If by “true hardware ownership” you mean keeping control of the server and its user accounts, Jellyfin is the closer fit: its documentation describes a self-hosted system with local users and says login information and metadata are not sent to remote servers during login. That does not make it a universal winner. Plex supports personal-media streaming on a home network without a subscription, while its current plan page sets paid-account conditions for remote personal-video streaming. Your clients, media formats, and need for remote access may matter more than the software label.
The title suggests a month-long hands-on test, but no test setup or observed results are established here. This comparison therefore sticks to documented policies and technical guidance rather than presenting invented experience or claiming a benchmark-based verdict.
What “hardware ownership” means in a Plex vs. Jellyfin comparison
Owning the physical server is not the same as controlling every part of the software around it. For this comparison, the useful question is whether you can host the media server yourself and manage its accounts locally, and what conditions apply when you watch away from home.
Both products organize and stream a personal media library from a server to client devices. Jellyfin calls itself free software and an alternative to proprietary media systems; Plex describes its Media Server as a central organizer and streamer for personal media. The distinction is not that one product runs on hardware and the other does not. It is a difference in documented account model and remote-video policy.

Who controls the server and its accounts?
Jellyfin documents local user accounts
Jellyfin says users are entirely local and that login does not send information or metadata to remote servers. Its documentation also describes the system as fully self-hosted and independent from the Internet. That is a strong fit if you want to administer the server and its accounts on your own host. See the Jellyfin users documentation and networking documentation.
Local account management does not mean every user should have administrator powers. Jellyfin lets an administrator assign permissions, including whether an account may transcode audio or video, and whether it has management access. Grant elevated access only to people who need it.

Plex’s documented policy is different from a claim that it always needs the Internet
Plex’s current plans page says personal media can be streamed on devices connected to the local network without a subscription. That policy does not establish that every Plex feature works offline, nor does it mean every feature is paid. It also does not document a local-account model equivalent to Jellyfin’s statement about local users. Avoid turning this policy difference into a broader claim about Plex’s dependence on the Internet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat changes when you watch outside your home?
Plex distinguishes local playback from remote streaming of personal video. Its current plans page says remote video access is enabled either by an active Plex Pass on the server administrator’s account, for users accessing that server, or by a Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass on the viewer’s account. Remote Watch Pass provides remote streaming access without the wider Plex Pass feature set. Check the current Plex plans page for terms, which can change.

- Smart Home Surveillance - Support up to 30 IP cameras with AI detection, instant alerts and secure remote monitoring
The same page says the remote-streaming subscription condition for personal content applies to movies, TV, and other video, not music or photo streaming through the dedicated Plexamp and Plex Photos apps. Plex also lists hardware transcoding, downloads, and features such as Skip Intro and Credits among Plex Pass features. These are distinct plan benefits; they should not be confused with the local-network streaming policy.
Jellyfin’s self-hosted design gives you control over the server, but it does not automatically create a secure public remote-access setup. Its hardware guidance says to keep the server behind a properly configured firewall or another secure network environment. If remote access is important, treat networking and security as a separate setup decision rather than assuming self-hosting alone makes an exposed server safe.

How much server hardware do you need?
The main workload question is whether your client can play a file as it is or the server must convert it. Jellyfin describes four playback modes. Direct play sends the file without transcoding and adds almost no server load. Remux changes the container while leaving the audio and video streams untouched. Direct stream transcodes audio while leaving the original video untouched. Transcode converts video and is the more demanding case. The client reports its capabilities, and the server chooses output settings within its capabilities. See Jellyfin’s playback and transcoding documentation.

A client that supports the file’s codecs and bitrate may direct play it; a device or connection that cannot handle the source may require conversion. Consider your actual media formats, client devices, remote bitrate, resolution, and number of simultaneous streams before buying a GPU or replacing a working host.

Jellyfin’s hardware guidance is a starting point, not a benchmark
Jellyfin’s hardware-selection guide recommends, for an integrated-graphics server, CPUs including Intel Core i5-11400, Pentium Gold G7400, Intel N100, or Apple M-series or newer, with 8 GB RAM as a suggested baseline for that setup. It also recommends a 100 GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache, gigabit Ethernet or faster, and at least 20 Mbps upload for remote access. These are Jellyfin project recommendations, not independent performance tests or guarantees for a particular machine. Suitability depends on formats, client support, concurrent streams, settings, and platform. See the Jellyfin hardware-selection guide.
The guide names an Intel N100 as one possible integrated-graphics CPU, making an Intel N100 mini PC a plausible host category for a compact server. It does not test a particular mini PC or establish how a specific model will perform with Plex. An SSD for system files and cache, and a gigabit Ethernet connection, are useful categories to consider under Jellyfin’s guidance, not mandatory shopping-list items for everyone. Media-library storage capacity is a separate decision.
Jellyfin says modern GPUs from Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Apple, and Rockchip can support hardware-accelerated transcoding when the required hardware is available. If you expect video transcoding or HDR-to-SDR conversion, GPU capabilities can materially affect the workload; if your clients usually direct play, buying a GPU may add cost without solving a real problem. The cited hardware guide does not provide measured power consumption, so electricity use should not be inferred from its CPU recommendations.
Which one fits your priorities?
| Decision point | Jellyfin | Plex |
|---|---|---|
| Server and account control | Documentation describes a fully self-hosted system with local users; login information and metadata are not sent to remote servers during login. | The cited plans page establishes local-network streaming policy, but does not document an equivalent local-user model. |
| Personal video on the home network | Self-hosted media-server use. | Personal-media streaming on the local network is available without a subscription, according to the current plans page. |
| Remote personal-video streaming | Self-hosted networking must be configured securely; the cited pages do not establish a subscription condition. | Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass arrangements apply as described on the current plans page. |
| Hardware planning | Workload depends on playback mode; Jellyfin publishes general hardware recommendations, not an independent benchmark. | Hardware transcoding is listed as a Plex Pass feature; the cited plans page does not establish comparative performance. |
Choose Jellyfin if local account control and self-hosting are central to what you mean by owning the whole system, and you are prepared to configure and maintain it. Choose Plex if its documented local-network option meets your needs and its current remote-video account conditions are acceptable. Neither set of official documentation establishes that one is universally easier, more reliable, more polished, or more compatible.
What a real month-long verdict would need to establish
A meaningful hands-on claim should identify the server host and operating system, software versions, sample media formats, client devices, network conditions for local and remote playback, playback modes observed, and practical setup and maintenance experience. It should also define “hardware ownership” and judge the products against those specific criteria. Without those details, documentation supports a comparison of policies and setup considerations—not a claim that one product won a month-long test.
