Japan’s Nikkei 225 climbed above 70,000 during the first half of trading on Monday, October 5, 2026, reaching 70,037.61 at midday, up 2.53%. It later closed at 69,946.4, up 2.4%—below 70,000, but its highest close since July 1, according to Reuters reporting. The distinction matters: the index crossed the threshold intraday, not at the close.
What happened to the Nikkei on October 5?
The Nikkei’s midday level of 70,037.61 was its highest since early July at that point in the session. By the close it had eased to 69,946.4. Reuters described that close as a three-month high and the highest since July 1. Both readings were strong gains, but they refer to different moments in the trading day.
| Index | Midday, October 5 | Close, October 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Nikkei 225 | 70,037.61, up 2.53% | 69,946.4, up 2.4% |
| TOPIX | 4,138.57, up 1.16% | 4,145.22, up 1.33% |
The figures are reported by Reuters on October 5, 2026, in midday and closing coverage republished by Business Recorder; Qatar News Agency also repeated selected closing figures. Why did the Nikkei rise?
Reuters-linked coverage attributed the advance mainly to buying in AI-related shares, following gains on Wall Street late the previous week. US stocks had risen Friday after weaker-than-expected jobs data reduced expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike at its October policy meeting. That was reported market context, not proof that one factor alone caused Japan’s rally.

Mamoru Shimode, chief strategist at Resona Asset Management, said investors had bought AI-related shares, but sentiment was more muted than earlier in the year, when the Nikkei reached a record high. He added that the AI rally could continue while investors became more selective.
Which stocks led the advance?
Semiconductor-related shares
Advantest and Tokyo Electron were identified in Reuters reports as the largest contributors to the Nikkei’s gain. Their share-price moves varied between the midday and closing updates:

Shimode attributed its comparatively limited rise to a mix of buying and investors who were holding losses selling into the rally. Reuters closing report, via Business Recorder.
Financial shares and market breadth
Bank shares also gained by the close: Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group rose 2.0% and Mizuho Financial Group rose 2.63%, according to Reuters closing coverage. The report’s rounded breakdown of more than 1,500 stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market showed 55% rising, 40% falling and 3% unchanged. Those published rounded percentages total 98%, so they should not be read as an exact accounting of every stock.

What the session does—and does not—show
The October 5 move showed strong demand for selected AI-linked shares, alongside gains in banks and a positive close for the broader TOPIX. Shimode’s comments point to a more selective market mood than during the earlier record-setting period. One day’s index and share-price moves, however, do not establish what will happen in later sessions or provide a basis on their own for an investment decision.
