Short answer: a normal PS5 does not play PlayStation 2 discs. A jailbroken PS5 can run the unofficial PS5SX2 homebrew emulator, but that route requires a compatible jailbreak, helper software, a BIOS dumped from your own PS2, and your own game files. An original PS2 is the simpler route for playing PS2 discs and using original accessories, provided you have working hardware and the right video connection.
PS5SX2 compatibility is still changing. The project describes ongoing work toward full library compatibility, while a Tom’s Hardware report dated October 10, 2026 says the software can read physical PS2 DVDs but not PS2 games released on CDs. Those are community-software capabilities, not Sony-supported PS5 features.
What the two options actually are
Official PS5 support stops short of PS2 discs
Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide, model CFI-7021, lists supported physical disc types and states: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” That is the documented behavior of an unmodified PS5. Sony’s separate backward-compatibility information concerns PS4 games that run on PS5; it does not add native PS2 disc support.

PS5SX2 is described by its project documentation as PCSX2, the PS2 emulator, running natively on a jailbroken PS5. The project is independent and says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Sony Interactive Entertainment or the PCSX2 team. Installing it therefore changes the question from “Does a PS5 support PS2?” to “Can this particular jailbroken PS5 run the current build and the game I want?”

Answers to the questions people ask first
Can a jailbroken PS5 play PS2 games?
It can provide an unofficial emulation route through PS5SX2, but “can” does not mean every title will work. You need a supported jailbreak, the helper and mount components, a PS2 BIOS from your own console, and a compatible game image or supported physical DVD. The emulator’s project is still working toward broad library compatibility, so check the current status of each game rather than treating the PS5 as a guaranteed PS2 replacement.
Does a regular PS5 play PS2 discs?
No. Sony’s documented disc support explicitly excludes PlayStation, PS2 and PS3 format software. A homebrew emulator running after a jailbreak is a separate, unofficial software path and does not change what Sony officially supports.
Which PS2 games work on PS5SX2?
No complete, independently verified title list or universal working percentage is established here. Compatibility can vary with the emulator build, game revision, region, image format and settings. Consult the current PS5SX2 release notes, issue reports and title-specific reports for the exact game you own.

Is using an original PS2 easier?
For disc-based play, usually yes: the basic requirements are a functioning PS2, a compatible controller, a suitable video connection and the game disc. You avoid jailbreak maintenance, BIOS placement, image management and per-title emulator troubleshooting. The trade-off is finding healthy aging hardware and accessories.
Quick comparison
| Decision point | Original PS2 | Jailbroken PS5 with PS5SX2 |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility confidence | Native PS2 hardware and software path | Varies by emulator build and individual game; full-library work is ongoing |
| Initial requirements | Working PS2, compatible controller, suitable display cable | Jailbroken PS5, kstuff helper payload, ShadowMountPlus, user-dumped BIOS and user-provided games |
| Game media | Original PS2 game media | ISO, CHD, CSO or ZSO files; a dated report also describes DVD reading, but not CD-game reading |
| Video and controls | Depends on the PS2 model, cable and television inputs | Configurable controls and display options; reported scaling and filters are not guarantees for every title |
| Ongoing maintenance | Aging console, discs, controllers and model-specific accessories | Changing jailbreak support, emulator updates, file management and per-game troubleshooting |
| Best fit | Disc ownership, original behavior and predictable booting | Experimentation, one-box convenience and adjustable rendering |
Compatibility: what you can reasonably expect
Original hardware has the clearest software path
A functioning PS2 is designed to run PS2 software from its native media. That makes it the more predictable choice when your priority is inserting a particular disc and using the console’s original controller behavior. Reliability still depends on the condition of the used console, optical drive, controller, memory card and cables; “native” does not mean every second-hand unit is healthy.
PS5SX2 does not have a universal compatibility guarantee
The PS5SX2 project says updates are planned as development continues “toward full compatibility across the PS2 library.” That wording describes a goal, not a completed compatibility result. The available project material does not provide a complete, independently verified title-by-title matrix or a defensible percentage for working games. Treat compatibility as a per-title question and check the current project documentation, issue reports and release notes for the exact game.

DVD and CD support are different
A Tom’s Hardware report published October 10, 2026 describes PS5SX2 support for physical PS2 game DVDs, including discs from different regions according to that report. It also says PS2 games released on CDs cannot be read. This is a reported feature of the homebrew software, not a change to Sony’s official PS5 disc support. If the game you own is on a CD, plan on using a supported image file rather than assuming the console can read the disc.
How to judge a compatibility report
Look for the exact game name, region, revision and emulator version. A report that only says a title “boots” may not mean that it reaches gameplay, saves correctly, renders every scene or responds reliably to all controls. Note whether the report used an ISO, CHD, CSO, ZSO or physical DVD, because the media path can matter. Keep a simple record of the version and settings that worked so an update does not erase your known-good configuration.
What you need for an original PS2
Console and accessories
Start with a PS2 model that powers on, produces video and can read the type of game media you intend to use. You also need a PS2-compatible controller. Sony’s accessory table shows that controller and video-cable compatibility varies between PS2 model families, so identify the SCPH model printed on the console before buying replacement accessories.
Budget for the complete setup rather than the console alone: a controller, power lead, video cable and, where relevant, a memory card are practical parts of a usable system. Their condition is more important than a listing that merely says the console turns on. Ask whether the optical drive, controller ports and video output were actually checked.
Television connection
Sony’s SCPH-90002CB/90003CB manual documents component-video configuration. When using component output, the console’s setting must match the television’s input; the documented choices include Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr and RGB. Check which inputs your television actually has, then choose a cable and console setting that correspond to those inputs. A cable cannot compensate for a television input that does not exist.

- Identify the model. Read the SCPH number on the console and use it to check accessory compatibility.
- Inspect the essential hardware. Confirm that the power lead, controller, video cable and disc drive are present and functional.
- Match the display connection. Use the television input available to you. For component video, configure the PS2 output mode to match the television’s Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr or RGB setting as described in the relevant manual.
- Connect the controller before launching a game. This avoids mistaking an unresponsive controller for a software fault.
- Insert the PS2 game disc and boot the console. If the drive struggles with multiple known-good discs, the issue is likely hardware condition rather than game compatibility.
- Resolve model-specific accessory problems first. A mismatched cable or controller can prevent a usable setup even when the console itself works.
- Test the complete chain. Check the picture, sound, controller buttons and memory-card access before assuming the console is ready for a long play session.
What you need for PS5SX2
A jailbreak-compatible PS5
The emulator requires a jailbroken PS5. Jailbreak compatibility depends on the console’s firmware and the state of the relevant homebrew tools, so do not treat an old firmware list or tutorial as permanently current. Check the live PS5SX2 instructions and the jailbreak documentation immediately before changing a console.

Helper and mount software
The project lists its helper payload, loaded with kstuff, and ShadowMountPlus for mounting the application. These are prerequisites in the project’s documented workflow, not optional performance tweaks.
Your own BIOS and games
PS5SX2 does not bundle a PS2 BIOS or game library. Its instructions require a BIOS dumped from the user’s own PS2 and user-provided games. The documentation lists ISO, CHD, CSO and ZSO image formats. Keep the source media and files organized so that you can identify the exact region and revision when troubleshooting a title.
Storage and file locations
The project documents USB storage locations and directories under /data/PCSX2/ on the console. Follow the directory names and capitalization in the current README rather than copying paths from an older guide. Whether you need a USB device depends on your existing storage and the file-placement method you choose.
Storage is a workflow choice, not a guaranteed purchase requirement. A reader with adequate console storage may use the documented internal path, while another may prefer USB for transferring and organizing several images. Confirm the current supported filesystem, folder structure and mount behavior before buying hardware solely for this purpose.
PS5SX2 setup, step by step
- Check current prerequisites. Verify that your PS5 firmware and jailbreak method are supported by the current project instructions. If the documentation has changed, use the newer procedure rather than combining steps from different releases.
- Prepare the jailbreak environment. Load the required helper payload with
kstuffaccording to the current jailbreak documentation. - Install or stage ShadowMountPlus. The project uses it to mount the PS5SX2 application. Confirm that the mount completes before trying to launch the emulator.
- Dump a BIOS from your own PS2. Transfer the resulting BIOS to the location specified by the current PS5SX2 instructions. The emulator will not supply this file for you.
- Prepare your game files. Use a supported
ISO,CHD,CSOorZSOimage, or use a physical DVD if the current build and your disc meet the reported DVD-support conditions. Do not assume a CD game will work from the optical drive. - Copy files to the documented location. The project describes USB paths and console directories beneath
/data/PCSX2/. Preserve the expected folder structure and avoid ambiguous filenames when you have multiple regions or revisions. - Launch and configure controls. Map a PS2-compatible controller and select display options inside the emulator. Save the configuration only after confirming that every required button is recognized.
- Test one title at a time. Record whether the game boots, reaches gameplay, displays correctly and responds to input. A successful launch of one title does not establish compatibility for the rest of the library.
- Recheck after updates. PS5SX2 is active homebrew software. An update can add support, change a setting or introduce a regression, so retain a known-good configuration and read the release notes before upgrading.
Image quality, controls and convenience
PS5SX2’s project documentation describes configurable controls and display options. The October 10, 2026 report additionally describes high-resolution scaling and filters. These features can make an emulator more convenient on a modern television, but an option being present does not prove that every game scales cleanly or that performance is consistent. Expect to adjust settings per title when a game shows glitches, incorrect aspect ratio or unstable rendering.
The original PS2 offers the opposite trade-off: fewer software settings, but a straightforward relationship between the console, its controller and its native game media. Image quality is governed by the PS2 model, cable, television processing and game output rather than emulator enhancements.

Convenience also has two meanings. The PS5 route can consolidate newer and older games around one television and offers software configuration, but starting a game may involve activating the jailbreak, mounting the application and locating an image. The PS2 requires fewer software steps once connected, though changing cables, discs or television inputs can be less convenient in a modern setup.

Maintenance and failure points
Original PS2 maintenance
- Disc-reading problems: test more than one known-good game before blaming a title; an aging optical drive can fail selectively.
- No picture: verify the television input and the cable type, then check that the PS2 output mode matches the display connection.
- Missing or incompatible controller: confirm that the accessory is supported by your exact SCPH model family.
- Intermittent operation: inspect the console, cable plugs and power connection; used hardware condition varies considerably.
- Accessory uncertainty: do not assume a cable or controller listed for one SCPH family is automatically suitable for another.
PS5SX2 maintenance
- Application will not mount: revisit the helper-payload and ShadowMountPlus sequence, then confirm that the jailbreak is still active.
- BIOS not found: check that the BIOS was dumped from your own PS2 and placed in the current documented directory.
- Game does not appear: verify the supported file extension, USB path or
/data/PCSX2/location and the spelling of the folder. - Game boots but fails in play: treat it as a title-specific compatibility issue; test another supported image or consult the project’s current issue information before changing multiple settings at once.
- Physical disc fails: determine whether it is a DVD or CD game. The dated report describes DVD support but not CD-game support.
- An update breaks a working title: keep the previous working setup available and review the project’s release notes before updating again.
- Firmware changes: avoid installing a system update or following a random tutorial until you have confirmed that the jailbreak and emulator remain supported.
Which route fits which priority?
Choose an original PS2 when
- You want the highest-confidence path for your existing PS2 discs.
- You prefer a console that does not require a jailbreak, helper payload or emulator file management.
- You already have compatible controllers and a television connection that suits the PS2 model.
- You value original hardware behavior more than resolution scaling and software filters.
- You want to troubleshoot physical hardware rather than maintain a changing software stack.
Choose PS5SX2 when
- You already have a PS5 that can be jailbroken by a currently supported method.
- You are comfortable maintaining homebrew software and checking changing instructions.
- You want configurable controls, display options or the possibility of higher-resolution rendering.
- You are prepared to verify each game rather than assuming the whole PS2 catalog works.
- You prefer managing supported image files and are willing to investigate title-specific issues.
Use both when your library and priorities differ
An original PS2 can remain the dependable disc machine while PS5SX2 serves games that are available as supported images or benefit from emulator display options. That is a practical division of roles, not evidence that either route is universally superior. It also gives you a fallback when a particular title is unstable in the emulator or when an aging PS2 drive has trouble with a disc.
Media, BIOS and ownership boundaries
The PS5SX2 documentation places responsibility for the BIOS and game files on the user and says they are not included. Use files obtained from your own hardware and games, and check the law where you live before dumping, copying or modifying software. Rules differ by jurisdiction; the available technical documentation does not establish a universal legal answer.
Keep original discs and the console used to create a BIOS or image identifiable. That makes it easier to distinguish a bad dump or incompatible revision from an emulator problem. Do not assume that downloading a file because it uses a familiar extension makes it appropriate, accurate or authorized.
Bottom line for the 2026 choice
If you want to play PS2 discs with the fewest moving parts, use a working original PS2 with model-matched accessories and a compatible display connection. If you want to experiment with PS2 emulation on a PS5, PS5SX2 is a real but unofficial route: it needs a jailbreak, helper and mount tooling, your own BIOS, your own game files and patience with changing compatibility. Its reported DVD support and enhancement features are useful, but they do not turn a jailbroken PS5 into an officially supported, universally compatible PS2 player.
