“Mihawk OS” is being described as a future expansion of the PS5 Proton homebrew project, with a Windows 11-style interface and Windows game support as goals—not as a released operating system. The publicly documented project available today is prospero-win, a separate experimental compatibility runtime that already runs a limited selection of Windows games on homebrew-enabled PS5 consoles.
What Mihawk OS is—and what it is not
Current reporting presents PS5 Proton as a demonstration project that is developing toward an environment called Mihawk OS. The stated direction includes running both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows games through Proton, with a Linux compatibility layer planned for a later stage. No public release date has been established, and only a small number of games have reportedly been tested.
That makes Mihawk OS a development direction rather than a generally available Windows operating system for the PS5. It is not a Microsoft product, and the available evidence does not establish a downloadable public build, final hardware requirements, broad game compatibility or a finished Windows desktop experience.

prospero-win is a separate, documented project for running Windows applications locally on native PS5 homebrew. Its README describes an experimental runtime rather than a complete PC replacement.
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
How its compatibility stack works
- 64-bit Windows applications run through Wine on the PS5’s x86-64 CPU.
- 32-bit software uses a custom x86 translator.
- Direct3D 8 through 11 are translated with DXVK and Vulkan.
- OpenGL games use Mesa’s Zink layer on Vulkan.
- The project also documents GDI support, audio, a game launcher, per-game profiles and save synchronization.
- DualSense controls are supported, along with USB keyboard and mouse input and custom mappings for games designed around those controls.
The project explicitly says that supporting 32-bit and 64-bit software does not mean every modern Windows game will work. It does not bypass digital-rights management or anti-cheat systems, load kernel drivers or provide game files. Users must supply their own legally obtained copies.
Games and performance reported by prospero-win
The project lists selected playable examples, including Half-Life 2, Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition, Half-Life, Counter-Strike 1.6, OpenArena, Warcraft III, Space Cadet Pinball and Wine Minesweeper.

| Game | Project-reported result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Half-Life 2 | 60 FPS at High settings | Claim from the prospero-win project, not an independent benchmark |
| Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition | Around 55 FPS in the open city at 1080p | Project-reported figure; results can vary by scene and configuration |
| Half-Life, Counter-Strike 1.6 and OpenArena | Above 60 FPS | Project-reported figures, not third-party testing |
These examples show that selected older or less demanding games can be practical targets. They do not demonstrate that current AAA releases, games with intrusive anti-cheat, or titles requiring Windows kernel drivers will run.

What you need to try prospero-win
The documented installation requirements apply to prospero-win, not to Mihawk OS. A prospective user needs:
Rank #3
- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
- A PS5 capable of running homebrew.
- A compatible FTP server and ELF loader.
- An application loader and the required bundled helper components.
- The user’s own copy of the Windows game.
- A Linux PC for installation.
The runtime itself does not use firmware-specific offsets, but the jailbreak, loader and bundled helper have firmware dependencies. Consequently, a console that cannot run the required homebrew chain cannot simply install the runtime like a retail PS5 application.
Can Steam games run directly on a stock retail PS5?
No. A stock retail PS5 running Sony’s standard firmware does not provide a supported way to install and execute Windows Steam games locally. The projects discussed here depend on a homebrew-enabled console, loaders and experimental software. They are fundamentally different from installing a PC game on an unmodified retail system.
Rank #4
- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Even on a compatible console, a Steam title may fail because of its launcher, DRM, anti-cheat, graphics requirements, missing Windows components or unsupported input and driver dependencies. Local execution should be evaluated game by game.
Mihawk OS versus prospero-win
| Criterion | Reported Mihawk OS direction | prospero-win |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | No established public release in the available evidence | Public experimental builds and documentation are described |
| Purpose | Planned Windows 11-style environment expanding PS5 Proton | Windows compatibility runtime for native PS5 homebrew |
| Compatibility information | Few tested games reported; detailed specification not established | Specific game list, architecture details and graphics layers documented |
| Execution model | Goals include local Windows gaming through Proton | Local execution through Wine, an x86 translator, DXVK and Vulkan |
| Requirements | Not publicly established | Homebrew-capable PS5, compatible loaders, a Linux PC and user-owned games |
The name “Mihawk” also requires caution. The prospero-win repository credits a contributor named mihawk-99 for Wine-on-PS5 fixes and Mesa work, but available reporting does not establish that this contributor is the same person associated with PS5 Proton or Mihawk OS.

- Ray Tracing, immerse yourself in owrlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games
What this means for PS5 owners
- For stock-console owners: there is no supported direct route to run Windows Steam games locally.
- For experienced homebrew users: prospero-win offers an experimental way to test selected games if the console, loaders and Linux setup meet its requirements.
- For people waiting for Mihawk OS: treat it as a reported development plan until a primary project release, build instructions and compatibility documentation appear.
- For multiplayer players: anti-cheat and DRM limitations can block games even when the underlying graphics and CPU translation work.
Why the distinction matters
A compatibility runtime that runs a handful of older games is not equivalent to a general-purpose Windows desktop on PS5. The evidence currently supports a narrow, experimental achievement: selected Windows applications can run locally on a jailbroken console through several translation layers. It does not support claims that arbitrary modern PC games, protected online titles or a full Windows 11 environment are ready for everyday use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Mihawk OS available to download now?
A public release is not established in the available evidence. Mihawk OS is currently described as a development direction for PS5 Proton.
Does prospero-win replace Windows on a PS5?
No. It is an experimental compatibility runtime using Wine, translation layers and Vulkan to run selected Windows applications on PS5 homebrew.
Will anti-cheat games work?
There is no such guarantee. The project states that it does not bypass DRM or anti-cheat and does not load kernel drivers, so many protected games may not run.
The Bottom Line
Mihawk OS could eventually make Windows-style gaming on jailbroken PS5 consoles more accessible, but that future project should not be confused with prospero-win’s current, limited experimental support. Today’s evidence points to selected local game launches—not a released Windows replacement or broad PC-game compatibility.
