Yes—if you want a different, action-focused game and have room for another live-service routine. Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) is a separate urban-fantasy action RPG built around real-time combat, character switching, skills, QTE combos and roguelike gameplay. Its strongest reason to join an existing Honkai: Star Rail (HSR) library is variety, not shared progression. If you mainly want to preserve your current turn-based routine, have limited storage, or do not want another ongoing game, skipping or postponing ZZZ is entirely reasonable.
The decision is about fit rather than which title is universally better. HoYoverse has announced a ZZZ and HSR collaboration trailer and a major ZZZ update for October 21, 2026, so there is a timely reason to sample it. Neither announcement means that characters, inventory or progress transfer between the games.
The short answer: try ZZZ for contrast, not for an extension of Star Rail
ZZZ gives an HSR player a different kind of interaction. HoYoverse describes it as an urban fantasy action RPG whose systems include switching between characters, action-oriented battles, skills, QTE combos and roguelike gameplay (HoYoverse’s game overview). That makes combat preference the most important deciding factor.
If you enjoy the deliberate, menu-driven rhythm you associate with Star Rail but do not want to learn real-time controls, ZZZ may feel like extra work rather than useful variety. If you are curious about directly controlling a team, swapping characters during a fight and exploring a modern supernatural city, ZZZ can complement your existing game. No official source in the available material provides a complete, publisher-authored combat comparison, so the recommendation should remain personal rather than a claim that one system is superior.

What is different about ZZZ?
Real-time, action-oriented combat
HoYoverse’s description emphasizes action-oriented combat, skills, switching between characters and QTE combinations. In practical terms, the attraction is the moment-to-moment control: you are responding during a fight rather than only selecting the next command from a static turn order. The evidence supports calling ZZZ action-focused; it does not support assigning it a lower difficulty, shorter sessions or a better reward structure than HSR.
An urban-fantasy setting
ZZZ takes place in an urban-fantasy world rather than extending HSR’s setting or story. That difference can matter as much as combat. Choose it if the idea of a contemporary city, supernatural threats and a new cast appeals to you. Do not start it expecting your HSR characters, relics, currencies or story choices to carry over.
Roguelike gameplay as an additional mode
Roguelike gameplay is part of the systems HoYoverse lists for ZZZ. The term describes repeatable runs with changing choices or encounters, but the cited overview does not establish a complete current schedule, reward table or required weekly time. Treat it as another source of variety, not proof that the game demands less or more maintenance than HSR.

The crossover is a reason to look, not proof of shared content
HoYoverse announced Version 3.3, “Journey to the Sky,” on October 12, 2026. The update is scheduled for October 21, 2026, so it was still upcoming on the October 13 publication evidence date. The announcement lists a main-story mech combat experience with melee and ranged modes, new S-Rank Agents Phoenix and Severian, and additional content (HoYoverse’s Version 3.3 announcement).
The same announcement says the ZZZ × HSR collaboration trailer is live. A trailer confirms that the collaboration has been announced; it does not, by itself, confirm playable crossover characters, an event start date, physical merchandise, shared rewards or account transfers. Those details should be checked in a later official notice before you make a purchase or plan around them.
Does playing one game help your account in the other?
No shared progression is documented. HoYoverse’s cross-platform guidance explains how to synchronize data within each game when you use the same HoYoverse account. ZZZ supports cross-save across PC, iOS, Android, PlayStation and Xbox. HSR supports progression synchronization across PC, iOS, Android and PlayStation (HoYoverse Help Center, updated September 9, 2025).

Use the same account credentials for the title you want to continue on another supported device, and verify the correct server or region when prompted. The fact that both games can use one HoYoverse account does not mean that a character, item, currency balance or quest state in ZZZ appears in HSR. Consider them two independent games that happen to share an account ecosystem.
Check storage and hardware before installing
Storage is the clearest practical barrier for some HSR players. HoYoverse’s minimum-requirements article, updated August 26, 2025, lists the following figures for ZZZ. These are dated requirements, not a guarantee that future patches will use the same amount of space.

Before downloading, leave more free space than the published minimum where possible. The PC unzip figure is especially easy to miss: a drive can show enough room for the installed files while failing when the launcher needs temporary extraction space. Recheck the current requirements page immediately before installation because a live-service game can change its footprint (HoYoverse Help Center requirements).

Platform and controller considerations
Where you can continue each game
ZZZ’s documented cross-save coverage includes PC, iOS, Android, PlayStation and Xbox. HSR’s documented coverage includes PC, iOS, Android and PlayStation. If you move between devices, use the same HoYoverse account and confirm that you are selecting the intended game server. Xbox support for ZZZ does not imply that HSR has the same platform coverage.
Controller support is currently a PC feature
In a support article updated October 8, 2025, HoYoverse states: “Controller support is currently available only on PC.” The article lists DualSense, DualSense Edge, DualShock 4, Xbox wireless and Xbox Elite wireless controllers as supported for ZZZ on PC (controller and platform support details).

A controller is optional, not a requirement for trying ZZZ. The cited support page does not support mobile controller play at that date, so do not buy an accessory on the assumption that it will work with the phone or tablet version. If you play on PC, confirm the exact model and connection method against the current support page before purchasing.

How to test ZZZ without turning it into a second obligation
- Choose the platform with the most comfortable controls. Use PC if you want to evaluate the listed controller options, or a supported console if you prefer that environment. On mobile, check storage and touch-control comfort first.
- Sign in with the HoYoverse account you intend to keep. This preserves cross-save within ZZZ when you later move among its supported platforms. It does not merge ZZZ and HSR data.
- Confirm space before starting the download. On PC, account for both the 57 GB listed requirement and the additional 58 GB unzip space; on iOS and Android, compare your free space with the dated 26 GB and 20 GB figures.
- Play long enough to judge the control loop, not the announcement. Pay attention to whether real-time switching, skills and QTE timing are enjoyable. A crossover trailer or a new character announcement cannot answer that personal question.
- Keep spending separate from evaluation. Paid web top-ups exist for both titles, but the available documentation does not establish that spending is necessary to try ZZZ or that either game offers better value. Decide whether you like the game before treating a banner or bundle as a purchase decision.
- Reassess your schedule honestly. No comparable official daily or weekly time estimate was established for both games. If adding ZZZ makes your existing routine feel like a chore, that is a valid reason to pause rather than trying to maintain both indefinitely.
What the evidence does—and does not—say about value
There is no supported “better game” verdict
The available official material establishes ZZZ’s action orientation, systems, platform support and upcoming content. It does not establish that ZZZ has better writing, more generous rewards, a lower time commitment, stronger free-to-play value or superior long-term retention than HSR. Community impressions may differ, but they should not be presented as measured comparisons.
Top-ups exist, but spending is a separate decision
HoYoverse provides official web top-up centers for both games and instructs users to select the correct title, account and server (official top-up instructions). That confirms that paid top-ups are available. It does not establish a required purchase, a recommended amount or which game gives better value. Keep payment details and server selection tied to the correct title, particularly if both games are installed.
Who should start ZZZ now?
- Start now if real-time action, active character switching or an urban-fantasy setting sounds more appealing than simply adding more of the same routine.
- Start around Version 3.3 if the announced mech combat, Phoenix, Severian or the collaboration context is your main curiosity—but remember that October 21, 2026 is an announced date, and details can change.
- Try it casually if you are unsure. You can evaluate the controls and atmosphere before deciding whether it deserves a permanent place in your schedule or any spending.
Who should wait or skip it?
- Wait if your available storage is below the dated requirements or your device is near its hardware limits.
- Wait if the part of HSR you value most is its existing battle rhythm and you have no interest in real-time control.
- Skip for now if another live-service game would make gaming feel like a checklist. There is no reliable official time comparison that justifies promising an easier routine.
- Do not start solely for account benefits. The games do not have documented shared progression, so playing ZZZ will not level an HSR account or transfer its inventory.
Final decision
Zenless Zone Zero is worth trying alongside Honkai: Star Rail when you want contrast: real-time, action-focused encounters, character switching, an urban-fantasy world and a separate progression track. The upcoming Version 3.3 update and announced collaboration make October 2026 a timely moment to look, but they are not evidence that the games have merged or that ZZZ will suit everyone.
Check storage, choose a supported platform, use the correct HoYoverse account and judge the controls before spending. If those conditions fit, ZZZ can broaden your HoYoverse library. If they do not, staying with HSR—or waiting until your interest and hardware change—is the sensible answer.
