For everyday spending in the UAE, Jaywan is the domestic option; for overseas, travel and broader online use, choose a card that explicitly carries Visa or Mastercard (or another international network). The logo on the front is only part of the decision. Whether a card works abroad, what it costs and who can obtain it depend on the issuing bank or licensed financial institution and the exact mono-badge or co-badged product.

Jaywan issuance became a nationwide consumer option in July 2026. This guide explains what the scheme does, where it can be used, how co-badging changes its reach and how to compare the account terms behind the card.

The short answer: choose by where you pay

Jaywan is the UAE’s domestic payment-card scheme, operated by Al Etihad Payments (AEP), a subsidiary of the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE). It is not a different name for Visa or Mastercard. A card carrying only the Jaywan logo is designed for UAE and GCC use. A Jaywan card carrying a second network logo is co-badged: the Jaywan side supports domestic routing while the partner network provides the international route described in that product’s terms.

That distinction produces a practical rule:

  • Mostly UAE purchases and cash withdrawals: a Jaywan card can be suitable if the issuing account’s fees, eligibility and local acceptance meet your needs.
  • International travel, foreign websites or overseas subscriptions: look for explicit Visa, Mastercard, Discover or UnionPay co-badging on the actual card, then confirm foreign-use settings and charges with the issuer.
  • A specific website, app or subscription: ask the merchant and the bank whether that exact card is supported. Scheme-level e-commerce capability does not guarantee acceptance at every checkout.

No official, like-for-like schedule establishes that Jaywan cards are universally cheaper, safer or more widely accepted than Visa or Mastercard debit cards. Those outcomes depend on the bank, account and transaction route.

What Jaywan is—and what it is not

A UAE domestic scheme

AEP describes Jaywan as a national card scheme for payments in the UAE. Its stated channels include automated teller machines (ATMs), point-of-sale (POS) terminals and e-commerce. The scheme gives locally issued cards a domestic network identity rather than relying solely on an international network for UAE transactions.

CBUAE’s 2024 annual report describes Jaywan’s infrastructure as enabling payment-related data to be processed and stored within the UAE. That is a design and data-localization description. It is not a published ranking of fraud rates, privacy protection or card security, and it does not prove that every individual transaction has an identical processing path.

A card scheme, not a bank account

Jaywan does not set your salary-transfer requirement, minimum balance, overdraft policy, replacement charge or customer-service standard. A bank, licensed financial institution or exchange house issues the card and supplies the underlying account or prepaid product. Two cards with the same Jaywan branding can therefore have different eligibility rules, fees and controls.

Mono-badge and co-badged cards explained

Mono-badge Jaywan

A mono-badge card carries Jaywan as its relevant scheme and is described by AEP for local and GCC usage. It is the straightforward domestic choice, but “domestic” should not be read as “accepted at every terminal.” The merchant must support the scheme, the issuer must permit the transaction and normal card controls still apply.

Co-badged Jaywan

A co-badged card carries Jaywan plus an international network logo. AEP has announced partnerships involving Discover, Mastercard, Visa and UnionPay. Visa separately announced a Jaywan–Visa co-badging agreement, and Mastercard announced its Jaywan–Mastercard collaboration. These announcements establish partnership routes, not a promise that every issuer offers every combination.

When a transaction is made, the available route can depend on the merchant, terminal, country, currency, issuer settings and network-selection rules. Check the physical card, the digital-card image in your banking app and the issuer’s product sheet. Never infer international acceptance merely because a bank, network or scheme has announced a partnership.

Jaywan compared with Visa and Mastercard

Decision point Jaywan Visa or Mastercard branding What you must verify
Primary role UAE domestic card scheme operated by AEP International payment networks, used alone or alongside a domestic scheme Which logos appear on the exact card and which route the issuer enables
UAE spending Designed for local transactions through supported ATMs, POS terminals and e-commerce channels Also supports UAE payments wherever the merchant accepts the network Merchant acceptance, issuer restrictions and any local-use fees
Outside the UAE Mono-badge use is described for local and GCC transactions; international use is associated with co-badging International network route, subject to merchant acceptance and issuer controls Whether your Jaywan card is co-badged, destination coverage, travel controls and foreign fees
Online payments AEP lists e-commerce as a supported channel; acceptance remains merchant-specific Checkout support depends on the merchant, network and issuer authentication Test the exact website or ask both the merchant and issuer
Fees and benefits No common Jaywan-wide consumer fee or rewards schedule has been established Fees and rewards are set by the issuing bank and account Issuance, maintenance, replacement, ATM, foreign-exchange, international and rewards terms
Data infrastructure CBUAE’s 2024 annual report describes UAE processing and storage of payment-related data Network infrastructure may be international or domestic depending on the transaction Do not convert a localization statement into a claim of superior security or privacy

Where a Jaywan card can be used

ATMs and POS terminals in the UAE

Jaywan is intended for cash withdrawals and purchases at participating UAE ATMs and card terminals. CBUAE’s UAESWITCH description explains that the domestic ATM network interconnects banks, allowing customers to use other banks’ ATM and POS facilities interchangeably within the domestic infrastructure. That description explains the network’s purpose; it is not a guarantee that every terminal accepts every card.

Visa Virtual eGift Card
  • Visa Virtual eGift Cards are designed for online use only. Gift Cards are subject to Terms and Conditions: a.co/5bw3qXJ
  • When you access your Visa Virtual eGift Card for the first time, you’ll need to register your name, address, phone number, and email address via activationspot.com. These details should also be used as your billing address for online purchases, as many merchants require address verification for purchase authorization.
  • This Visa Virtual eGift Card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Visa Virtual eGift Cards are emailed active.
  • Funds do not expire but your Visa Virtual eGift Card has a ‘valid thru’ date (9 years from date of purchase). If funds remain after this date has passed, please call the Toll Free number found on your Visa Virtual eGift Card for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout.
  • This item is not eligible for refund, resale, or return. Available for sale within the United States only. Not available to residents of Puerto Rico, Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota, West Virginia and the US Virgin Islands.

At a terminal, look for the Jaywan mark or ask the merchant before attempting a high-value transaction. A declined payment can result from a merchant’s acquiring setup, an issuer block, an offline-terminal limitation, a daily limit or insufficient funds—not necessarily from a problem with the scheme itself.

GCC use

AEP’s description of mono-badge Jaywan cards refers to local and GCC use. “GCC use” is not a blanket promise for every country, merchant category, ATM or currency. Before travelling, ask the issuer whether your card is enabled for the destination, whether a co-badged route is required and what exchange-rate and cash-withdrawal charges apply.

E-commerce

AEP’s official scheme announcement of 27 February 2025 said, “Jaywan cards will be accepted in all payment channels including ATMs, Point of Sale terminals and e-commerce transactions.” This is the scheme operator’s description of supported channels, not a guarantee that every online store has enabled Jaywan.

There is at least one named integration: in an announcement dated 9 September 2026, Mastercard said Jaywan transactions were enabled through noon payments’ digital-payments ecosystem using Mastercard Gateway. That confirms a specific online acceptance path. It does not establish universal support across UAE websites, international checkouts or recurring-billing systems.

Can you use Jaywan outside the UAE?

The safe answer is: only when the particular card and transaction route support it. A mono-badge Jaywan card should not be assumed to work worldwide. A co-badged Jaywan–Visa, Jaywan–Mastercard or other partner card is intended to add an international route, but the issuer’s product terms still control activation, countries, merchant categories, cash access, contactless use and online authentication.

Questions to ask before travel

  1. Does the physical or digital card show an international-network logo in addition to Jaywan?
  2. Is international usage switched on in the banking app or by customer service?
  3. What foreign-currency markup, cross-border fee and dynamic-currency-conversion policy applies?
  4. Are overseas ATM withdrawals allowed, and what are the issuer and local-ATM charges?
  5. Will the issuer send one-time passwords or approve 3-D Secure challenges while you are abroad?
  6. Are travel notifications, geographic limits or daily limits required?

If the issuer cannot answer these questions clearly, carry a separately issued international card as a backup rather than relying on a domestic-only card.

Online acceptance: how to verify a website before paying

Do not use the phrase “Jaywan works online” as a universal test. E-commerce support exists at the scheme level, but each merchant chooses its gateway, supported brands, authentication flow and recurring-payment rules.

  3. Ask the issuer whether the card supports online, international and recurring transactions.
  4. Confirm that your phone number, 3-D Secure authentication and spending limits are active.
  5. If a small authorization fails, record the exact error and ask the merchant whether the rejection came from its gateway or the issuer.

A one-time purchase and a subscription are different tests. A merchant may accept a card for an immediate authorization but reject it for recurring billing, pre-authorization deposits or a foreign-currency charge.

Availability in 2026

On 20 July 2026, AEP announced the nationwide commencement of Jaywan card issuance through banks, licensed financial institutions and exchange houses, making the scheme available to consumers. First-wave examples include:

  • First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB): announced a Jaywan debit-card launch on 20 July 2026.
  • Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB): announced a Jaywan launch on 27 July 2026.

These dated announcements demonstrate availability, not a complete issuer list. They also do not make the eligibility rules, charges or co-badging identical across institutions. Check the current application page and the card’s key-facts or tariff document before opening an account.

Costs, eligibility and benefits: the issuer sets the deal

Official scheme and partnership announcements do not provide a uniform Jaywan fee schedule that can be fairly compared with every Visa or Mastercard debit product. Do not choose a network because someone claims it is automatically cheaper. Compare the complete account relationship.

Term to compare Why it changes the real cost Where to verify it
Eligibility Residency, age, identification, salary transfer, minimum balance or prepaid requirements may exclude an otherwise suitable card Issuer eligibility page and account agreement
Card issuance and replacement Initial, replacement, lost-card and expedited-delivery charges can differ Current tariff or schedule of charges
Account maintenance Monthly fees or balance shortfalls can outweigh a low-cost card transaction Account fee sheet, including waiver conditions
ATM use Other-bank, overseas and balance-inquiry fees may apply separately Issuer ATM tariff and destination-bank notice
Foreign exchange Network conversion, issuer markup and dynamic currency conversion can produce different totals Foreign-transaction section and exchange-rate disclosure
International transactions Some products block cross-border, online or recurring payments unless enabled Card controls and issuer terms
Rewards and benefits Cashback, points, insurance or airport benefits are product features, not network guarantees Benefit terms, exclusions and expiry rules
Limits and service Daily purchase, ATM and online limits affect practical usability; support quality matters when a card is declined Product sheet, app controls and customer-service policy

Which card should you choose? A decision framework

If almost all spending is inside the UAE

Start with a Jaywan product if the issuing account offers the balance, salary and service conditions you want. Verify local ATM and POS acceptance in the places you actually visit, then compare maintenance, replacement and cash-withdrawal charges. A domestic scheme can meet the need without paying for international features you will not use, but only the issuer’s tariff can establish that it is economical for you.

If you travel or buy from foreign websites

Prioritize an explicitly co-badged Jaywan card or a separate Visa or Mastercard debit card with documented international support. Check destination coverage, foreign-exchange markup, overseas ATM charges, online authentication and card-freeze controls. If travel is occasional, retaining a domestic Jaywan card for UAE spending and an international card for travel can reduce the risk of being stranded after a country or merchant rejects the domestic route.

If you need one card for both jobs

Look for a co-badged product and confirm how route selection works. Ask whether the issuer supplies one account with dual-network acceptance or two cards, whether either route can be disabled independently and whether international transactions are enabled by default. Compare the resulting fees with the cost of keeping two cards; the network logo alone does not answer that question.

If your priority is online subscriptions

Use the merchant’s supported-brand list as the deciding evidence. Confirm recurring payments, tokenized card storage, 3-D Secure and foreign-currency billing with the issuer. A card that succeeds at a local one-time checkout may still fail when a subscription renews or when the merchant’s payment processor is outside the UAE.

A practical pre-application checklist

  • Photograph or note every logo on the physical and digital card.
  • Obtain the current account and card tariff, not just a promotional summary.
  • Check residency, identity, age, salary and minimum-balance conditions.
  • Ask for domestic ATM, POS and online acceptance details.
  • For travel, obtain written confirmation of countries, foreign fees and ATM limits.
  • Check whether international, online and recurring payments can be toggled in the app.
  • Confirm replacement time, emergency support and dispute procedures.
  • Test a low-value online transaction before using the card for a booking or subscription.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Mistake: assuming every Jaywan card is international

Fix: inspect the card for co-badging and read the issuer’s terms. AEP’s partnerships do not mean every institution issues every international variant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: treating a partnership announcement as merchant acceptance

Fix: verify the exact merchant, gateway and card route. The noon payments integration announced in September 2026 is a named example, not a universal acceptance list.

Mistake: comparing logos instead of total account cost

Fix: compare maintenance, balance requirements, ATM charges, replacement fees, foreign-exchange markup and rewards for the exact products.

Mistake: interpreting a decline as proof the scheme is unsupported

Fix: check funds, limits, card status, merchant configuration, online authentication and geographic controls. Ask the issuer for the decline reason and the merchant which network it attempted.

Mistake: treating data localization as a security guarantee

Fix: regard UAE processing and storage as an infrastructure characteristic described by CBUAE. Evaluate fraud controls, alerts, dispute handling and account security separately.

What the available figures do—and do not—show

Al Etihad Payments reported that the UnionPay network reaches more than 180 countries in its 2026 announcement about a Jaywan–UnionPay prepaid card. That is a coverage statement for the UnionPay network in that specific announcement; it is not a guarantee that every Jaywan card has UnionPay acceptance or that every merchant in those countries will accept a particular card.

No directly comparable official statistic establishes Jaywan versus Visa or Mastercard debit-card fees, acceptance rates or fraud outcomes. A precise claim that one network is cheapest, safest or accepted more often would therefore go beyond the published evidence.

Bottom line for UAE card shoppers

Jaywan is the UAE’s domestic scheme and became broadly available to consumers in July 2026. It is a sensible candidate for local spending when the issuing account suits you. Visa and Mastercard remain the relevant international routes when you need travel, foreign websites or broad cross-border acceptance. A co-badged Jaywan card can combine those functions, but only the logos and terms on the specific product prove that it does.

Choose the account first, then verify the network route, merchant acceptance and fees for your actual use. If you need both domestic convenience and reliable international access, keeping a Jaywan-focused card and a separately confirmed international card may be more dependable than assuming one logo covers every situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every Jaywan card work outside the UAE?

No. A mono-badge Jaywan card is described for local and GCC use. International use is associated with co-badged cards, so check the exact card’s second network logo and the issuer’s foreign-use terms.

Is Jaywan accepted online?

AEP lists e-commerce as a supported channel, but each merchant must enable the scheme. Mastercard’s September 2026 announcement confirms a specific Jaywan route through noon payments’ ecosystem; it does not prove universal website acceptance.

Who issues Jaywan cards?

Banks, licensed financial institutions and exchange houses issue the consumer products. AEP operates the scheme, while each issuer sets eligibility, fees, limits and benefits.

Are Jaywan cards cheaper than Visa or Mastercard cards?

There is no common official fee schedule proving that. Compare the issuer’s account, card, ATM, foreign-exchange and international-transaction charges for the exact products.
