To check whether your laptop’s internal drive is encrypted, use the operating system’s built-in status screen: Device encryption on Windows, manage-bde for a detailed Windows drive status, or FileVault on a Mac. A Mac with Apple silicon or the T2 Security Chip encrypts its internal storage even when FileVault is off, so the FileVault switch needs hardware context.
Check encryption on a Windows laptop
Windows has two built-in encryption features: Device Encryption, available on some Windows Home devices as well as other editions, and BitLocker Drive Encryption, available on Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. Availability and activation depend on the device and account; a supported feature is not necessarily turned on. See Microsoft’s Device Encryption overview and BitLocker overview.
Use Settings for a quick check
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Check whether Device Encryption is on. If the page is available, its state is the direct check; do not infer that encryption is active merely because the laptop supports it.
Device Encryption may turn on automatically when setup or sign-in uses a Microsoft or work/school account. It is not automatically turned on with a local account. If the control is missing, Microsoft says the device may not support the feature or the signed-in account may be a standard account.
Investigate a missing Device Encryption control
- Open System Information as an administrator.
- Find Automatic Device Encryption Support or Device Encryption Support.
- Read the listed status and reason. Messages such as “Meets prerequisites,” “TPM is not usable,” “WinRE is not configured,” or “PCR7 binding is not supported” describe eligibility or prerequisites, not whether the drive is currently encrypted.
Check a specific drive with Command Prompt
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
manage-bde -status c:to inspect the Windows operating-system drive. - Read the status fields, including Conversion Status. Microsoft documents that this can distinguish Fully Encrypted from Used Space Only Encrypted. Check another volume separately by replacing
c:with its drive letter.
The command and encryption-status fields are documented in Microsoft Learn’s BitLocker guidance. Check the reported protection and conversion state rather than treating the presence of BitLocker tools as proof that protection is active. If encryption has only recently been enabled, inspect its current status instead of assuming the process has finished.

Check FileVault on a Mac
- Open the Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > FileVault.
- Check the displayed FileVault state. Menu wording can vary with macOS release and locale.
Interpret that state according to the Mac’s hardware. On a Mac without Apple silicon or the T2 Security Chip, Apple says FileVault must be enabled to encrypt data. On Apple silicon and T2 Macs, internal storage is encrypted even when FileVault is off. Apple describes FileVault as adding protection that uses the user’s password with the hardware UID; with FileVault off, the volume encryption key is protected by the hardware UID. See Apple’s FileVault user guide and its explanation of volume encryption.
Find and protect your recovery route
Windows BitLocker recovery key
A BitLocker recovery key is a unique 48-digit numerical password. Windows may request it after a potential unauthorized change, but routine hardware, firmware, or software changes can also trigger a recovery prompt. If the key cannot be found, access to the drive may be blocked. An automatically enabled Device Encryption key may be saved to a Microsoft account or work/school account; on an organization-managed laptop, an administrator may hold it. Confirm the correct account or contact IT before changing firmware or hardware. Details are in Microsoft’s BitLocker overview.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Mac FileVault recovery key
If you use a FileVault recovery key, Apple describes it as a generated string of letters and numbers and advises storing it somewhere safe other than the encrypted startup disk. Depending on setup, it may be stored through iCloud Keychain or escrowed by device management. Apple warns that losing both the available login recovery route and the recovery key can mean losing files and settings. See Apple’s FileVault security guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat encryption does—and does not—tell you
These checks concern data stored on the drive. Microsoft describes BitLocker as helping protect a drive when it is offline and someone tries to read it without the key. An encrypted drive is not, by itself, a guarantee against malware or exposure of data while the laptop is unlocked.

Chromebooks and Linux laptops
Google’s cited ChromeOS device inventory documents a memory-encryption algorithm field for managed devices, but it does not establish a general consumer-facing procedure for checking encryption on a personal Chromebook. Managed Chromebook users can ask their administrator what the reported field means for their device; do not treat an enterprise inventory field as a direct personal status check. Google’s documentation is at View ChromeOS device list and details.
No general Linux check is given here: steps depend on the distribution, installation choices, and volume setup. Do not apply Windows or Mac menu paths to a Linux laptop.
