Yes. Wi‑Fi 5 devices remain usable, and a Wi‑Fi 6 access point can communicate with older 802.11ac clients. That does not tell us how common Wi‑Fi 5 is today, or whether any particular router is still secure: those questions depend on usage data and the support status of the specific product.
What Wi‑Fi 5 means
Wi‑Fi 5 is the consumer name for IEEE 802.11ac. IEEE says the standard was introduced in 2013, with headline capabilities including higher bandwidth, additional channels and improved modulation. Its stated maximum data rate of up to 3.5 Gbit/s describes a standard-era capability, not a speed a user should expect in everyday conditions. IEEE Standards Association’s Wi‑Fi standards overview explains the generation and its introduction.
The IEEE 802.11 Working Group categorizes 802.11ac as “Very High Throughput < 6 GHz.” That describes the amendment’s scope, not a guarantee that every 802.11ac product supports the same features or delivers the same performance. The working group’s project timeline lists that designation.
Will Wi‑Fi 5 devices connect to a Wi‑Fi 6 network?
Generally, yes: the Wireless Broadband Alliance’s 2019 deployment guidance says a Wi‑Fi 6 access point can communicate with 802.11ac clients. In practical terms, you can keep compatible Wi‑Fi 5 phones, computers and other clients on a network using a Wi‑Fi 6 access point. The guidance establishes interoperability, not that an older client gains Wi‑Fi 6 capabilities or will perform like a newer device. Read the Wireless Broadband Alliance deployment guidelines, section 2.4.1, for the compatibility statement.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Does “still used” mean Wi‑Fi 5 is still common?
It means the technology remains usable; it does not establish how prevalent it is. The sources cited here describe standards and compatibility, but do not provide a current percentage of homes or devices using Wi‑Fi 5. A reliable current adoption figure cannot be inferred from a standard’s continued existence or from its ability to connect to newer equipment.
Is a Wi‑Fi 5 router still supported and secure?
That is a product-specific question, separate from whether 802.11ac still works. IEEE lists IEEE 802.11-2024 as an active revision of the broader 802.11 standard family. That status does not certify an individual router or client, establish its firmware-update policy, or mean it receives security fixes.
Rank #2
- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Look up the exact manufacturer and model of your router or client, then check the manufacturer’s support information for firmware updates and security notices. The sources do not establish a universal end-of-support date for Wi‑Fi 5 products, so the generation label alone cannot tell you whether your equipment should be retired.
How to decide whether to upgrade
- Check support first. Confirm whether the manufacturer still provides firmware and security updates for your exact model.
- Identify a concrete need. Consider whether your current network fails to meet your requirements, rather than upgrading solely because Wi‑Fi 6 is newer.
- Check the devices you plan to keep. The cited deployment guidance supports 802.11ac client communication with a Wi‑Fi 6 access point, but verify compatibility for your equipment and setup.
- Choose based on the outcome you need. If supported equipment meets your needs, the evidence here does not imply you must replace it. If it does not, consider a newer access point and confirm that your existing clients can connect.
Wi‑Fi 5 is not automatically obsolete simply because a newer generation exists. Whether to replace a particular device depends on its support status, compatibility and how well it serves your needs.
