Apple’s fourth-generation Apple TV 4K is a real 2026 hardware refresh, but I’m not buying one. The $299 U.S. price, required accessories for its biggest audio feature, and planned Siri AI support for older Apple TV 4K models make it a poor value for many current owners. The upgrade is worthwhile only if you specifically need its microphones, A19 performance, AV1 decoding, Find My remote, or four-HomePod theater mode.
What Apple announced
Apple announced the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K on October 13, 2026. Pre-orders opened the same day, with store availability scheduled for November 13, 2026. There is one configuration: 128GB for $299 in the United States.
The enclosure remains broadly familiar. MacRumors reports no obvious redesign beyond a centered status light, so this is primarily an internal upgrade rather than a new-looking living-room device.

A19 chip and AV1 decoding
The main change is Apple’s A19 system-on-chip. Apple claims up to 50% faster CPU performance and up to twice the graphics performance of the previous generation’s A15. Those are vendor claims, not independent benchmark results; completed laboratory testing was not available before the scheduled store launch.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
The A19 also includes a dedicated AV1 decoder. AV1 can deliver high-quality video with less bandwidth, which may help streaming services use data more efficiently. The benefit will depend on whether a service provides AV1 streams and whether your network, television and audio setup can take advantage of them.
Built-in microphones for hands-free Siri
The box has three far-field microphones. That lets you speak to Siri without holding the remote, potentially making searches and follow-up questions more natural. Apple describes Siri AI as supporting conversational discovery, follow-up questions and requests using personal context when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.

The updated Siri Remote supports Find My Precision Finding and can play a sound, addressing one of the most common Apple TV annoyances: losing the remote in a sofa or another room. TechRadar reports that the remote is backward compatible with Apple TV HD and earlier Apple TV 4K models. Existing owners may therefore be able to buy the remote separately instead of replacing a working box, although Apple’s standalone price was not stated in the available information.

Four-speaker HomePod surround sound
The new Apple TV 4K can coordinate four HomePod speakers as front and rear pairs. Apple specifies matching pairs, including four HomePod mini 2 units or compatible combinations using second-generation HomePod models.
That is an ambitious feature, but it is not an inexpensive plug-in upgrade. TechRadar’s example system totals range from approximately $895 to $1,695 before room-layout considerations or existing equipment. Those are illustrative totals, not a complete Apple price list for every combination.

Why Siri AI is not enough to justify replacing an older box
Apple and MacRumors state that Siri AI is planned in beta for Apple TV 4K (second generation or later). That includes the 2022 third-generation model and means a current owner can receive the headline conversational-Siri capability without purchasing the $299 fourth-generation box.

The older hardware will not gain the new box’s microphones, A19 chip, AV1 decoder or Find My hardware, but Siri availability removes the most obvious software-only reason to upgrade. Owners should check their region, software version and Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone requirements before assuming every Siri AI function will appear immediately.

Who should buy the new Apple TV 4K?
- Home-theater builders: You already plan to use four compatible HomePods and want Apple’s front-and-rear speaker arrangement.
- Hands-free Siri users: You want microphones in the television cabinet rather than speaking into a remote or phone.
- Performance-focused buyers: You run demanding games or expect to keep the box for many years and value the A19’s claimed CPU and graphics gains.
- AV1-dependent streamers: Your services and network use AV1 and the lower-bandwidth delivery has practical value in your setup.
- People who constantly lose remotes: Find My Precision Finding is useful, especially if you do not want to replace the whole box.
Who should skip it?
- Most 2022 owners: Your existing Apple TV 4K is scheduled to receive Siri AI in beta, so Siri alone does not require new hardware.
- Budget-conscious streamers: $299 is a substantial price for a streaming box, particularly now that Apple no longer offers a cheaper fourth-generation tier.
- Owners without HomePods: The marquee surround feature requires four compatible speakers, turning a set-top-box purchase into an ecosystem project.
- Anyone satisfied with current performance: The exterior is nearly unchanged, and Apple’s speed figures have not been independently verified.
My buying decision
I would keep a working Apple TV 4K, install Siri AI when it becomes available, and consider the standalone updated remote if finding it is the real problem. I would buy the fourth-generation box only when the microphones, A19, AV1 decoding or four-speaker HomePod arrangement solves a specific need that the current device cannot.
That judgment may change after November 13, 2026, when independent benchmarks, compatibility testing and long-term reliability reports become possible. Until then, the fourth-generation model is a targeted upgrade—not a must-have replacement for every existing owner.
