cable broadcasts. Jellyfin supports tuner types such as HDHomeRun and M3U, while guide providers can include Schedules Direct and XMLTV. A physical HDHomeRun device can receive broadcast television, but a library-generated channel from ErsatzTV or Tunarr does not require one. The relevant Jellyfin documentation is Jellyfin’s Live TV guide.

- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
The “plugin” wording can therefore be misleading. The documented integrations have each application publish a playlist and guide endpoint; Jellyfin is configured to consume those endpoints as a tuner and guide provider. Neither product’s official Jellyfin instructions establish that the channel generator itself is installed as a Jellyfin server plugin.
At a glance: ErsatzTV and Tunarr
| Decision point | ErsatzTV | Tunarr |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Build scheduled channels from media and expose M3U/XMLTV feeds. | Create channels from Plex or Jellyfin media with web-based channel, program, commercial and settings controls. |
| Jellyfin connection | Add its M3U URL as a Jellyfin M3U tuner, then add its XMLTV URL as a guide provider. | Supports M3U and HDHomeRun-style connections; its guide recommends selecting HDHomeRun, with XMLTV configured for guide data. |
| Media-source breadth | Media-server synchronization supports Movies and Shows. Local libraries also support music videos, other videos, songs, images and remote streams. | Documented as working with Plex/Jellyfin media; the cited setup pages do not provide an equivalent exhaustive list of local-media kinds. |
| Runtime dependency | The cited Jellyfin setup and media pages do not specify an FFmpeg minimum. | Requires FFmpeg for normalizing channel streams and other functions; 6.1 is the minimum known supported version and 7.1.1 is recommended. |
| Installation choices | Use the project’s supported deployment method for your platform. | Docker images include FFmpeg; standalone binaries require you to supply a suitable FFmpeg build. Dev builds may be unstable, and downgrading from a dev build is unsupported. |
| Documented caveat | No comparable performance or reliability benchmark is provided in the cited documentation. | Some users have reported instability at program boundaries with M3U in Jellyfin when Jellyfin is not transcoding or remuxing; the documentation presents this as a caveat, not a universal defect. |
The official project pages are ErsatzTV’s Jellyfin setup, ErsatzTV’s media support, Tunarr’s home page, and Tunarr’s Jellyfin setup guide.
How the two integrations work
ErsatzTV’s M3U and XMLTV path
ErsatzTV creates channels from media items, then publishes two feeds. The M3U feed describes the channel streams; the XMLTV feed supplies programme titles, times and guide metadata. In Jellyfin, you add the M3U endpoint as an M3U tuner and add the XMLTV endpoint as a TV guide provider. Jellyfin must then map the guide entries to the corresponding channels.

- Copy the M3U URL supplied by ErsatzTV.
- In Jellyfin, open the Live TV tuner configuration and add an M3U tuner using that URL.
- Copy ErsatzTV’s XMLTV URL and add it under Jellyfin’s TV guide providers.
- Map the guide channels to the tuner channels, save, and allow Jellyfin to refresh the guide.
This route is explicit and portable: the generator remains a separate service, while Jellyfin handles the tuner and guide presentation.
Tunarr’s M3U or HDHomeRun-style path
Tunarr’s web interface is built around channel construction. Its own description is: Create live TV channels from media on your Plex/Jellyfin servers, and more!
You configure channels, programmes, commercials and related settings in Tunarr, then expose those channels to Jellyfin.

- In Tunarr, connect the Jellyfin or Plex media source and define channels and their schedules.
- Open Tunarr’s Jellyfin client configuration and choose either the M3U connection or the HDHomeRun-style option.
- Tunarr recommends selecting the HDHomeRun-style connection in its guide; follow the generated endpoint details shown by your installation.
- In Jellyfin’s Live TV settings, add the Tunarr connection as the corresponding tuner type.
- Configure Tunarr’s XMLTV feed as Jellyfin’s guide provider, then map guide channels to the imported tuner channels.
The HDHomeRun-style option is a protocol choice for software integration. It does not mean that Tunarr has supplied broadcast hardware.
Which media libraries each tool can use
When ErsatzTV is the better fit
ErsatzTV is the more clearly documented choice when your channel concept includes more than films and episodic television. Its media-server synchronization supports Movies and Shows. Its local-library mode additionally supports music videos, other videos, songs, images and remote streams. That distinction matters if you want a music-video channel, a slideshow channel, a mixed personal-video channel or a schedule that uses remote streams.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before designing a channel, identify where the source files live. If the material is in a synchronized Jellyfin, Plex or Emby library, plan around the documented Movies-and-Shows scope. If you need the broader set of media kinds, the local-library route is the relevant ErsatzTV capability.
When Tunarr is the better fit
Tunarr’s documented focus is building channels from Plex or Jellyfin media and configuring the resulting programming in a web UI. That is attractive when the main requirement is editorial control over channel lineups, scheduled programmes and commercials rather than unusual file types. The cited Tunarr pages do not publish an exhaustive matrix of every supported media kind, so do not assume that a local image or song workflow is equivalent to ErsatzTV’s documented local-library support.
Guide data: why XMLTV setup matters
A playlist alone gives Jellyfin channel streams but not a useful programme guide. XMLTV adds channel identifiers, programme names, start times and end times. The identifiers in the guide must correspond to the channels imported from the M3U or HDHomeRun-style tuner. If they do not match, Jellyfin may show channels with empty or incorrect listings even though playback works.

Jellyfin’s supported guide formats and mapping process are described in its Live TV documentation.
Tunarr’s FFmpeg requirement and installation choices
Tunarr requires FFmpeg to normalize channel streams and perform other functions. Its setup documentation lists version 6.1 as the minimum known supported release and recommends 7.1.1. These are version requirements from Tunarr’s documentation, not a performance benchmark.
The deployment method changes who manages that dependency:
- Docker: Tunarr’s Docker images include FFmpeg, reducing the need to install and maintain a matching binary separately.
- Standalone binary: You must provide a suitable FFmpeg build and make it available to Tunarr according to the installation instructions.
- Development builds: Tunarr warns that dev builds may be unstable. Downgrading from a dev build to a previous version is unsupported, so use a stable release when predictable maintenance matters.
Check the current Tunarr setup documentation and installation documentation for platform-specific instructions and version changes before deploying.
The documented Tunarr M3U boundary caveat
Tunarr’s Jellyfin guide notes that some users have experienced stability problems when an M3U stream reaches a programme boundary, apparently when Jellyfin is not transcoding or remuxing the stream. Treat this as a documented warning rather than proof that every M3U installation will fail.

If you see a playback stop, a stalled transition or a channel that fails only when one programme changes to the next, check whether the issue coincides with a boundary. Compare the M3U connection with Tunarr’s recommended HDHomeRun-style connection, and review whether Jellyfin is passing the stream directly or transcoding/remuxing it. Changing those variables can identify whether the documented condition applies to your setup.
A practical selection framework
Choose ErsatzTV if these statements describe your project
- Your schedule needs local media types such as music videos, songs, images, other videos or remote streams.
- You prefer a clearly defined M3U tuner plus XMLTV guide workflow.
- Your Jellyfin, Plex or Emby source can be limited to the documented Movies and Shows categories.
- You want to keep the channel generator separate from Jellyfin and use standard feed interfaces.
Choose Tunarr if these statements describe your project
- You want a web UI centered on channels, programmes, commercials and scheduling settings.
- You are comfortable running FFmpeg 6.1 or newer, with 7.1.1 recommended by Tunarr.
- You prefer to try the HDHomeRun-style Jellyfin connection recommended in Tunarr’s guide.
- You can evaluate the M3U boundary behavior in your own playback path and switch connection modes if needed.
Use neither as a substitute for broadcast reception
If your requirement is live antenna or cable television, start with a compatible physical tuner and Jellyfin’s tuner documentation. ErsatzTV and Tunarr address scheduled playback from library media; they do not provide the broadcast signal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting the common failure points
Channels appear, but the guide is empty
Verify that the XMLTV provider was added separately from the tuner, refresh the guide, and map the XMLTV channel identifiers to the imported tuner channels. An M3U URL by itself does not create programme listings.
Jellyfin cannot import the feed
Confirm that the generator is running, the URL is reachable from the Jellyfin server, and the selected tuner type matches the feed. For ErsatzTV, the documented route is M3U. For Tunarr, check whether you selected M3U or the HDHomeRun-style option and configured Jellyfin accordingly.
Tunarr fails to start or streams do not normalize
Check the FFmpeg installation and version. Tunarr documents 6.1 as the minimum known supported version and recommends 7.1.1. Docker users should confirm they are using an image that includes FFmpeg; standalone users must verify the binary path and build.

Playback breaks at programme changes
On Tunarr, investigate the documented M3U boundary caveat. Test the HDHomeRun-style connection and review Jellyfin’s transcoding or remuxing behavior rather than assuming the media file itself is corrupt.
A channel contains the wrong kind of media
Review the source-library path. ErsatzTV’s synchronized media-server path is documented for Movies and Shows, while its local-library path covers additional kinds. Tunarr’s cited pages do not establish a matching exhaustive list, so confirm support for any unusual media type before building a schedule around it.
What the documentation does—and does not—prove
The official pages establish the feed interfaces, setup sequences, media-source statements and Tunarr’s FFmpeg and boundary notes. They do not provide controlled comparisons of speed, ease of use, reliability, resource consumption or channel-change latency. There is therefore no evidence-based basis for declaring one universally faster, simpler or more stable. The correct choice follows from your library types, preferred Jellyfin connection and willingness to manage runtime dependencies.
Bottom line
For a broad local-media mix and a direct M3U/XMLTV integration, start with ErsatzTV. For a channel-design workflow with programmes, commercials, settings and an HDHomeRun-style option, evaluate Tunarr, provided FFmpeg management is acceptable. In both cases, configure the generator as an external tuner-and-guide source in Jellyfin, not as an assumed plugin, and validate guide mapping and programme transitions with the media and connection type you actually plan to use.
