Buy the Switch 2 edition if you want handheld play, Nintendo’s hybrid form factor, or confirmed cross-play with friends on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC. Buy on another platform if everyone in your pair already uses that platform and portability is unimportant. EA specifies 60 FPS at native 1080p in docked mode on Switch 2, but the official information does not provide equivalent PS5, Xbox, or PC performance figures, so there is no evidence-based graphics winner.
The short answer
It Takes Two is designed for two-player co-op, so the right version depends first on where both players will play, then on whether you need portability. Switch 2 is the most flexible choice when one player wants to play handheld or when the pair uses different platforms: EA says the Switch 2 edition supports online cross-play with PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Choose the original Nintendo Switch edition only when both players are using the original Switch version or when you specifically need its existing edition and setup. Do not assume that an older page saying “no cross-play” describes Switch 2; that statement applies to the original Switch edition.

On performance, the only directly published target in the available official material is Switch 2 docked mode: 60 frames per second at native 1080p, with maximum texture resolution and improved lighting, visual-effect complexity, and dynamic-shadow quality. The Switch 2 launch is scheduled for October 15, 2026 in most regions and October 16 in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. EA announced a standard price of $39.99; local prices and availability can change. As of October 13, 2026, the game had not launched in most regions.

Switch 2: the strongest all-round choice for mixed-platform pairs
Cross-play with the major current platforms
EA specifically lists Switch 2 online play with PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This makes Switch 2 practical when partners do not share a console family. Confirm that each person is using the Switch 2 edition or a supported route before buying: cross-play is edition-sensitive, and the original Switch edition is not included in the general Switch 2 cross-play list.
Hybrid and handheld play
Switch 2 is the only option in this comparison that combines a Nintendo handheld form factor with docked television play. EA’s published performance statement applies to docked mode, not automatically to handheld mode. The material reviewed does not state a handheld frame-rate or resolution target, so do not treat the docked specification as a handheld guarantee.

EA specifies 60 FPS docked at native 1080p. It also describes maximum texture resolution and improvements to lighting, visual-effect complexity, and dynamic-shadow quality. These are the publisher’s specifications, not an independent side-by-side test against the other platforms.

Local co-op requirements
For Nintendo Switch couch co-op, EA says you need two Joy-Cons or two gamepad controllers. Couch co-op can be played offline. Check your household’s controller count and comfort before choosing a local setup; no particular controller model is established as necessary by the available information.
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: choose the platform your pair already uses
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are straightforward choices when both players already use the same console family, have the required online access, and do not need handheld play. They are also valid cross-play partners for a Switch 2 player according to EA.
Do not buy one of these editions solely on the assumption that it has a higher frame rate or resolution than Switch 2. The official pages reviewed do not provide comparable PS5 or Xbox performance targets. Without like-for-like settings, resolution modes, and frame-rate measurements, a ranking would go beyond the evidence.
If one friend owns Switch 2 and the other owns PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, verify the exact edition and online route in the current support documentation before purchase. The general cross-play capability is advertised for Switch 2, while the original Switch edition has different limitations.
PC: check the requirements before buying
PC is appropriate when both players meet the hardware requirements and want keyboard, mouse, or graphics-setting flexibility. Requirements indicate whether the game should install and run within the publisher’s supported baseline; they do not establish a comparative frame-rate result against consoles.

The purchase information also lists recommended CPU and GPU hardware and 16 GB RAM. The exact recommended processor and graphics models should be checked on EA’s current purchase page because requirements can vary by listing and region. EA’s pages do not provide a PC benchmark table that can be used to rank a compliant PC against Switch 2, PS5, or Xbox.

Friend’s Pass: how one purchase can be enough
Friend’s Pass lets one player who owns the full game invite a second player who downloads the free Friend’s Pass. If neither player owns the game, Friend’s Pass provides access to the first chapter as a trial. The player who owns the full game controls hosting.
Online play requires the relevant platform subscription for both players. Couch co-op does not require an online connection and can be played offline. Because Friend’s Pass behavior depends on the platform and edition, it is not safe to assume that any two storefront downloads will pair automatically.
- Confirm the exact platform and edition each player will use.
- Have one player purchase the full game on that platform.
- Have the other player download the matching Friend’s Pass from the appropriate platform store.
- Start the invitation from the full-game owner’s account and follow the in-game prompt.
- If the invitation fails, verify that both installations are updated and that the editions are compatible before purchasing another copy.

Switch 2 cross-play and the original Switch edition
Two EA pages can appear contradictory if their dates and editions are ignored. The older Nintendo Switch feature page says the Nintendo Switch edition must play with another Switch player and has no cross-play. That information concerns the original Switch release. EA’s newer Switch 2 support and launch pages separately advertise cross-play with PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
For a pair that includes an original Switch console, check the route carefully. EA documents Gameshare for local joining by Switch players and describes a particular online route when a Switch 2 player downgrades from the Switch 2 edition. Those details do not turn the original Switch edition into a universal cross-play version. The safe approach is to identify the exact edition on every console, then confirm the supported pairing in the current help page.

Upgrade from Nintendo Switch to Switch 2
Existing Nintendo Switch owners are promised a free upgrade to the Switch 2 edition. EA Help states that upgrades are available only from the Nintendo Switch edition, not from other platforms. The launch announcement notes a small price for Japan because of legal restrictions, so Japanese customers should check the local Nintendo storefront rather than assuming the same upgrade terms as other regions.

EA attributes this statement to “Team Hazelight”: “We are very happy to finally bring It Takes Two to even more players on Nintendo Switch 2. Everyone who owns the game on Nintendo Switch can upgrade for free! Our partners at Turn Me Up Games have done a great job optimizing the game.” The quotation identifies Team Hazelight but does not name an individual speaker.
Before deleting an existing installation or changing accounts, confirm that the Nintendo Switch purchase is tied to the Nintendo account that will use the Switch 2. If the upgrade option is missing, check the edition, region, account, and storefront date first; do not buy a second copy until those details are resolved.

EA announced a $39.99 standard price for the Switch 2 edition. That is an announced standard price, not a guarantee of the final local currency amount, tax-inclusive total, promotion, or physical-versus-digital format. The available information does not establish current retailer stock or a physical Switch 2 cartridge.
For online co-op, both players need the relevant subscription required by their platform. Subscription names, prices, and availability are controlled by each platform holder and can change by country. Couch co-op avoids that online-subscription requirement.

Which version should you buy? A decision framework
Choose Switch 2 when:
- At least one player wants handheld or hybrid play.
- Your partner is on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC and you want the specifically advertised cross-play path.
- You already own the original Nintendo Switch edition and qualify for the stated upgrade.
