VP9 is generally more compression-efficient than H.264 at equivalent quality, but it is not automatically the better choice. If you need broad playback compatibility, H.264/AVC with AAC audio in an MP4 container is a common practical option. If reducing bitrate matters and your target devices support VP9, it may suit your workflow. The right choice depends on playback support, encoding time, source footage, and encoder settings.
Which codec gives better quality at the same bitrate?
MDN characterizes VP9 as offering better compression than H.264 at equivalent quality. That is useful general guidance, not a guarantee that every VP9 encode will look better or produce a smaller file. Results depend on the source video and encoder configuration, among other factors. MDN’s codec-selection guidance describes the qualitative efficiency comparison, while its video codec guide notes that source characteristics and encoding choices affect output size and quality.
There is no verified universal percentage by which VP9 files are smaller than H.264 files. A meaningful comparison needs the same source clip and comparable output quality, with the encoder versions, presets, rate-control settings, resolution, and frame rate documented. Judge quality with an assessment appropriate to your use rather than assuming file size alone tells the whole story.

Choose H.264/AVC when compatibility across a broad range of browsers, operating systems, devices, or playback applications is the priority. MDN gives H.264/AVC video with AAC audio in an MP4 container as a common practical combination for broad compatibility. That is a general starting point, not a promise of support in every environment; verify the actual devices and software you need to serve. MDN’s web video codec guide discusses this combination.

When is VP9 worth considering?
VP9 can be a good fit when bitrate efficiency is important and the playback environment supports it. Google describes VP9 as a format developed by the WebM Project for web and mobile uses, and notes support for 10- and 12-bit encoding and HDR. Those stated capabilities do not mean that every device, browser, or player supports every VP9 profile or feature. Check the precise playback path you plan to use. Google’s VP9 overview provides the format information.
What trade-offs affect a VP9 encode?
Encoding time and compute
Compression efficiency is only one part of the cost. Google’s VP9 documentation puts the trade-off plainly: “Compressing video is a trade-off between the quality of the output, and the amount of time it takes to create it.” Quality and speed settings, as well as threading, affect that balance. A slower encode may be acceptable for files prepared in advance; a time-sensitive workflow may value throughput more. The outcome depends on the encoder and settings used. Google’s VP9 basics guide explains the quality-versus-time trade-off.

Delivery mode and bitrate control
Google’s VP9 bitrate guidance recommends variable bitrate (VBR) for on-demand video and high-motion material, and constant bitrate (CBR) for live streaming. These are recommendations for the VP9 encoding context described in the guide, not proof that one mode makes VP9 universally superior to H.264. Confirm the settings against the encoder version and delivery system you use. Google’s VP9 bitrate modes guide outlines the use cases.

How to make a fair codec comparison
- Use identical source footage. Motion, detail, noise, and other characteristics can change how much compression is practical.
- Match the output requirements. Keep resolution and frame rate the same, and compare encodes at a similar perceived or measured quality.
- Record the encoding setup. Note the encoder and version, preset, rate-control mode, and quality settings for each file.
- Compare both quality and cost. Check visual quality and output bitrate or file size, then account for encoding time and the playback support you need.
- Test the intended playback environment. Confirm that the actual browsers, devices, operating systems, and applications can play the encoded video as expected.
Because content and encoder configuration influence the result, a comparison on one clip should not be treated as a universal ranking for all video. MDN discusses these dependencies in its video codec guide.

How should you choose?
- Prioritize broad compatibility: Start with H.264/AVC video, AAC audio, and MP4, then test the audience’s target environments.
- Prioritize bitrate efficiency: Consider VP9 if its playback support is adequate and you can tune the encoding workflow for your quality and speed needs.
- Need both: Depending on your delivery system and audience, providing more than one encoding may be an option, but the appropriate setup depends on your playback targets and infrastructure.
Google also publishes VP9 encoding settings guidance. Treat recommended settings as a starting point for the applicable encoder and workflow, then validate them with representative footage and the devices you intend to support.
