Japan’s government increased its cyber-vigilance warnings on Oct. 9, 2026, after a series of reported data leaks, including an attack affecting information from about 6.6 million Times Car member accounts. That figure describes accounts in one incident—not a verified count of unique people affected nationwide—and there is no consolidated official tally for the broader wave.
What Japan’s October cyber warning says
The Associated Press reported that Japan’s National Cybersecurity Office sent instructions to ministries on Oct. 9, 2026, for distribution to local public bodies and private companies. The measures described included keeping security protections current, using strong passwords, and tightening cybersecurity across supply chains. The warning is a call for increased vigilance; it does not establish that every recent leak resulted from the same kind of attack.
Japan’s Minister for Digital Transformation, Toshiharu Furukawa, told reporters, “The attacks are getting increasingly sophisticated.” He also urged people to take responsibility for protecting their information: “Everyone must become vigilant about protecting your own information yourself.” Associated Press, Oct. 9, 2026

How many accounts were involved—and what the figures do and don’t mean
Times Car: about 6.6 million member accounts
The AP reported that the cyberattack on car-sharing service Times Car exposed information from about 6.6 million member accounts. An account count is not necessarily a count of distinct people, and it is specific to that incident. AP described the broader reported leaks as involving information such as passport and driver’s-license details, contact information, and credit-card data; those categories should not be assumed to apply to every company or incident.

More than 500 reported cases so far in 2026
AP also relayed a study released that week by the Yomiuri newspaper and Trend Micro, which put cases above 500 in 2026 so far, compared with 473 in the previous year and 503 in 2024. These are figures attributed by AP to that study, not an official government count. They do not tell readers how many unique people or records were affected across Japan.
The sources do not establish a complete consolidated count of companies, incidents, people, or records affected in the recent wave, nor do they establish one shared technical method behind the corporate incidents.

Japan’s Information-technology Promotion Agency (IPA) said organizations that hold large amounts of information or sensitive data should recognize cyber risk as a significant management issue and advance countermeasures under leadership. The government warning points to practical areas for review: update security protections, require strong passwords, and address security across supply chains. Respond promptly when personal information may have leaked
The Personal Information Protection Commission posted an alert on Oct. 7, 2026, concerning responses to large-scale leakage incidents. A separate government-services incident is not the customer breach wave
A Sep. 11, 2026, Digital Agency notice described possible leakage of files containing personal information about staff of agencies using Government Solution Services (GSS) and people involved in their work. The agency said personal data about general members of the public were not included. This is a distinct government-services incident, not evidence that public-service users were affected by the Times Car or other customer-account incidents. - Follow direct notices from a company whose service you use; the reported account total alone does not identify which individuals were affected.
- If a service says your information was exposed, follow its instructions and be alert to unexpected messages or requests that use personal details to appear legitimate.
- Use strong, unique passwords for accounts and change a password if the affected organization advises you to do so or if you reused it elsewhere.
- Do not assume that every reported incident involved payment-card data or identity documents; the information involved varies by case.
