The source associated with this title does not establish that a cheap SSD failed—or that spending more would have prevented a failure. It points instead to a broader shift: moving from spinning disks to SSDs, including NVMe drives, changed the performance assumptions behind computer systems. Without the original experience or evidence comparing drives, the title’s personal lesson cannot responsibly be presented as a general buying rule.

What the title’s source actually says

In Lex Fridman Podcast #474, published July 12, 2025, guest DHH discusses the transition from spinning disks to NVMe and SSDs. He describes how that change affected the way systems and databases had to be designed. In that context, he says, “This happened with SSDs.” The remark concerns technology progress and changing design assumptions; it is not a report of an SSD failure or advice to avoid inexpensive drives. Read the transcript.

Does this show that cheaper SSDs are less reliable?

No. The cited passage gives no SSD failure rates, endurance measurements, warranty comparisons, or price-tier analysis. It does not name a drive or describe the event implied by the title. It therefore cannot support the claim that a less expensive SSD is more likely to fail, or that paying more would have prevented a particular problem.

Why the move from hard drives to SSDs changed system design

Spinning disks and solid-state drives behave differently, so software and infrastructure designed around one storage type may not make the same assumptions when used with another. DHH’s point is that the transition to faster storage, including NVMe SSDs, changed the conditions systems were built to handle. The transcript offers no quantitative performance comparison, so it should not be used to attach a specific speed advantage to every drive or workload.

What to check before choosing an SSD

The podcast does not identify a compatible drive or a use case. To make a practical choice, start with the device and workload rather than price alone:

  • Compatibility: Check the device’s supported form factor and storage interface. “NVMe SSD” is a category, not a guarantee that a particular drive will fit or work in every computer.
  • Capacity: Estimate the space your operating system, applications, files, and planned growth require.
  • Workload: Consider whether the drive will serve everyday use, sustained heavy writes, or another demanding task; the needs may differ.
  • Budget: Compare specific, compatible options against your needs. The cited source does not establish a price point at which reliability improves.

What can—and cannot—be concluded

The defensible takeaway is that storage technology can change the assumptions behind system design. The available source does not verify the personal incident in the title or establish a general rule that cheaper SSDs are a bad buy. A sound recommendation would require details about the drive, the device, the workload, and evidence comparing the relevant options.
