Vaultbreakers has a free Steam demo, but the complete game is not currently free-to-play. BetaDwarf says the full release is planned as a premium game at launch, although that plan can still change. The full game is not yet available on Steam, and no final price has been announced in the official information currently available.
What “free” means for Vaultbreakers
There are two different products to distinguish: the downloadable demo that is available now and the full Vaultbreakers release that BetaDwarf is still developing.
The demo is free to download
The Steam demo is listed as free. You can install it without buying the unreleased full game. It is a limited introduction rather than an early version of every feature, map and mode planned for launch.

BetaDwarf’s official FAQ answers “Will the game be free to play?” by saying that Vaultbreakers is currently planned to be premium at launch. The developer also says the plan is not final and could change before release. “Premium” indicates a paid game rather than a free-to-play release, but the sources do not state the eventual purchase price, editions, or launch monetization details.

Because the full game is not yet sold on Steam, there is no current full-game price to compare with the free demo. Treat any unofficial price claims as speculation until BetaDwarf publishes launch terms.
What is included in the free demo?
The demo is designed to show the opening structure of Vaultbreakers while keeping its scope deliberately limited.
Two playable Vaultbreakers
The current demo includes two playable Vaultbreakers. This gives you a chance to learn the game through more than one character, but it does not represent the complete launch roster.

You can explore a portion of the Wolfswood map. The available area is only one slice of the eventual game world, so reaching the end of the demo does not mean you have seen all environments or progression tiers.

Onboarding and early main quests
The demo contains onboarding and main quests through the first Vaultbreak. These missions establish the basic loop and take you through the opening story and objectives. Later quests and destinations are outside the demo’s scope.
An upgradable Haven and perks
Your demo session includes an upgradable Haven and access to perks. These systems let you experience the game’s base-development and character-building ideas instead of playing a purely scripted tutorial.
Co-op for up to three players
You can play cooperatively with up to two friends, for a maximum party of three. The official description does not promise a larger party size for the demo.
The current demo is PvE only
The demo is currently player-versus-environment (PvE). You fight computer-controlled threats and complete objectives with your group. It should not be treated as a preview of the complete competitive or mixed-mode experience: a separate Alpha Test is intended to let players try PvPvE content.

Does demo progress carry over to the full game?
Only a specific progression currency called Legacy Points is described as carrying over. Ordinary demo progress is not preserved for release.
What Legacy Points do
BetaDwarf’s announcement and the Steam demo description say Legacy Points unlock rewards described as permanent after launch. The official material does not list every reward or explain how many points particular rewards will require. Consider them a limited long-term recognition system rather than a promise that your entire demo account will become a finished launch character.
What will not carry over
The Steam demo listing states that progress “except Legacy Points” will not carry over from the demo to the game release. It also warns that demo progress might be reset before the full launch. That means you should not expect character levels, equipment, quest completion, Haven upgrades, perks, map state or other ordinary run progress to transfer.

The practical result is simple: play the demo to learn the systems and earn Legacy Points, not to build a launch-ready character. Even Legacy Point rewards should be viewed in the context of a changing test build; BetaDwarf can revise the game before release.

When will the full game release?
There is no confirmed release date in the cited official store information. BetaDwarf’s FAQ gives a target of 2027 and says the team is focusing on PC and consoles. Steam still marks the date as “To be announced,” so 2027 is a development target, not a guarantee.
The phrase “PC and consoles” also does not identify particular console systems. Do not assume a PlayStation, Xbox or Switch version until BetaDwarf names the platforms and provides store pages for them.

The Alpha Test is a separate testing event, not the same product as the free demo. Its purpose includes testing PvPvE, whereas the current demo is PvE only.
Official dates currently conflict. A developer announcement dated October 8 says the test runs from October 15 at 10:00 CEST through October 21 at 23:59 CEST. The main Steam listing says October 15 through October 22. Because both dates appear in official material and test schedules can change, check the current Steam listing or BetaDwarf announcement immediately before trying to join. Do not treat either end date as permanently settled.

The Alpha Test should also not be used to infer launch pricing or final progression. Test access and test progress are separate from the commercial release, and the developer can change or wipe test content.
How to try the free demo on Steam
- Open the Steam store and search for the official Vaultbreakers demo listing.
- Confirm that you are selecting the demo rather than a future full-game listing. The demo is labeled free to download.
- Select the option to install or download the demo, then choose the Steam library location where you want it installed.
- Launch the demo from your library and complete its onboarding sequence before attempting the main quests.
- If you want to play co-op, invite up to two friends through Steam. The demo supports a maximum of three players in one group.
- Keep expectations centered on the published scope: two Vaultbreakers, part of Wolfswood, the early quests, Haven upgrades and perks, and PvE encounters.
The cited official pages do not publish final hardware requirements, regional restrictions or a guaranteed demo availability period. If the listing disappears or access changes, rely on the current Steam page and BetaDwarf announcements rather than an old guide.
How to decide whether the demo is worth playing
Play it if you want to test the core loop
- You want to see how the first Vaultbreakers handle before paying for a future premium release.
- You enjoy cooperative PvE and have one or two friends available.
- You want to explore the opening Wolfswood area, first Vaultbreak and Haven upgrades.
- You are comfortable with a preview build whose balance, content and progression may change.
Set expectations if you want the whole game
- The demo is not the complete map, roster or quest line.
- It does not currently provide PvPvE; that is associated with the separate Alpha Test.
- Most progress is temporary, so replaying after a reset is possible.
- The full-game price, exact launch date, final console platforms and complete feature list are not confirmed.
Bottom line on Vaultbreakers pricing and progression
Vaultbreakers is free to try through its Steam demo, not confirmed as a free-to-play full release. BetaDwarf currently plans a premium launch, with the price still undisclosed and the release date still unannounced beyond a 2027 target. The demo offers a compact PvE slice with two Vaultbreakers, early Wolfswood content, Haven and perk progression, and three-player co-op. Only Legacy Points are intended to survive into permanent rewards; ordinary demo progress will not carry over and may be reset.
