A jailbroken PS5 running a local language model can crash or slow down at several different stages: the exploit and loader, application permissions, model allocation, CPU scheduling, Vulkan, rest-mode resume, or the console’s cooling system. Find the failing stage first, record a reproducible configuration, then change one variable at a time. Do not start by switching models or firmware.
Start with the failure stage
The same symptom can have unrelated causes. A model that never reaches generation may be blocked by HEN rights or executable-memory permissions, while a model that generates for several minutes and then shuts down may be exhausting memory, starving system services, losing the Vulkan device, or triggering a power fault. Use the first visible failure to choose the next test.
| Where it fails | Typical symptom | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Exploit or HEN | The payload does not run, the title is not jailbroken, or the app cannot reach /data. |
Confirm the exploit host, HEN state, title-ID allowlist, and whether an ELF loader is listening on the expected port. |
| Application launch | The AI program closes immediately or never creates its server. | Check the app build, payload permissions, JIT or executable-memory rights, and the application log. |
| Model allocation | Loading stops, the process exits, the home screen freezes, or the model reports an allocation failure. | Check model size, quantization, context length, KV cache, buffers, and available process memory. |
| Generation | The model loads but token rate is low, unstable, or declines during a long prompt. | Compare the same model and context, then inspect thread count, polling, backend, prompt length, and temperature or fan behavior. |
| GPU or Vulkan | Generation hangs, the process reports a device loss, or the screen becomes unresponsive during GPU work. | Capture the Vulkan log, test CPU-only execution, and change one GPU setting at a time. |
| Rest-mode resume or Linux boot | A freeze or black screen occurs only after sleep, reboot, or a Linux-loader path. | Test a cold boot, remove incompatible payloads, and check display mode, HDCP, and the monitor or capture device. |
| Power or cooling | The fan becomes unusually loud, performance falls after sustained load, or the console powers off. | Improve clearance, clean the vents safely, reduce load, and use Sony’s repair diagnostics if shutdowns persist. |
Record a baseline before changing the setup
Write down one complete configuration and reproduce the problem twice if possible. A single token-rate reading is not useful if the model, context, backend, or thermal state changes between runs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- PS5 model and chassis, such as the original model, Slim, or Pro.
- System firmware version, exploit host, HEN version, and every payload or loader involved.
- AI application name and build, model name, quantization, context length, prompt length, and any GPU offload setting.
- Backend (CPU, Vulkan, or another GPU path), worker-thread count, and whether busy polling is enabled.
- Whether the failure occurs on cold boot, after rest mode, after several minutes of generation, or only with a particular display attached.
- Fan behavior, console position, surrounding clearance, and whether the vents have been cleaned recently.
- The exact error text, time of failure, and the server or application log.
Do not rely on an HTTP 500 response as the diagnosis. Runtime guidance for local AI servers notes that the useful error is normally in the server log. Save that log before restarting, because a reboot can erase the only evidence of an allocation failure, permission error, or device loss.

Separate jailbreak and loader failures from AI failures
When /data is unreachable
If the application cannot read its files under /data, the model is not yet the problem. PS5CEMU-HAR diagnostics distinguish a state where HEN is reported as “no” but /data is reachable from a genuinely missing loader. Add the title ID to the HEN app-jailbreak allowlist, or start an ELF loader on port 9021 when that is the path your setup requires. Recheck file access before changing the model.
When code runs only through an interpreter
Interpreter-only execution can make a program appear extremely slow or fail during native model initialization. It indicates a rights problem rather than a benchmark result. Grant the JIT or executable-memory permission required by the application, then repeat the same load test. Do not compare token speeds from an interpreter-only run with a native run.
Check compatibility before altering firmware
Record the exact firmware, HEN, payload, and application versions first. A change that fixes one loader can break another. Keep a known-working payload set and test a single compatibility change at a time; otherwise a new crash cannot be attributed to the firmware, HEN, loader, or AI application.

Model size is only one part of memory use. The runtime also needs the context and KV cache, temporary tensors, tokenizer or prompt buffers, executable code, and the application itself. A model that fits in a file may still exceed the largest contiguous allocation available to the payload.

What the documented Slim measurements mean
On a PS5 Slim CFI-2015 running firmware 13.60, PS5LM measured 8.00 GiB of flexible memory, an approximately 6.25 GiB malloc ceiling, and a largest single allocation of 6.00 GiB. Holding about 6 GiB froze the home screen. These are measurements from that console and firmware, not a universal limit for every PS5 model or system version.
| Measurement | Documented value | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible memory | 8.00 GiB | The total pool observed in the PS5LM test setup; it is not all available to one model process. |
| Malloc ceiling | About 6.25 GiB | A rough process-allocation ceiling in that setup, subject to fragmentation and other allocations. |
| Largest single allocation | 6.00 GiB | Do not treat this as a safe model target; reserving that much froze the home screen in the test. |
| Practical payload planning | Roughly 4–5 GiB for model, context, and buffers | PS5LM’s recommendation for a payload, not a guarantee across models or firmware. |
Reduce the allocation in a controlled order
- Close competing payloads and applications, then cold-boot the console so stale allocations are gone.
- Use a smaller model or a more compact quantization. Keep the model name and quantization in your test notes.
- Lower the context length. A shorter context reduces KV-cache memory, especially when the runtime keeps a large conversation history.
- Reduce batch, prompt-processing, and temporary-buffer settings if the runtime exposes them.
- Retry with the same prompt and backend while watching the log for the first allocation that fails.
- If the required model still exceeds the payload’s contiguous-memory envelope, use a native application with direct memory access rather than repeatedly forcing the payload to reserve more.
A crash exactly at model load points toward the memory envelope. A crash only after long generation can instead indicate cumulative buffers, CPU starvation, thermal behavior, or a GPU failure; keep those cases separate.
Stop CPU starvation from causing shutdowns
PS5LM measured 16 logical CPUs but only a subset available to its payload. In its tests, llama.cpp’s default busy polling across all five allowed CPUs starved system services; the console shut down twice. This is a scheduling failure, not evidence that the model is intrinsically too large.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use a conservative thread and polling configuration
- Disable busy polling or polling modes that spin continuously while waiting for work.
- Set worker threads below the full set available to the payload. Leave headroom for the shell, storage, networking, logging, and other system services.
- Run a short generation test and watch for UI lag, audio dropouts, fan escalation, or delayed system responses.
- Increase the worker count one step at a time only if the console remains responsive and the log stays clean.
- Keep the stable setting even if a higher count produces a slightly better short benchmark; a shutdown makes the configuration unusable.
The safe patch reported by PS5LM reduces thread count and disables polling. There is no single correct thread number for every model, firmware, or payload, so record the count with each token-rate result.

Interpret token speeds without drawing the wrong conclusion
Throughput is configuration-specific. PS5LM reported about 30 tokens per second decoding Qwen3.5 9B Q4_0, whose file size in that test was 6.37 GiB, and 25–29 tokens per second for Mistral 7B Q4_0. Both measurements used a 4,096-token context on the named test setup. They are reference points, not a guaranteed speed for every PS5.
| Reference run | Reported decode rate | Conditions that must match for a fair comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Qwen3.5 9B Q4_0 | About 30 tok/s | PS5LM test setup, 6.37 GiB model file, 4,096-token context, and the same backend and thermal state. |
| Mistral 7B Q4_0 | 25–29 tok/s | PS5LM test setup and 4,096-token context; exact prompt, backend, and system load still matter. |
Make a like-for-like speed test
- Use the same model file and quantization; changing from Q4_0 to another quantization changes both memory and compute.
- Keep context length, prompt length, batch settings, and sampling configuration constant.
- Use the same CPU or Vulkan backend and the same worker-thread and polling settings.
- Close the same background payloads and keep the console at the same thermal state.
- Measure several generated segments rather than the first few tokens, which can include prompt processing and startup overhead.
A lower result alone does not identify the cause. A speed drop that appears only as the console heats suggests thermal or power management; a drop that follows a thread increase suggests contention; a drop isolated to Vulkan suggests the GPU path; a drop only with long prompts suggests context or memory pressure.
Diagnose the Vulkan and GPU path
The PS5 Vulkan path used in the PS5LM research reports Vulkan 1.4 claims, 16-bit storage, timeline semaphores, subgroup operations, and a 4 GiB maximum storage buffer. It also reports no cooperative matrix or accelerated integer dot-product support. Those capabilities can affect which kernels run efficiently, so a model optimized for a different GPU may not scale as expected.

- Repeat the workload with the same model and context but CPU-only execution, if the application supports it.
- If CPU-only generation is stable, return to Vulkan with fewer GPU layers, a smaller context, or a smaller model, changing only one setting.
- Check whether the failure occurs at model upload, prompt processing, or long generation; each stage stresses different buffers.
- Keep the stable backend rather than combining an experimental Vulkan setting with a new HEN or firmware version.
Do not describe a Vulkan device loss as proof that the console is overheating. Capture the log and compare a controlled CPU run before making that connection.
Reduce thermal throttling and fan noise safely
Sony notes that “During some games and applications, you may find that your PS5™ console’s cooling fan operates louder than usual.” Sustained local inference can keep the CPU or GPU busy for longer than a short game menu, so fan noise by itself is not a diagnostic threshold.
Apply Sony’s airflow guidance
- Leave at least 10 cm of free space around the console.
- Keep the side and rear vents unobstructed.
- Avoid long-fiber carpet and cramped cabinets that restrict intake or exhaust.
- Prevent dust buildup around the vents.
Clean without adding a new risk
- Shut down the PS5 completely, not merely into rest mode.
- Disconnect the AC power cable from the rear before cleaning. Sony specifies this as a safety requirement.
- Use a low-powered vacuum cleaner to remove dust from and around the air vents.
- Reconnect power, boot normally, and repeat the same short inference test.
Cleaning is a dust-removal procedure, not a reason to disassemble the cooling system. The available guidance does not establish one model-wide temperature threshold for thermal throttling, so do not invent a universal cutoff or assume that a cooling stand, custom fan curve, or liquid-metal replacement is required. If airflow is clear and the console still throttles or powers off, move to hardware diagnostics rather than escalating modifications.
Handle rest-mode, Linux-loader, and black-screen failures
A configuration that works after a cold boot can fail after rest mode because payload state, memory mappings, or display negotiation changed. Test these paths independently.

Linux boot or resume freezes
ps5-linux-loader documentation identifies etaHEN/kstuff incompatibility as a likely cause for some Linux boot or rest-mode freezes and recommends disabling those components for that path. Do not apply that advice blindly to every AI payload: record which path is failing, disable one conflicting component, and test a cold boot and a resume separately.
Black screen after loading
Try the display mode, HDCP state, monitor or capture device, and a 1080p fallback. A black screen can be a display-negotiation problem even when the payload and model are healthy. Test with a direct connection to a known-compatible display before changing model or memory settings.
Use a cold boot as a control
- Power down fully and disconnect accessories that are not needed for the test.
- Boot, activate the same exploit and HEN sequence, and launch the AI application without entering rest mode.
- Run the smallest model that previously reproduced the issue.
- Only after a stable cold-boot run, test rest-mode resume with the same configuration.
Use a one-change-at-a-time recovery plan
Changing firmware, HEN, model, quantization, context, thread count, and backend together destroys the diagnostic signal. Follow this order so each result answers a specific question.
- Preserve evidence. Copy the application, server, loader, and Vulkan logs and write down the exact failure time.
- Reproduce cold. Restart fully, use the known-good exploit sequence, and run the smallest confirmed model.
- Verify rights. Confirm HEN status,
/dataaccess, title allowlisting or the port-9021loader, and JIT or executable-memory permission. - Lower memory. Reduce model size or quantization, context, and temporary buffers until allocation succeeds.
- Lower CPU pressure. Disable busy polling and reduce worker threads below the payload’s maximum.
- Isolate the backend. Compare CPU-only and Vulkan runs with every other setting unchanged.
- Control the environment. Improve 10-cm clearance, remove dust with the unplugged-console procedure, and repeat the same workload.
- Test resume and display separately. Only after the cold-boot path is stable should you test rest mode, Linux loading, HDCP, or alternate displays.
- Escalate persistent power symptoms. If shutdowns or freezes continue after these checks, stop changing software and use Sony’s repair diagnostic.
Match the fix to the symptom
| Symptom | Most useful next test | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
App cannot see /data |
Verify title allowlist or start the required ELF loader; inspect HEN status. | Failure here is a rights or loader issue, not a model-size issue. |
| Native initialization fails immediately | Grant JIT or executable memory and check the application log. | Interpreter-only execution or missing rights can prevent normal startup. |
| Model load freezes the shell | Use a smaller model, shorter context, and fewer competing payloads. | The requested contiguous allocation may exceed the process envelope. |
| Console shuts down under generation | Disable busy polling and reduce worker threads, then repeat cold. | CPU starvation is a plausible cause, especially if the UI also becomes unresponsive. |
Vulkan reports VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST |
Save the log and compare CPU-only execution. | The GPU or driver path failed; do not infer overheating without thermal evidence. |
| Fan becomes loud after sustained work | Check clearance and clean unplugged vents with a low-powered vacuum. | Airflow or dust may be raising heat; fan noise alone is not a universal throttle threshold. |
| Black screen after loader or resume | Cold boot, test another display path, HDCP state, display mode, or 1080p. | The failure may be display negotiation or rest-mode compatibility. |
| Power loss continues after all software checks | Use Sony’s repair diagnostic. | Persistent power, crash, or freeze symptoms require hardware/support escalation. |
Know when to stop troubleshooting software
Sony’s power guidance covers a console that loses power shortly after startup, will not turn on, crashes or freezes during play, or turns off while running. If those symptoms remain after restoring airflow, reducing payload memory, disabling CPU busy polling, and testing a known-good cold-boot configuration, treat the PS5 as a repair case. Repeated forced shutdowns can corrupt data and make later software diagnosis harder.
Before contacting support or a repair service, keep the model and firmware details, the exact sequence that triggers the failure, the logs, and the result of the airflow and cold-boot tests. That evidence distinguishes a reproducible payload problem from a console-level power or cooling fault.
Quick Recap
A compact operating checklist
- Identify the first failing stage: exploit, launch, allocation, generation, Vulkan, resume, display, or power.
- Save logs before rebooting and record the complete configuration.
- Confirm
/dataaccess, HEN allowlisting or loader status, and native-memory rights. - Plan approximately 4–5 GiB for model, context, and buffers only as a PS5LM payload guideline; do not generalize its Slim measurements.
- Disable busy polling and leave CPU headroom for system services.
- Compare token speeds only with matching model, quantization, context, prompt, backend, threads, and thermal state.
- For Vulkan device loss, capture the log and compare a CPU-only run.
- Keep at least 10 cm of clearance, unobstructed vents, and a clean, unplugged console.
- Test cold boot before rest mode, Linux-loader, or display changes.
- Escalate continuing shutdowns, freezes, or power loss to Sony’s repair diagnostics.
