If several devices cannot get online, compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection, check your provider’s outage tools, and inspect the connection path before blaming the modem or router. A single test cannot identify a failed box: the cause could also be Wi-Fi coverage, a client device, cabling, router settings, or the provider’s line.
First, find out how much of the connection is failing
Check the same task on another device connected to your home network. Make sure a phone is actually using Wi-Fi, not quietly switching to cellular data. Then note whether the problem affects one device, only Wi-Fi devices, one app or website, or nearly all internet use.
- One device fails: Check that device’s network connection and troubleshoot or update it. If other devices work normally, a general modem or provider outage is less likely.
- One app or website fails: Try a different service. A problem limited to one destination does not establish that your home internet equipment is at fault.
- Several devices and services fail: Continue with wired and near-router comparisons, then check the provider’s status and diagnostics.
Connection speed can vary with the client device, distance, Wi-Fi band, and physical barriers, as Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance explains.
Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
Run the same task or speed test first in the usual location, then close to the router. If practical, connect a computer to a router LAN port with Ethernet and test again. Microsoft describes the basic wired connection from a Windows PC to a home router.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Ethernet works, but Wi-Fi is weak: Focus on wireless coverage, router or mesh placement, obstacles, nearby interference, and client capabilities. This points toward a local wireless issue, not proof that the router is defective.
- Wi-Fi improves close to the router: Distance or barriers may be reducing the signal where you usually connect.
- Wired and wireless both fail on multiple devices: Check the provider service, incoming line, modem or gateway, and router WAN path. This result raises suspicion of an upstream or shared-network problem but does not isolate the modem.
For Nest Wifi and Google Wifi, Google specifies Ethernet ports supporting 10/100/1000 Mbps and recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 for internet speeds above 100 Mbps; the slowest component in the path limits the result. Those specifications apply to those product families, not all routers. See Google’s speed and connectivity guidance. An Ethernet cable is useful for comparison, not a remedy for a provider outage or faulty modem.
Trace the physical connection and interpret lights by model
Follow the path from the provider’s incoming cable, DSL, or fiber connection to the modem or gateway; from the modem’s LAN port to the separate router’s WAN port, if you have two devices; and from the router to the client. Check that devices have power, reseat visible Ethernet plugs, and look for damaged cables. Record current settings and connections before changing anything.

Google’s router setup guidance checks the modem’s connection to the service source and the router’s WAN cable to the modem. Indicator lights do not have universal meanings: consult the manual or ISP instructions for your exact model and service. For example, Verizon’s troubleshooting guide treats a blinking high-speed internet light differently from solid lights with no access; that is not a general LED code for other equipment.

Check for a provider outage, then restart safely
Use your ISP’s outage-status page or diagnostic tool before changing equipment settings. These tools may expose line or provisioning problems that a Wi-Fi connection indicator cannot. Xfinity offers outage lookup and online troubleshooting; Verizon provides service troubleshooting. Availability and options can depend on provider, account, and region.
If there is no reported outage, restart equipment using the sequence from your ISP or manufacturer. For a separate modem and router, follow the instructions for that setup rather than assuming every brand uses the same order. Google’s procedure for its equipment includes disconnecting modem power and, in that procedure, Ethernet; waiting until the lights are off; reconnecting; waiting for the Internet light; and testing again. If the problem persists, Google advises contacting the ISP. See Google’s restart and connectivity instructions. Restarting is not the same as a factory reset: a reset can erase configuration and make recovery harder, so do not use it casually. Restart duration also varies; Xfinity says its gateway restart can take up to 12 minutes in its troubleshooting guidance.

Choose the right support path
- Only one client has trouble: Troubleshoot that device and confirm it is connected to the intended home network.
- Wired service works but Wi-Fi does not: Focus on placement, distance, barriers, interference, and router or mesh configuration. Google lists these alongside band, client capabilities, household use, delivered ISP speed, and Ethernet cable or port limits as factors that can affect performance: Wi-Fi speed and connectivity and connection troubleshooting.
- Multiple devices fail over Ethernet and Wi-Fi, or equipment status remains unclear: Check provider status and contact the ISP to test the line and equipment provisioning. Google recommends contacting the ISP for persistent problems, while provider tools such as Xfinity’s outage and troubleshooting service may offer further diagnosis or technician scheduling.
- The ISP confirms service is healthy: Contact the equipment maker with the model, firmware, network layout, status lights, and repeatable wired-versus-wireless results.
Do not replace a modem or router on the basis of one symptom. Confirm the diagnosis and check that any replacement is compatible with your service before buying.
