Setting limits on children’s social media and AI use works best as a family plan: agree on expectations first, then use device and platform controls to help put them into practice. The headline points to six parents’ experiences, but their individual accounts and the limits they chose are not available here, so this guide does not attribute specific rules or quotations to them.

Why families are rethinking digital boundaries

Social media and AI tools create different questions for parents. Social platforms can compete with sleep, schoolwork, and family time; AI chatbots add the possibility of private, one-to-one conversations that parents may not know about. A useful boundary should address the activity at issue—not just the number of minutes a child spends on a screen.

A July 2026 Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) release reported results from a survey of more than 4,000 parents and children ages 10–17 in the United States and Australia. Fielded by Ipsos in spring 2026, the survey found a gap between parents’ and children’s reports of online activity, widest for generative AI. That is a survey finding, not proof that parents can reliably detect or prevent a particular activity. FOSI’s findings and methodology

Start with a family plan, then add controls

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission recommends that families discuss rules and expectations before considering parental controls. That order matters: controls can support a shared agreement, but they cannot explain why a rule exists or resolve every disagreement.

  1. Agree on the concern. Identify what the boundary is meant to protect—such as sleep, schoolwork, family time, privacy, or safety.
  2. Make the rule concrete. Specify when, where, or how a service may be used. For example, a family might agree that phones stay out of bedrooms overnight or that a child discusses a new AI service with a parent before using it.
  3. Choose a proportionate control. Use the device’s built-in tools or a platform’s settings to help enforce the agreement. Check what the control actually covers and whether the child can still reach the service elsewhere.
  4. Review the arrangement together. As children mature and services change, revisit the rule and the settings rather than assuming a one-time setup will remain appropriate.

The FTC lists free tools from Apple, Google, and Microsoft for setting limits, applying restrictions, and viewing activity information. These tools can help, but they do not necessarily cover every service or replace family discussion. See the FTC’s guide to making a family screen-time plan.

Choose boundaries that fit the problem

There is no single approach established as best for every household. Before relying on a conversation, software setting, or physical routine, consider whether it fits the child’s age and device, how easy it is to work around, what activity information it reveals, and whether the child can still contact family in an emergency.

  • Service or feature restrictions: More targeted when the concern involves a particular platform or feature, including one-to-one AI conversations. Confirm the exact setting and its availability on the child’s account.
  • Overnight device routines: Some families remove phones overnight, a strategy described in Associated Press reporting. A lockbox could be one optional way to store devices, but the report does not evaluate or recommend lockboxes. Whatever the routine, preserve an appropriate way for a child to reach family or emergency help. Associated Press background on what parents should know

What current policy and platform measures say

United Kingdom: pilots and proposed protections

On March 25, 2026, the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology announced pilots involving 300 teenage households. The pilots were intended to examine social-media restrictions, time limits, and curfews, including possible effects on sleep, family life, and schoolwork. They are trials, not evidence that a particular rule works for every family. The government’s pilot announcement

What parental-control survey results can—and cannot—show

In its July 2026 release, FOSI said between 81% and 86% of surveyed parents and children reported that parental controls worked, depending on the control. Those figures reflect respondents’ own assessments in the survey conducted by Ipsos; they are not the results of an independent trial measuring whether controls caused safer or healthier outcomes. A control’s usefulness in one household does not establish that it will work the same way for another child, device, or service.
