The right Jellyfin alternative depends on what you mean by “personalized live TV.” If you want to watch and record local over-the-air (OTA) broadcasts or an IPTV feed, Plex and Emby are the closest media-server replacements. If you want to turn your own movie and TV library into scheduled, channel-like streams, keep Jellyfin and add a custom-channel layer such as ErsatzTV. A network tuner and antenna are still required for OTA reception, while guide data is required for browsing listings and scheduling recordings.

No single option is universally best. The official documentation establishes supported tuners, guide inputs, client connections and subscription requirements, but it does not establish comparative reliability, app quality or privacy performance.

First decide which kind of personalized live TV you want

“Live TV” describes two different projects. Choosing the wrong architecture can leave you paying for a DVR feature when you really wanted a personal channel guide, or configuring a media server when your actual need is simply to receive local broadcasts.

Broadcast or IPTV live TV

This is the traditional DVR job: a tuner receives OTA or cable channels, or an IPTV source supplies an M3U playlist; guide data supplies programme names and times; the server presents a live grid and records programmes. Jellyfin documents HDHomeRun and M3U tuners, with Schedules Direct and XMLTV guide sources. Jellyfin’s live-TV documentation describes the required tuner-and-guide arrangement.

Scheduled channels from your own media

This is closer to building a personal television network. A scheduler selects items from your library, places them into linear channels and exposes those channels through M3U and XMLTV feeds. ErsatzTV documents this model for clients including Jellyfin, Plex, TiviMate, Channels DVR Server and Kodi. The media server or player remains the viewing interface; ErsatzTV supplies the channel streams and listings.

Jellyfin’s built-in live-TV route

Jellyfin is not limited to on-demand library playback. Its Live Broadcast documentation describes watching and recording television through a supported tuner and programme-guide source.

Inputs Jellyfin documents

  • HDHomeRun: a network tuner that makes tuner streams available to the server.
  • M3U: a playlist-based input that can represent an IPTV service.
  • Schedules Direct: a paid guide service for US and Canadian data.
  • XMLTV: a guide-file format that can be supplied by a compatible provider or workflow.

Listings are not optional if you want a usable programme grid or scheduled recordings: the guide tells Jellyfin what each channel is showing and when. IPTV providers vary in playlist and XMLTV compatibility, so verify that the source supplies stable stream URLs and matching channel identifiers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Basic Jellyfin setup sequence

  1. Choose the source. For OTA reception, connect a region-compatible network tuner to an antenna. For IPTV, obtain an M3U playlist and a matching guide source.
  2. Make the tuner reachable. Put a network tuner on the same reachable network as the server and confirm that the server can discover or address it.
  3. Add the tuner in Jellyfin. In the server’s Live TV configuration, add the HDHomeRun device or M3U source and enter the source details requested by Jellyfin.
  4. Add guide data. Select Schedules Direct or XMLTV and map the guide channels to the tuner channels. Guide coverage and provider fees depend on country and provider.
  5. Check the guide before scheduling. Confirm that channel names, time zones and programme times align with the actual stream. Schedule recordings only after the lineup is correct.

Docker networking caveat for HDHomeRun

Jellyfin’s setup guide specifically calls out host networking for Docker deployments using HDHomeRun. The tuner connects through a changing UDP port, so a container network that does not expose the required traffic can prevent discovery or playback. Apply the documented networking approach for your deployment rather than assuming a default bridge configuration will work.

Plex as a Jellyfin replacement for OTA and DVR

Plex’s Live TV & DVR setup uses a wizard that detects or accepts a compatible tuner, scans channels and maps them to a guide lineup. For OTA, the tuner and antenna must be connected and positioned for the broadcasts you want to receive.

What Plex provides

  • Channel discovery: the setup wizard scans the tuner and lets you select the channels to include.
  • Guide mapping: channels are matched to a guide lineup so the grid contains programme names and times.
  • Live viewing: Plex’s FAQ distinguishes free OTA live viewing with a compatible tuner and antenna from paid DVR recording.
  • XMLTV fallback: Plex says XMLTV data can be supplied in unsupported countries when a compatible tuner is used.

The subscription boundary

Recording broadcasts is not included in the free live-viewing path. Plex states: “The ability to record broadcasts (e.g. DVR) is a premium feature and requires an active Plex Pass subscription.” The statement appears in Plex Support’s “Live TV & DVR (Set Up and Manage),” listed as last modified October 24, 2024: Plex Support.

Keep the tuner address stable

Plex advises keeping a network tuner’s address stable, for example with a static IP address or a DHCP reservation. This prevents a server configuration from pointing at an address that changes after a network restart. It is a network-maintenance step, not a substitute for checking tuner and broadcast-standard compatibility in your region.

Emby as a Jellyfin replacement

Emby’s Live TV documentation covers several input types: HDHomeRun network tuners, Hauppauge tuners on Windows, M3U sources and guide providers. It also documents channel mapping so a source channel can be associated with the correct listing.

  • Compatible with Android, FireTV, AppleTV, Roku, Sony, XBox, iPhone, iPad, Win10/11, Mac
  • 4 tuners (ATSC 1.0)

Guide coverage and formats

Emby says its built-in guide data covers the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. It also supports XMLTV, which can be useful where built-in coverage does not match your location or where you already have a compatible guide provider. Coverage, update frequency and fees are provider- and geography-dependent; confirm the current offer for your country before building the system around it. Details are in Emby’s guide-data documentation.

Subscription requirement

Emby states that Live TV and DVR require a valid Emby Premiere subscription. This applies to the core live-TV/DVR feature described in its setup documentation, so include that recurring cost when comparing Emby with a self-hosted Jellyfin configuration.

External TV backends

If you already use a dedicated PVR application, Emby documents plugins for systems including NextPVR and TVHeadEnd. The Live TV plugins documentation says the corresponding standalone application is required. In practice, this is a two-part deployment: the external backend handles the tuner or capture workflow, while Emby connects to it through the plugin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDHomeRun placement

Emby’s HDHomeRun setup guidance describes placing the network tuner near an antenna or cable drop. A network tuner does not improve a weak antenna signal by itself; reception, cabling and the local broadcast standard still determine which channels are available.

Build personal channels with ErsatzTV instead of replacing Jellyfin

For a library-based television experience, ErsatzTV is a complementary layer rather than a wholesale server replacement. Its client documentation says it can expose M3U and/or XMLTV URLs to supported clients. The documented client list includes Jellyfin, Plex, TiviMate, Channels DVR Server and Kodi.

How the custom-channel architecture works

  1. Keep your media library in the server you already use. ErsatzTV needs access to the movies, episodes or other media you want to schedule.
  2. Create channel schedules. Arrange collections or playlists into linear programming, such as a morning news-style block, a film channel or an episode rotation.
  3. Publish the feeds. ErsatzTV generates an M3U stream list and XMLTV guide URL for the channels.
  4. Add the feeds to a client. Configure the chosen client with the M3U URL for playback and the XMLTV URL for programme listings, following the client-specific page.
  5. Verify stream compatibility. Confirm that the client can open the generated streams and that guide channel identifiers match the M3U entries.

Jellyfin and Plex client notes

ErsatzTV provides a Jellyfin setup page and a Plex setup page. The Plex page states that Plex Pass is required for ErsatzTV to work with Plex. That requirement is separate from whether ErsatzTV can generate the feeds: it concerns the Plex client’s ability to use them. Client capabilities are not identical, so test the guide import, channel playback and recording behavior in the client you select.

What ErsatzTV does not replace

ErsatzTV does not receive OTA signals, provide an antenna or supply broadcast guide data for local stations. If you need local channels, add a tuner and guide source through Jellyfin, Plex or Emby. If you need scheduled personal-media channels, use the M3U/XMLTV workflow instead of buying broadcast hardware you do not need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hardware and reception requirements for OTA

An OTA system has two physical components: a compatible tuner and an antenna. A network tuner is convenient because the server can access it over the home network, but it still needs a suitable RF signal. HDHomeRun is the explicitly documented example in Jellyfin and Emby materials.

Choose for your region and source

  • Country and broadcast standard: tuner support is not universal. Check that the model handles the broadcast standard used where you live.
  • OTA versus cable: an antenna is appropriate for over-the-air broadcasts; cable systems may require different hardware or provider authorization.
  • Reception conditions: antenna location, indoor or outdoor placement, distance from transmitters and obstructions affect the channels the tuner can scan.
  • Network design: keep a network tuner reachable from the server and, for Plex, use a stable address such as a DHCP reservation.

Plex’s live-TV documentation requires a compatible tuner and antenna for OTA. Emby describes placing an HDHomeRun near an antenna or cable drop, while Jellyfin lists HDHomeRun as a supported tuner type. These documents establish compatibility paths, not a guarantee that every model works in every country.

Guide data, listings and recurring costs

Guide data is the layer that turns a stream list into a television guide. Without it, you may be able to open a stream but not browse reliable programme times or schedule recordings.

Platform or layer Documented guide options Geographic or subscription note
Jellyfin Schedules Direct and XMLTV Jellyfin identifies Schedules Direct as a paid service providing US and Canadian data.
Plex Included guide data for supported countries; XMLTV can be supplied in unsupported countries with a compatible tuner DVR recording requires Plex Pass.
Emby Built-in guide data and XMLTV Built-in coverage is stated for the United States, Canada and United Kingdom; Live TV/DVR requires Emby Premiere.
ErsatzTV XMLTV generated for its scheduled channels It supplies personal-channel listings; it is not an OTA guide provider.

Guide availability can change by country, provider and date. Before purchasing hardware or committing to a server, check whether the guide source covers your postal area, carries the channels you receive and permits the recording workflow you intend to use.

Which architecture fits your goal?

Choose Plex when

  • You want a replacement media server with a documented tuner-scan and channel-mapping wizard.
  • You are comfortable paying for Plex Pass to record broadcasts.
  • Your tuner and country are supported, or you can supply XMLTV where Plex documents that option.

Choose Emby when

  • You want documented support for HDHomeRun, M3U, Windows Hauppauge tuners or an external backend such as NextPVR or TVHeadEnd.
  • Your location fits Emby’s built-in guide coverage, or you can provide XMLTV.
  • Emby Premiere fits your budget for Live TV and DVR.

Keep Jellyfin when

  • You prefer its existing server and clients and only need to configure a tuner and guide source.
  • You want a documented HDHomeRun or M3U path without changing media-server platforms.
  • You are willing to handle guide-provider selection, channel mapping and network configuration yourself.

Add ErsatzTV when

  • Your goal is a “channel” experience built from movies and episodes you already own or manage.
  • You want scheduled rotations, themed channels or linear playback rather than live reception.
  • You want to keep Jellyfin and add M3U/XMLTV feeds instead of migrating the whole library.

Practical setup plans

Plan A: OTA channels with a Jellyfin alternative

  1. Confirm the local broadcast standard and choose a compatible tuner and antenna.
  2. Connect the antenna to the tuner, place the tuner on the network and reserve its address if the platform recommends it.
  3. Install Plex or Emby on the server and open its Live TV setup.
  4. Run the tuner scan and remove channels you cannot receive reliably.
  5. Select the correct guide lineup, or configure XMLTV where documented.
  6. Map channels, check time zones and wait for listings to populate.
  7. Test live playback on the devices you actually use before scheduling important recordings.
  8. For Plex, activate Plex Pass before relying on DVR recording. For Emby, activate Emby Premiere for Live TV/DVR.

Plan B: IPTV through Jellyfin, Plex or Emby

  1. Obtain an M3U playlist and determine whether the provider supplies XMLTV data.
  2. Check that the playlist URLs are reachable from the server and that the guide’s channel identifiers correspond to the playlist.
  3. Add the M3U source in the selected server’s Live TV configuration.
  4. Import or configure XMLTV and map channels.
  5. Test several channels at different times; a playlist that imports successfully can still contain unavailable or mismatched streams.
  6. Confirm the provider’s licensing and service terms for the channels you receive.

Plan C: Personal-media channels with ErsatzTV

  1. Ensure ErsatzTV can read the media folders or libraries you want to schedule.
  2. Design channels around a clear programming rule: a genre, franchise, decade, mood or episode order.
  3. Build schedules and verify that each item has usable metadata.
  4. Copy the generated M3U and XMLTV URLs from ErsatzTV.
  5. Add both feeds to the client-specific configuration for Jellyfin, Plex or another supported player.
  6. Check that the guide names match the channels and that streams start without transcoding or path errors.
  7. Adjust schedule length and rotation rules after observing a full programming cycle.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely check Corrective action
Network tuner is not discovered Network reachability or container networking Confirm the tuner and server can communicate. For Jellyfin in Docker, apply the host-networking approach described in its setup guide because HDHomeRun uses a changing UDP port.
Channels scan but the guide is empty Guide provider, lineup or channel mapping Verify that the guide covers your region, then map guide channels to the tuner or M3U entries.
Live playback works but recordings cannot be scheduled Missing listings or platform subscription Fix guide data first. Also check Plex Pass or Emby Premiere requirements for DVR recording.
IPTV channels appear under the wrong names Mismatched M3U and XMLTV identifiers Use matching channel IDs and remap entries in the server or guide configuration.
ErsatzTV channels import but do not play Client compatibility or stream URL access Test the generated M3U URL from the server’s network, then confirm the client supports the stream format and that the media paths are readable.
A tuner receives fewer channels than expected Antenna placement, cabling or regional standard Check reception conditions and hardware compatibility before changing server software.

What the documentation can—and cannot—tell you

The cited setup pages establish that Jellyfin, Plex and Emby support documented live-TV workflows, and that ErsatzTV can provide M3U/XMLTV feeds to several clients. They do not provide a controlled comparison of uptime, channel-change speed, transcoding efficiency, mobile-app quality, privacy or ease of use. Those outcomes depend on server hardware, network design, tuner model, guide provider, client device and region.

Subscription terms, supported tuner models, guide coverage and client integrations can change. Recheck the linked vendor documentation immediately before deployment, especially if your system depends on a particular country, broadcast standard or external guide service.

Bottom line

For local broadcasts and DVR, investigate Plex and Emby as direct Jellyfin alternatives, budgeting for Plex Pass or Emby Premiere where required. For a self-hosted setup you already like, configure Jellyfin with HDHomeRun or M3U and a compatible guide source. For channels made from your own library, add ErsatzTV and feed its M3U/XMLTV output into Jellyfin or another supported client. Start by identifying whether you need real broadcast reception or scheduled personal-media channels; that decision determines the hardware, guide data and subscription requirements.
