Vaultbreakers has a free demo on Steam, but the full game is not confirmed as free to play. BetaDwarf’s current FAQ says the game is planned as a premium, paid release at launch, while also warning that this plan can change before release. The complete game is not available to buy yet, and Steam lists its release date as “To be announced.”
That makes the practical answer straightforward: you can try part of Vaultbreakers for free today, but you should not assume the eventual full game will be free, that a final price has been set, or that demo progress will transfer.
What you can play for free right now
The free product currently available is a Steam demo, not the finished game. The demo is available for everyone to download through the Vaultbreakers Steam listing. You do not need to wait for a purchase option for the full release because that option does not exist yet.

Calling it a demo matters because its content and progression are deliberately limited. It is intended to let players experience the opening structure, try the core play loop, and decide whether to follow development. It is not evidence that the completed game will use a free-to-play business model.

This is enough material to learn how the game introduces its world and progression systems, but it is only a portion of the planned experience. The listing does not describe the demo as the full Wolfswood map or as a complete representation of every class, region, quest type, or endgame system.
What “free” means in this case
A free demo has no purchase price for the demo itself. It does not establish that the finished game will have no upfront cost, no optional purchases, or no change in business model. BetaDwarf’s FAQ uses more specific wording: the game is currently planned to be premium at launch, but that decision is not final and may change before release.
“Premium” normally means an upfront purchase for the full product rather than permanent access without buying it. However, the developer has not published a final price, so it would be inaccurate to quote a number or imply that a particular edition, subscription, or launch discount is confirmed.

Steam’s main-game page may display a “Free To Play” genre tag. That tag conflicts with the developer’s more direct FAQ answer about launch plans. For a pricing decision, treat the FAQ as the clearer statement and regard the Steam tag as insufficient evidence of a settled free-to-play model. The plan can still change, but there is no confirmed free-to-play commitment to rely on.

The table separates facts about the playable demo from plans for the unreleased product. In particular, the broader game description should not be read as a promise that every advertised mode is present in the demo or guaranteed at launch.
Which game modes are actually in the demo?
The currently listed demo is PvE-only, meaning your group fights the game’s environments and enemies rather than competing directly against another player team. Its co-op supports you and up to two friends, making it suitable for a small party while you learn the opening missions.
The store page describes Vaultbreakers more broadly as offering PvE or PvPvE adventures. PvPvE combines player competition with environmental threats, but it is not part of the currently listed demo. Do not download the demo expecting access to a competitive extraction or mixed player-versus-player environment.

About the advertised Alpha test
The Steam page has also advertised a time-limited Alpha test. The listed window was October 15–22, 2026, but that date range is volatile and may have ended by the time you read this. Check the current official Steam listing for any active test notice rather than assuming the Alpha remains open. An Alpha invitation or test window is separate from the always-available demo and should not be treated as the final release.

How to download and start the demo
- Open Steam and search for the official Vaultbreakers store page.
- Confirm that you are viewing the demo entry or the page’s demo download option, not a nonexistent purchase listing for the unreleased full game.
- Select the option to download or install the demo and choose a Steam library location.
- Launch the demo from your Steam library after installation.
- Complete the onboarding sequence before judging the game. The demo’s quests are designed to lead you through the early systems and toward the first Vaultbreak.
- If you want to play cooperatively, invite up to two friends through Steam’s available session or invite controls. The exact button labels can change with Steam updates, but the demo’s stated party limit remains up to two friends.
The official listings do not publish a minimum PC specification in the information covered here. Check the live Steam system-requirements panel before installing on a particular computer. Do not infer hardware requirements from the demo’s free price or from the fact that the developer is targeting multiple platforms.
What carries over when the demo ends?
The demo listing identifies one specific carryover: Legacy Points can unlock permanent rewards that will be available after launch. That is the only persistence exception explicitly described.
Other demo progress will not carry over and may be reset before the full game launches. You should therefore assume that ordinary character advancement, quest completion, equipment, haven upgrades, and similar in-demo progress are for testing and learning unless the game labels them as Legacy Point rewards. The listing does not promise that a character, inventory, quest state, or build will survive into the release.

- Use the opening quests to learn combat, movement, objectives, and the haven rather than grinding solely for a launch advantage.
- Record or remember which rewards are connected to Legacy Points if permanent unlocks matter to you.
- Expect a reset and avoid spending money or making purchase decisions based on the assumption that your current build will remain intact.
- Recheck the official announcement and store text near launch for any updated carryover rules.
When is Vaultbreakers coming out?
BetaDwarf’s FAQ targets a 2027 release and says development is focused on PC and consoles. Steam currently gives no exact date and displays “To be announced.” These statements can both be true: 2027 is a development target, while the launch day remains uncommitted.

No confirmed console lineup is provided in the available official information. “PC and consoles” does not identify particular console families, performance modes, cross-play support, or save synchronization. Those details should be treated as unanswered until the developer publishes them.
There is also no confirmed launch price. The current premium plan tells you the intended direction, not the amount you will pay or whether editions, regional pricing, early-access terms, or discounts will exist.
Should you try the demo now?
The demo is useful if you want to
- Evaluate the opening combat and mission flow without paying for the unreleased game.
- See whether the two available Vaultbreakers suit your preferred play style.
- Explore the first portion of Wolfswood and the upgradable haven.
- Play the introductory content with up to two friends.
- Decide whether the planned premium release is worth following before a price is announced.
Keep your expectations limited if you need
- The complete map and quest catalog.
- PvPvE or other competitive modes right now.
- A guaranteed permanent character or item progression path.
- Final performance information or published PC requirements.
- A confirmed launch date, console list, or price.
The demo is best viewed as a hands-on sample and an opportunity to provide feedback, not as a promise of free permanent access to the finished game.

- Business model: Confirm whether the premium plan remains in place or has changed to another model.
- Price and editions: Look for the actual regional price and any differences between editions.
- Release date: Replace the broad 2027 target with the exact date only after Steam or the developer announces one.
- Platforms: Verify which specific consoles are supported and whether PC and console versions launch together.
- Modes: Check which PvE and PvPvE features are available at launch rather than relying on the broad store description.
- Progress policy: Confirm whether any Legacy Point rewards or other demo achievements are still honored.
- Technical requirements: Read the final PC specifications and controller, storage, and network information when published.
This checklist protects you from treating an early access sample, a temporary Alpha, or an announced intention as a final product specification.
Why the answer may change
Vaultbreakers is still in development, and the developer explicitly says the premium launch plan is subject to change. Release timing, platforms, content, and progression policies can likewise be revised before launch. The safest wording is therefore time-specific: the demo is free now; the full game is currently planned as a paid premium release; and the final policy has not been locked.
If you are deciding whether to install, the free demo removes the purchase risk for the sample itself. If you are budgeting for the full game, keep the purchase price and release date open until an official announcement fills those gaps.
Bottom line for new players
Download the Steam demo if you want to test Vaultbreakers’ opening PvE experience and small-group co-op. It includes two Vaultbreakers, part of Wolfswood, the haven and perks, and quests through the first Vaultbreak. Legacy Points are the stated permanent-reward exception, while other demo progress may be reset. The full game is not yet for sale, has no announced price or exact date, and is currently planned as a premium release rather than a confirmed free-to-play game.
