Jaywan is not a single bank card. It is the UAE’s domestic card-payment scheme, and participating banks, licensed financial institutions and exchange houses issue their own Jaywan debit or prepaid products. For most UAE residents, the practical alternative is an issuer-issued debit, prepaid or credit card on an international network such as Visa or Mastercard—provided its acceptance, fees, foreign-exchange terms and eligibility fit the way you pay.

Choose by looking at the network mark on the actual card and the issuer’s current key-facts document. A mono-badge Jaywan card is intended mainly for UAE and, depending on the product, GCC use; a co-badged card may add international acceptance. Do not assume every Jaywan card works abroad or that every card carrying the Jaywan mark has the same benefits.

What Jaywan is—and what it is not

Al Etihad Payments (AEP), a subsidiary of the Central Bank of the UAE, operates Jaywan as the UAE’s national domestic card-payment scheme. Jaywan sits below the individual product: a bank or another participating institution issues the physical or virtual card, links it to an account or loaded balance, and sets the customer-facing terms.

Nationwide issuance began on 20 July 2026 through banks, licensed financial institutions and exchange houses. Institutions are rolling products out in phases, so a card mentioned in an announcement may not yet be available to every resident or through every application channel.

Visa Physical Gift Card $200 (plus $6.95 Purchase Fee)
  • Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
  • This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
  • To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.

That distinction explains why there is no universal “best Jaywan card.” Two cards can use the same domestic scheme while differing in account requirements, ATM access, limits, digital-wallet support, foreign use and charges.

Jaywan card types

  • Debit: spending is taken from a linked bank account. The issuer controls account eligibility, balance requirements, transaction limits and overdraft rules.
  • Prepaid: you load a defined amount before spending. This can provide tighter budgeting, but reload, withdrawal and inactivity rules depend on the issuer.
  • Credit: AEP initially described credit cards as a later phase after debit and prepaid, subject to demand. AEP and Mastercard subsequently announced a Jaywan–Mastercard credit-card partnership, but the reviewed announcements do not establish a complete list of credit cards currently open for applications or their terms.

Why a UAE resident might want an alternative

A domestic scheme can be a sensible everyday option for UAE purchases, yet residents often need a second card for travel, foreign websites, overseas subscriptions, wider ATM access or a different rewards structure. The key question is not simply “Jaywan or not?” It is whether the exact card supports the transaction you need at a cost you accept.

Local spending

A mono-badge Jaywan card is designed for domestic use and, according to AEP’s scheme description, may also be usable in the GCC. Confirm the issuer’s wording before relying on it for a particular country, merchant category or online service.

International spending

Co-badged Jaywan cards pair the domestic mark with an international payment network. The second mark is the important evidence for overseas acceptance. AEP lists international scheme partnerships, and an August 2026 memorandum with UnionPay International was reported as intended to enable global acceptance of mono-badged Jaywan cards. That announcement is not proof that every cardholder already has identical acceptance; the issuer’s product page and the marks printed on your card control your practical use.

Separate account or spending control

An international-network debit card may be preferable if you already maintain an account with that bank. A prepaid alternative can be useful when you want to cap exposure, give a controlled amount to another person or keep travel spending separate from your main balance. Neither format is automatically cheaper: compare loading, cash withdrawal, conversion and replacement charges.

The alternatives available in practice

The sources do not establish a verified, current, like-for-like ranking of named non-Jaywan debit or prepaid cards in the UAE. Rather than inventing a shortlist, use the categories below to identify a genuine alternative and then verify the current official terms.

Option Best fit What to verify
International-network debit card Residents who need overseas merchant, online and ATM acceptance while spending from a bank account Exact network, countries and channels accepted, foreign-exchange method, foreign transaction fee, ATM fee, account and salary requirements
International-network prepaid card Budgeting, controlled allowances or travel spending separated from a current account Reload channels, maximum balance, expiry or inactivity rules, cash access, conversion rate, replacement cost and identity checks
Co-badged Jaywan debit card One card for UAE payments with an additional international network Which international network is printed on the card, whether it is enabled for online and overseas use, and the issuer’s cross-border fees
Mono-badge Jaywan debit card Primarily UAE transactions and any supported GCC use Domestic merchant and ATM coverage, online authentication, wallet support and any current international acceptance arrangement
Jaywan prepaid card Set-amount spending without linking every purchase to a current-account balance Who can obtain it, where it can be loaded, transaction limits, withdrawals, refunds and card replacement terms
Credit card on an international network or a Jaywan–Mastercard product Residents who need a credit line, statement cycle or credit-card benefits Whether applications are actually open, annual and late-payment charges, interest or profit terms, cash-advance cost, eligibility and rewards conditions

Issuer announcements you can use as starting points

These are examples of availability announced by issuers, not a ranking or guarantee that a product is open to every UAE resident.

Issuer and product Use described by the issuer Eligibility or application detail stated What remains to check
First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) Jaywan debit card Local merchants, UAE-based online payments and UAE ATM cash withdrawals Eligible FAB account holders can apply through FAB Mobile or a branch. Non-customers need to open an eligible account. Fees, limits, rewards, wallet availability, replacement terms and any international-network capability were not stated in the announcement.
Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) Jaywan debit card Jaywan debit product for DIB customers Announced for existing DIB current and savings account holders. Current application status, account conditions, domestic limits, international acceptance and all charges require confirmation from DIB.
United Arab Bank (UAB) Jaywan prepaid card A UAE cashless-payment prepaid product UAB announced issuance in October 2025. Reload method, maximum balance, fees, ATM access, expiry and present availability were not established.

The absence of a fee or benefit in those announcements does not mean the fee is zero or the benefit is unavailable. It means you need the issuer’s current schedule of charges and key-facts document before applying.

How to compare Jaywan with another card

1. Start with the transaction map

List where you will use the card during a normal month: UAE shops, UAE government or utility portals, local e-commerce, international websites, subscriptions, travel merchants, foreign ATMs and peer-to-peer transfers. A card that covers local point-of-sale purchases may still fail on a foreign online merchant or an offline terminal abroad.

2. Read the network marks

Inspect the physical or digital card for the Jaywan mark and any co-badged international network. Ask the issuer whether the international mark is active for card-not-present purchases, recurring payments, contactless transactions, cash withdrawals and countries you visit. Do not infer acceptance solely from a press release about the scheme.

Visa Virtual eGift Card
  • Visa Virtual eGift Cards are designed for online use only. Gift Cards are subject to Terms and Conditions: a.co/5bw3qXJ
  • When you access your Visa Virtual eGift Card for the first time, you’ll need to register your name, address, phone number, and email address via activationspot.com. These details should also be used as your billing address for online purchases, as many merchants require address verification for purchase authorization.

  • This item is not eligible for refund, resale, or return. Available for sale within the United States only. Not available to residents of Puerto Rico, Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota, West Virginia and the US Virgin Islands.

3. Match the funding model to your risk tolerance

  • Use debit when you want direct access to an existing account and do not need a separate loaded balance.
  • Use prepaid when a fixed balance is more important than account convenience. Confirm how quickly you can reload and whether unused funds can be refunded.
  • Consider credit only after checking that the specific product is available and understanding its repayment, late-payment and cash-advance terms.

4. Confirm eligibility before moving money

Check whether the issuer requires UAE residency, an Emirates ID, a current or savings account, a minimum balance, a salary transfer, age criteria or an in-person identity check. The reviewed announcements do not establish one universal eligibility rule for all residents or all Jaywan cards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Compare the complete cost, not one headline fee

Cost area Questions to ask the issuer
Issuance and annual fee Is there a one-time issuance charge, recurring annual fee or minimum-balance waiver? Does a replacement card cost extra?
Domestic cash Which UAE ATMs are in-network, and what does the issuer charge for a withdrawal or balance inquiry?
Foreign cash What fee applies to an overseas ATM, and can the ATM operator add its own surcharge?
Foreign exchange Is conversion based on the network rate, the issuer’s rate or a marked-up rate? Is a separate foreign-transaction percentage added?
Prepaid loading Are there charges for bank transfer, cash reload, card-to-card transfer or exceeding a load limit?
Disputes and replacement How do you report an unauthorised transaction, and what happens if the card is lost while travelling?

No current, comparable fee schedule for competing cards was established in the available announcements. Treat every amount shown in an application screen or key-facts document as product- and date-specific.

6. Check convenience and controls

Verify Apple Pay or Google Wallet support if you rely on a phone, whether contactless can be disabled, how purchase and ATM limits are changed, and whether instant push notifications are available. AEP describes scheme-level security and convenience features, but the issuer determines how those functions appear in its app and what controls you can use.

Choosing by common UAE resident scenarios

You mainly pay inside the UAE

A mono-badge Jaywan debit card can be a reasonable primary card if its issuer’s merchants, online channels and ATM network cover your routine. Compare it with an international-network debit card only if the latter offers a materially better account relationship, fee structure or rewards package.

You travel or pay foreign subscriptions

Choose a card with a clearly identified international network or a co-badged Jaywan variant whose issuer explicitly confirms overseas and online use. Before departure, test a small online transaction, enable travel notifications if available and save a second card from a different account or network.

You want a hard spending cap

Consider prepaid. Load only the amount needed, then check how refunds, partial reversals and recurring subscriptions work. A prepaid card can be declined when a merchant places a temporary authorisation larger than the final bill, so keep a buffer for hotels, car rentals and similar deposits.

You already bank with FAB or DIB

Ask the bank whether your account qualifies for its announced Jaywan debit product and request the current key-facts document. Existing-account eligibility may make application easier, but it does not establish that the card has the international acceptance or pricing you need.

You need a card for someone who should not access your main account

A prepaid product may provide clearer limits than a debit card linked to a current account. Confirm whether the issuer allows supplementary users, how identity verification works and who is liable for disputed transactions.

Merchant acceptance and the Emirates example

Acceptance is a moving operational detail. Emirates announced Jaywan acceptance for UAE customer bookings beginning 16 September 2026. The announcement described a promotion for bookings through 31 August 2027 and travel through 29 February 2028, while noting that online special-fare availability was still coming soon. Those dates and channel restrictions make the example useful as a reminder, not as a permanent feature of every Jaywan card.

When a merchant advertises Jaywan, confirm whether the offer applies to web, app, call-centre or airport transactions; whether it is limited to UAE-issued cards; and whether the card must be mono-badge or co-badged. Recheck the merchant’s current terms immediately before paying because acceptance and promotions can change.

Application and verification checklist

  1. Identify the exact issuer and product name, rather than applying for “Jaywan” generically.
  2. Confirm that applications are open in your emirate and through the advertised channel.
  3. Prepare the identity, residency and account documents listed by that issuer.
  4. Download the current key-facts statement and schedule of charges.
  5. Check the card’s network marks and ask specifically about overseas, online, ATM and wallet use.
  6. Confirm transaction, contactless, ATM, daily and monthly limits.
  7. Ask how to freeze the card, dispute a transaction and obtain an emergency replacement.
  8. After activation, make a small UAE purchase and, if relevant, a low-value online or international test before depending on the card for travel.

Pitfalls that lead to the wrong choice

Assuming every Jaywan card is globally accepted

International reach depends on the card variant and issuer. A co-badge, a stated network partnership and the issuer’s terms matter more than the Jaywan name alone.

Treating an announcement as a live application

Rollouts are phased. A launch statement can describe a planned or limited release; verify the application button, eligible customer segment and issuance timeline with the institution.

Comparing only annual fees

Foreign exchange, overseas ATM charges, reload fees and replacement costs can outweigh a waived annual fee for a frequent traveller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring online and recurring-payment rules

Ask whether subscriptions, tokenised wallet payments, 3-D Secure authentication and merchant pre-authorisations are supported. A card that works at a UAE terminal may still be unsuitable for a recurring international service.

Relying on an old promotion

Time-limited merchant offers have booking, travel and channel cut-offs. Verify the current terms on the merchant and issuer pages before assuming a discount applies.

A practical decision rule

Choose the Jaywan product when your priority is UAE domestic spending, the issuer’s account terms suit you and the card’s limits and controls are adequate. Choose an international-network alternative when overseas or cross-border online acceptance is essential and the network mark, fees and foreign-exchange treatment are documented. Choose a co-badged Jaywan card when one product can satisfy both needs and the issuer confirms that both rails are active for your transactions. Keep a second card when a declined transaction would disrupt travel, accommodation or essential services.

The strongest comparison is therefore card-by-card: issuer, funding type, network, acceptance, eligibility, total cost, controls and current availability. Scheme branding alone cannot answer those questions.
