WordPress is not automatically easy to hack, but no website platform is immune to compromise. The risk for a particular site depends on how well its WordPress core, plugins, themes, accounts, hosting environment and recovery process are maintained. Security measures can reduce risk; they cannot eliminate it.
How do WordPress sites get hacked?
Attackers may exploit known weaknesses in outdated WordPress software, plugins, themes or other server software. They may also try to guess passwords, take advantage of weak hosting or target unsafe account and network practices. A managed host can maintain infrastructure, but site owners still have responsibilities for the WordPress application and the extensions they install. WordPress’s hardening guidance describes security as risk reduction, not risk elimination.
WordPress.org says WordPress powers more than 43% of the web; the page does not state the year for that figure. It is a measure of platform prevalence, not the share of WordPress sites that get hacked, and it does not establish the probability that any individual site will be compromised. WordPress.org’s security page does not provide a comparable hack-rate statistic.

Prioritize routine maintenance and access controls before adding extra security layers. WordPress’s official guidance recommends keeping software current, protecting privileged accounts, reducing unnecessary exposure and preparing to restore the site.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
1. Update WordPress, themes and plugins
Install updates for WordPress core, themes and plugins promptly. Choose extensions from trusted sources and favor ones that are actively maintained. Remove plugins and themes you no longer use; unused software can still add exposure. Check that updates are compatible with your site and keep a tested backup process in place.
2. Protect administrator and other privileged accounts
Use a strong, unique password for every privileged account, and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) where supported. WordPress core does not include 2FA, so you will need compatible plugin or identity-provider support. Keep account recovery methods accessible to trusted people.

- HARDWARE 2FA AND MFA: FIDO Alliance Certified FIDO2 v2.1 with CTAP2 plus legacy U2F and CTAP1 for strong two-factor login and passwordless sign-in on services that support security keys
- BUILDING ACCESS ON ONE CARD: MIFARE DESFire EV2 4K applet with AES encryption adds office door and physical access control alongside digital authentication
- CERTIFIED SECURE ELEMENT: An NXP Common Criteria EAL6+ certified secure controller and Java Card platform protects your keys on a tamper-resistant chip
- DUAL INTERFACE SMART CARD: Contactless NFC ISO 14443 plus ISO 7816 contact reader support in an ISO 7810 ID-1 format that is passive and needs no battery
- SWISS ENGINEERED DESIGN: Built by Cryptnox as a single card for authentication and access control and backed by a 2 year warranty
Passkeys using WebAuthn and FIDO2 security keys can provide a phishing-resistant login option when supported by your authentication setup. A physical key alone does not secure a WordPress site: the login system must support it, and other controls still matter. See WordPress’s guidance on brute-force attacks for account protections, passkeys and security keys.

3. Limit access and reduce unnecessary exposure
Give administrator privileges only to people who need them, and use trusted sources for plugins and themes. Where it fits your workflow, consider disabling file editing from the WordPress dashboard. This limits one way of changing site files through the admin interface; it does not replace other security controls.

- Advanced Multi-Factor Authentication - Offers 200 FIDO2 passkey slots and 50 OATH-TOTP slots. Strong, flexible 2FA/MFA support across various apps and authentication platforms.
4. Add filtering where it fits the site
Rate limiting can slow repeated login attempts. A firewall or host-provided filtering may add another layer, depending on how it is configured and what traffic it covers. These controls do not replace software updates or secure accounts. Assess what each service actually protects—account access, traffic, monitoring or another layer—and who is responsible for operating it.
5. Keep backups and test recovery
Maintain backups of both the site’s files and its database, store them safely, and test that they can be restored. A known-good backup can help recovery and reduce downtime, but restoring it does not fix the weakness that allowed an intrusion. Confirm that your recovery plan includes finding and addressing that weakness.

What should I do if my WordPress site was hacked?
Treat a compromise as an incident to contain and investigate, not just a reason to restore a backup. WordPress’s site-hacked recovery guidance recommends limiting access and changes, resetting passwords—especially administrator passwords—and invalidating existing sessions by changing the secret keys in wp-config.php.
- Contain further changes. Restrict access to the site and its administration while you assess the incident.
- Reset credentials. Change passwords for administrator accounts and other affected access points.
- Invalidate active sessions. Change the WordPress secret keys in
wp-config.phpso existing sessions are invalidated. - Investigate the entry point. Identify and remove the weakness that enabled the compromise before considering recovery complete.
- Restore from a known-good backup if needed. Use a backup as part of recovery, then address the original weakness before returning to normal operations.
What security measures matter most?
Match each measure to the layer it covers and the person responsible for it. A host may manage infrastructure or provide filtering, while the site owner still needs to maintain WordPress, extensions and accounts. A backup service addresses recovery rather than preventing an intrusion. No single control makes a site invulnerable, and the official guidance does not establish one universally best security product.
