Isle of Berk, also listed as Claws of Berk, is a Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2 modpack running on Forge. It combines tameable and breedable dragons, Viking weapons and armor, dungeons, unusual terrain generation, ships, villages and multiplayer. The current CurseForge files listing identifies client and dedicated-server files as release 3.2.6, uploaded October 6, 2026. Install that same release on every client and on the server; mixing pack versions is the most avoidable cause of connection and world problems.

What Isle of Berk (Claws of Berk) is

Claws of Berk is a How to Train Your Dragon-inspired modpack created by kesselot. Its core loop is broader than a single dragon mod: you explore a changed world, find dungeons and settlements, gather Viking-style equipment, and raise dragons for travel and combat. The project description presents the intended experience as an adventure in a world filled with dragons, while the Modrinth overview specifically highlights riding, taming and breeding different dragons.

The pack supports both normal client play and dedicated servers. That makes it suitable for a solo world, a privately hosted game, or a public server, provided all participants use the same Minecraft, Forge and modpack versions.

Version, loader and files you need

Item Required value or file Why it matters
Minecraft edition Java Edition The pack is not a Bedrock add-on.
Minecraft version 1.18.2 Use this version for both the client profile and server.
Mod loader Forge The pack’s mods and launch files expect Forge.
Current listed pack ClawsOfBerk-[3.2.6] Use the same release on every player’s profile.
Dedicated-server download ClawsOfBerk+Server-[3.2.6] Use the matching server archive rather than assembling mods manually.
Supported environments Client and server You can play locally or connect to a dedicated server.

The 3.2.6 entries are the current files shown on the CurseForge listing as of October 6, 2026. If a newer release is displayed when you install, select one release deliberately and make every client and the server use it. Do not assume that two releases with the same 3.2 major number are interchangeable unless the creator documents that compatibility.

How to install the client

Use either the CurseForge app or the Modrinth app to create the profile. The official project pages provide compatibility metadata, but they do not publish a creator-written, click-by-click installer manual, so labels can differ slightly between app versions.

  1. Install Minecraft Java Edition. Sign in with the account that owns Java Edition and open the official launcher.
  2. Launch vanilla 1.18.2 once. Create or select a 1.18.2 installation and start it until the title screen appears. This creates the game profile and required directories before the mod manager installs its instance.
  3. Find the project in your mod manager. Search for “Isle of Berk” or “Claws of Berk,” choose the project by kesselot, and select the Minecraft 1.18.2 Forge release. Do not choose a similarly named, newer-Minecraft project.
  4. Let the app install the complete profile. Keep the downloaded mods, configuration files, scripts and resource-pack files together. A manually copied mod from another version can make the profile fail to launch or disconnect from a server.
  5. Start the profile once. Wait for the Forge loading process and confirm that the pack reaches its title screen. The first start can take longer while files and configuration are generated.
  6. Create or import a world. For a new save, use the pack’s world generation. For an existing save, make a separate backup before opening it with the pack.

Client checks before joining friends

  • Read the profile’s Minecraft version and confirm it says 1.18.2.
  • Confirm the loader is Forge, not Fabric or an unmodded installation.
  • Compare the complete pack release with the server owner; “3.2.x” is not precise enough.
  • Do not remove configuration or resource-pack files to shorten loading time.
  • Start the profile locally before troubleshooting a multiplayer connection. This separates an installation problem from a network problem.

How to make a dedicated Claws of Berk server

The project license allows private and public servers. The official files page supplies a dedicated-server archive, which is safer than copying the client mods one by one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the release. Download the ClawsOfBerk+Server-[3.2.6] archive, or the exact server archive corresponding to the client release you selected.
  2. Create a clean server directory. Extract the archive into a new folder used only for this world. Avoid placing it inside another Forge or vanilla server directory.
  3. Run the supplied Forge/server launcher. Use the launcher and scripts included in the archive. Launcher filenames and startup arguments can vary by release and hosting provider, so do not substitute a command from an older pack.
  4. Accept the EULA. The first run normally creates eula.txt and stops. Open that file, change the acceptance value to true only after reading the Minecraft EULA, save it, and start the supplied launcher again.
  5. Set server properties. After the first successful start, stop the server cleanly and edit server.properties. Set the world name, difficulty, player limit, online-mode policy and other options required by your group. Keep the default port unless you have a reason to change it.
  6. Generate the world. Start the server and allow it to create the world and pack configuration. Stop it with the server’s stop command rather than closing the window, which can leave files incomplete.
  7. Open access for players. Players on the same local network can use the server’s local address. Internet players need the server’s public address and reachable port; router forwarding, firewall rules and your internet provider’s network policy determine whether that is possible.
  8. Install the matching client. Every player should install the same Minecraft 1.18.2 Forge profile and exact Claws of Berk release before connecting.

What the server archive does not guarantee

The pack files do not establish a universal RAM setting, maximum player count or required port-forwarding method. Those depend on the world, view distance, number of players, operating system and host. Start with the launch settings included in the archive, watch memory and tick performance while players explore, and adjust conservatively rather than copying an unsupported figure.

Self-hosting or rented hosting?

Both approaches can run the pack. Choose based on who will maintain the files and network rather than on an advertised specification that is not measured for this pack.

Decision factor Self-hosted computer Rented game server
Setup effort Install Java/Forge files, configure the server, firewall and possibly router forwarding. Usually easier if the control panel supports importing a custom Forge pack; you still upload or select the matching server files.
Control Full access to launch arguments, files, configs, backups and logs. Depends on the provider’s panel and file access; some settings may be restricted.
Backups You must schedule and verify them yourself. The provider may offer automated backups, but confirm retention and download access rather than assuming they exist.
Player capacity Limited by your hardware, upload bandwidth and concurrent workload. Limited by the purchased plan and the provider’s hardware; no pack-specific benchmark is published.
Network accessibility Requires a reachable address, firewall configuration and sometimes port forwarding. Normally supplies a public address, subject to the provider’s network and terms.
Pack import support You can use the supplied archive directly. Check that the panel accepts Minecraft 1.18.2 Forge and a custom server pack before paying.
Price Uses hardware and electricity you already own; ongoing cost varies. Recurring rental cost; current pricing and included resources vary by provider.
Support You diagnose Forge, Java, networking and world issues yourself. Support can help with the host platform, but not necessarily with pack-specific gameplay or mod conflicts.

A Modrinth release page displays a rented-server promotion with code Kess. The provider, price, commission arrangement and validity are not established by the project information, so treat it only as an optional lead and verify the provider’s current terms, hardware, cancellation policy and backup behavior before purchasing.

First goals in a new world

  • The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
  • UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
  • Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
  • The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
  • Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.

Establish a safe base

Dragon encounters range from small creatures to large ones. Before attempting long flights or deep exploration, secure shelter, food, tools, light and a way to store valuable items. A base near accessible terrain gives you a recovery point if an expedition goes wrong.

Read the terrain and world generation

Unusual generation and varied terrain are central to the pack. Spend the first day mapping nearby landmarks instead of sprinting in one direction. Note water crossings, high ground, caves and locations that can serve as navigation references.

Find dungeons, ships and villages

Dungeons are an explicit exploration goal, while Viking ships and villages are named points of interest. Carry spare tools and storage for loot, and mark coordinates before entering a structure. Returning to a marked location is safer than relying on memory in a world with unfamiliar generation.

  • First player or team to 500 wins.
  • When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!

Learn the dragon progression

The pack lets players tame, ride and breed various dragons. Treat the first creature as a learning opportunity: discover what food, interaction and protection it needs before committing rare supplies. Once you understand the process, breeding can become a long-term travel and collection objective rather than a risky first-night experiment.

Use Viking equipment as part of exploration

Viking weapons and armor support the combat and expedition side of the pack. Upgrade equipment before tackling a distant dungeon, and keep a spare set at base so one lost expedition does not end the world.

Updating without damaging a world

Handle every pack update as a world-maintenance operation. A new mod list or storage implementation can change how blocks, items and saved data are interpreted.

  1. Read the release notes first. Look for changed mods, migration instructions, removed items, resource-pack changes and known crashes.
  2. Stop the server or exit the single-player world cleanly. Never update files while the world is still writing.
  3. Make a restorable backup. Copy the entire world directory, the server configuration and any custom scripts. Keep at least one backup outside the active server folder and label it with the old pack version.
  4. Follow item-migration instructions. The 3.0.3 notes specifically told players to move items out of backpacks and iron chests into vanilla chests before updating or reinstalling. Do this before changing from a version affected by that instruction.
  5. Update every participant together. Install the same new client release and replace the server with its matching server archive. Do not let some players connect with the old profile while others use the new one.
  6. Test the backup copy first. Open a duplicate world with the new files, inspect storage, player inventories, dragons and important builds, and only then schedule the live update.
  7. Keep the old files until the test passes. If the new release causes a crash or missing content, restore the old server and backup rather than repeatedly launching the damaged copy.

Why release notes matter

The 3.1.8 notes record a deadlock-fix mod, resource-pack load-order changes, a chunk-timeout fix and a brewing-stand crash fix. Those examples show that an update can affect startup, rendering, chunk generation and ordinary blocks at the same time. They are also why the client and server should be upgraded as a coordinated change.

Troubleshooting checklist

The launcher crashes before the title screen

  • Confirm the profile is Minecraft 1.18.2 and Forge, not another loader.
  • Verify that the modpack release is complete and that its configuration and resource-pack files were not deleted.
  • Compare the installed release with the current pack entry; remove manually added mods before testing again.
  • Launch the profile once with no world selected. If it still fails, the problem is the installation or Java environment rather than a particular save.

The server stops during startup

  • Check that you ran the launcher supplied in the dedicated-server archive.
  • Read the first error and the surrounding lines in the server log instead of relying on the final “stopped” message.
  • Confirm the EULA value is accepted and that the server directory is writable.
  • Restore the matching release if the server was updated while clients remained on another version.

Players receive a mod-list or version mismatch

  • Compare the exact pack release shown in each profile, not just Minecraft 1.18.2.
  • Check that the server uses the dedicated-server archive for that release.
  • Remove duplicate profiles or shortcuts that may be launching an older instance.

Chunks time out or a brewing stand crashes

Check whether the issue matches a release-specific fix. The 3.1.8 notes mention both chunk-timeout and brewing-stand crash fixes; updating to the documented compatible release may resolve the problem, but make a backup before changing a live world.

Friends cannot connect from outside the home

  • Confirm the server is running and listening on the configured port.
  • Allow the Java server through the host firewall.
  • Verify router forwarding points to the computer running the server and that the internet provider permits inbound connections.
  • Give friends the public address and port, while local players use the local address when appropriate.
  • If network administration is not practical, use a rented server that supports custom Minecraft 1.18.2 Forge files.

Practical preflight checklist

  • Java Edition installed and vanilla 1.18.2 launched once.
  • Forge profile created for Isle of Berk/Claws of Berk.
  • Client and server release numbers identical.
  • Dedicated-server archive extracted into a clean directory.
  • EULA accepted and server.properties reviewed.
  • World, configuration and scripts backed up before an update.
  • Backpacks and iron chests emptied into vanilla chests when following the 3.0.3 migration guidance.
  • Every player tested the profile at the title screen before joining.

Bottom line

Install Claws of Berk as a Minecraft Java 1.18.2 Forge profile, and use the matching dedicated-server archive when playing with friends. The adventure is built around dragons, Viking gear, dungeons and exploration, but reliable multiplayer depends on disciplined version matching and backups. Treat updates as migrations—especially around storage changes—and you can experiment with new releases without sacrificing a world you have invested in.
