Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said its website was targeted by a cyberattack on October 8, 2026, but security systems mitigated it without disrupting services. The ministry said it was monitoring the incident with national authorities and would work with Romania and other EU members on proposals to designate those responsible for cyberattacks.
What happened to the Farnesina website?
In a statement published October 8, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAECI), also known as the Farnesina, said its website had been targeted that morning. It reported that security systems had mitigated the attack without causing service disruption. MAECI’s statement did not describe the attack method or provide technical indicators.
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said cybersecurity was a key part of the ministry’s reform and that Italy had strengthened its prevention, monitoring and response capabilities in recent months, including through technological countermeasures.

These are figures reported by the ministry, not independently audited counts in the sources cited here. The CSIRT room is an institutional incident-response capability.
Who was behind the attack?
Euronews reported that the pro-Russian hacker group NoName targeted the ministry website. The ministry’s statement did not name an attacker, so the group identification is a media report, not an official attribution or an independently confirmed finding in the cited accounts.

What EU action is Italy seeking?
Italy said it would work with Romania and other EU member states to put forward proposals at forthcoming European meetings to designate actors responsible for cyberattacks, including attacks on Italian institutions. This is an intended proposal: the ministry’s account does not say the EU has adopted a measure or designated anyone in connection with this incident.
