Dungeons & Dragons is moving into a new crossover phase. Wizards of the Coast has announced D&D: World of Warcraft for November 17, 2026, and its first official Star Wars collaboration for 2027 under the new Universes Beyond banner. The slate combines licensed worlds with renewed attention to classic D&D settings.
What the “new era” means
At Gen Con 2026, Wizards of the Coast presented Universes Beyond as a broader publishing direction for D&D. The program brings outside fictional universes into the tabletop role-playing game while also revisiting settings that originated within D&D.
Dan Ayoub, head of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise at Wizards, described the plan as an expansion into worlds such as World of Warcraft alongside renewed work on Dark Sun, Dragonlance and Greyhawk. That combination matters: Universes Beyond is not replacing D&D’s own settings, but placing licensed and classic worlds on the same publishing slate.
When is Star Wars coming to D&D?
Star Wars is scheduled to arrive in 2027 as part of Universes Beyond’s Season of Rebellion. Wizards presented it as the first official D&D and Star Wars collaboration, rather than an unofficial adaptation or a fan-made rules conversion.
New York Comic Con reporting identified two physical books for the line. Both are described as 2027 releases, but an exact day, month and retailer preorder window have not been announced.

The pairing suggests that Wizards intends to provide both a rules starting point and playable scenario material. It does not yet establish how characters, Force abilities, starships, vehicles or combat will work.
What is D&D: World of Warcraft?
D&D: World of Warcraft is identified as the first Universes Beyond expansion. Wizards announced a release date of November 17, 2026 at Gen Con 2026. Its position ahead of the Star Wars books makes it the first test of the new crossover strategy in published D&D.

The World of Warcraft announcement also provides the clearest context for the Star Wars project: Wizards is establishing a continuing label for campaigns set in worlds beyond traditional D&D continuity, rather than treating each licensed setting as an isolated experiment.
Can you run a Star Wars campaign with D&D?
The announced D&D Star Wars Core Rules and Tyro Squadron Adventures indicate that Wizards is packaging the basic rules and an adventure needed to begin a campaign. However, the available announcements do not specify the rules engine, class structure, Force mechanics, vehicle or starship rules, page counts, pricing, formats or final release dates.

Until Wizards publishes those details, groups should treat the books as forthcoming official support rather than assume that existing D&D classes, spells or equipment will transfer unchanged. A group planning a campaign can reasonably wait for the Core Rules before deciding whether it needs additional material; the Tyro Squadron book appears aimed at supplying a focused Rebel-era starting scenario.

Additional art and information were shown at the Disney/Lucasfilm publishing panel at New York Comic Con. More information is expected at Star Wars Celebration in April 2027. That event is the next stated opportunity for details about the books, their setting scope and their mechanics.

Why this matters for D&D players
For players, the announcement creates an official route to a Star Wars campaign supported by D&D’s publisher instead of relying solely on independent conversions. For Dungeon Masters, the two-book structure could separate campaign-building rules from a ready-made introduction, allowing a group to start with the Rebel mission or design a different story once the core material is understood.
The broader significance is strategic. World of Warcraft and Star Wars place highly recognizable external universes beside Dark Sun, Dragonlance and Greyhawk. D&D’s next phase will therefore be defined by both cross-franchise settings and renewed investment in its own history.
