JBL says the original Boombox plays 3.5 dB louder than the JBL Xtreme, describing that difference as a “150% volume increase.” That comparison applies to those two models—not to every Boombox generation—and JBL does not explain the measurement method or how it calculated the percentage.
What JBL’s 3.5 dB comparison actually means
JBL’s support page states: “Yes, the Boombox plays at 3,5dB higher volume than the JBL Xtreme.” The comma is JBL’s decimal notation. The claim is specifically about the original Boombox and the JBL Xtreme; it is not a published comparison between the Boombox 3 or Boombox 4 and the Xtreme. JBL Support’s comparison does not specify test conditions, a measurement procedure, or what “150% volume increase” means.
Those qualifications matter because “volume” can refer to different things, and a decibel difference does not by itself establish a precise percentage increase in perceived loudness. Treat 3.5 dB and 150% as JBL’s stated comparison, not as a fully documented, independently verified test result.
Does the Boombox 4 have a published loudness advantage?
The available figures do not establish a directly comparable maximum-SPL advantage for the Boombox 4 over an earlier generation. HARMAN’s September 3, 2025 launch announcement says the Boombox 4 has 50% more power output on battery than its predecessor. That is a manufacturer claim about power output, not a finding that it is 50% louder or a measured decibel gain. HARMAN’s announcement also does not provide a matched maximum-SPL comparison in the cited statement.

TechRadar reports a maximum of 105 dB for the Boombox 4 and notes that the sound starts to hollow out near the highest levels. The review passage does not give enough measurement detail—such as test distance and conditions—to use that figure for a controlled comparison with another model. TechRadar’s review should therefore be read as a reviewer’s reported result, not as proof of a generation-to-generation gain.
Why the Boombox 4’s wattage does not answer how loud it gets
JBL’s specification sheet lists different RMS output ratings for AC and battery operation. These are manufacturer specifications, not matched sound-pressure measurements. JBL’s Boombox 4 spec sheet gives the following figures:

Power ratings alone cannot establish how many decibels louder one speaker is than another. To make that comparison, the models would need to be measured under the same conditions, including distance and power mode; it would also help to account for distortion or compression near maximum output. JBL describes the Boombox 4’s AI Sound Boost as analyzing music in real time and adjusting sound for more power with less distortion, but that feature description is not a substitute for a comparative SPL test. A useful model-to-model loudness comparison needs matched maximum-SPL measurements, ideally alongside distortion behavior and whether the speaker is plugged in or running on battery. RTINGS’ comparison page includes an SPL-at-maximum-volume field, but the numerical values are locked on the cited page, so it does not provide accessible figures for a comparison here.
