The closest official match is Sony’s Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition, but it is not a Midnight Black console and it did not launch on November 19. Sony announced the Japanese-language-only model on November 12, 2025, for release in Japan on November 21, 2025, at a suggested retail price of ¥55,000 (tax included). Sony’s announcement describes a digital console with an 825 GB SSD and strict Japan-account requirements.
Which PS5 model did Sony announce?
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Japanese-language-only model on November 12, 2025. Its Japan release date was November 21, 2025—not November 19—and Sony’s announcement did not identify the console as Midnight Black. The announced suggested retail price was ¥55,000, tax included. These are Sony’s announced Japan-market details, not a statement of current retailer stock or pricing.
The model’s intended market is explicit: Sony says it is limited to use in Japan and works only with a PlayStation account set to Japanese for console language and Japan for country/region. That makes the account restriction—not the exterior color—the key distinction for prospective buyers.
Can you use the Japan-only PS5 outside Japan?
Sony’s stated requirements are a console language of Japanese and an account country/region of Japan. A buyer whose PlayStation account is registered to another country or region should not assume that changing the console’s menus to Japanese will make the model suitable: Sony specifies both conditions. The announcement does not establish that this model can be used with accounts from other regions.

Sony’s official Japanese wording says: 「本モデルは、日本国内での使用に限定したPS5の新モデルです。本体言語を『日本語』、かつ『国/地域』を『日本』に設定しているPlayStationのアカウントでのみ利用可能となります。」 In English: “This model is a new PS5 model limited to use in Japan. It can only be used with a PlayStation account set to Japanese for the console language and Japan for country/region.” This is an editorial translation of Sony’s Japanese announcement, not a published English quotation.
What does the console include?
Digital games and storage
The console is sold without a disc drive and has an 825 GB SSD. Sony says it supports downloads of PS5 games and supported PS4 games obtained from the Japanese PlayStation Store. The 825 GB figure is the stated SSD capacity; it should not be read as a promise that all of that capacity is available for game installations.

Adding a disc drive
Sony says a separately purchased compatible disc drive can be attached to play packaged games. A later Sony campaign announcement also describes playing packaged video with the drive. Pairing the drive to the console requires an internet connection. Before buying a drive, confirm compatibility for this specific console and verify the current product listing; the announcements do not establish an exact compatible SKU.

Sony states that the vertical stand is sold separately. Confirm the compatible stand model before purchasing one; the cited announcement does not establish an exact accessory listing.

Is Midnight Black a PS5 console or a cover?
The official Midnight Black announcement cited here is about a cover for the CFI-2000 model group (the slim PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition), not a Japan-only Midnight Black console. Sony announced a tax-included suggested retail price of ¥7,480 for that cover in 2024. That price is for the cover, not for the Japan-only console. Sony’s Midnight Black cover announcement identifies the compatible model group.
So the supplied title appears to combine separate details: a Japanese-language-only digital console, a November 21, 2025 release, and a Midnight Black cover announcement. Sony’s cited official announcements do not establish a single product matching all of those details.

Warranty campaign for qualifying purchases
As of October 13, 2026, Sony’s September 14, 2026 announcement describes a campaign under which qualifying PS5 purchases can receive a second year of manufacturer warranty, extending the stated coverage from one year to two total years. The campaign period runs through March 31, 2027, at 23:59, and an application is required. Eligibility and terms matter; check Sony’s official warranty information and the campaign conditions before purchasing. The cited announcement does not establish that every console or purchase qualifies.
