Valor Mortis is worth buying at its reported $40 launch price only if you specifically want first-person parry combat, a grim alternate-Napoleonic setting, and high-speed movement between fights. Early reviews describe a fresh, satisfying core idea, but also uneven difficulty and encounters that can feel awkward from a first-person camera. Players who demand consistently clear enemy telegraphs and carefully tuned bosses should wait for patches or a discount; players willing to learn an idiosyncratic combat system may find its combination of melee, supernatural powers, and movement unlike other Soulslikes.

What Valor Mortis is

Valor Mortis is a first-person action Soulslike from One More Level, the studio behind Ghostrunner. You play William, a former soldier of Napoleon’s Grande Armée who rises from death during a mysterious plague. The campaign follows his attempt to survive a war-torn alternate history, fight monsters, and uncover the threat spreading through humanity.

The official Steam listing gives October 13, 2026 as the release date and describes gameplay as focused on combat in a brutal wartorn landscape. PlayStation lists a single-player, offline PS5 edition with DualSense vibration and adaptive-trigger effects, plus PS5 Pro enhancement. The PlayStation page also carries ratings information for blood and gore, intense violence, and strong language.

Launch timing differed by storefront. PlayStation listed the PS5 release for October 13 at 17:00 UTC, so a store page showing the game before that time did not necessarily mean the console version was already downloadable in every region. Regional prices, taxes, editions, and later discounts can also differ from the figures reported at launch.

The short buying decision

Buy now if… Wait if…
You want a first-person melee game built around parrying rather than another third-person Soulslike. You need consistently generous reaction windows and highly predictable enemy spacing.
The Napoleonic horror setting and supernatural abilities matter more to you than genre polish. First-person close-quarters cameras have frustrated you in other action games.
A reported $40 launch price fits your budget and you accept some balance risk. You prefer to see post-launch patches address difficulty, hitboxes, and encounter readability first.
You enjoy learning through repeated attempts and can tolerate occasional trial-and-error encounters. You are buying primarily for a smooth, benchmarked PC experience rather than the design concept.

This is an audience-split recommendation, not a universal score. Launch reviews from TechRadar and Game Informer agree that the central combat idea is compelling while disagreeing, in effect, about how often the execution gets in its own way. No aggregate player rating or representative benchmark was established in the available launch information.

How combat works

First-person melee and parries

Combat is viewed through the protagonist’s eyes. Your main tools are close-range weapons, timed parries, ranged weapons, and supernatural powers. The design asks you to read an incoming attack, meet it with a correctly timed defensive action, and convert that opening into damage. This makes timing and positioning more important than simply holding a block or circling an enemy.

TechRadar reviewer James Pickard called the parry-focused combat snappy and satisfying. That assessment reflects one reviewer’s experience, but it identifies the game’s clearest mechanical hook: the first-person perspective is not merely a camera change, it is tied to a deliberate emphasis on reaction timing and aggressive counterattacks.

Soulslike progression loop

Game Informer describes a familiar structure for the genre. Challenging enemies and bosses guard routes and arenas; dying costs your primary currency; returning to the death location gives you a chance to recover it; and rest points reset defeated enemies. The loop rewards studying an encounter, spending currency before a risky attempt, and deciding when to push forward or return to safety.

That structure also means early mistakes can compound. Losing currency while still learning parry timing may leave you under-upgraded, while repeatedly retrieving it can tempt you into a fight before you understand the enemy. Upgrades to health, stamina, and weapons become especially important because they can change how much room you have to survive an error.

Ranged weapons and powers

Firearms and supernatural abilities supplement, rather than replace, melee. They give you options when an enemy is difficult to approach or when several threats occupy an arena. The available material does not establish a complete list of powers, ammunition economies, or build paths, so treat broad claims about optimal loadouts with caution. The confirmed point is that Valor Mortis is not a sword-only game: its combat asks you to combine parries with ranged and supernatural tools.

Movement and environmental traversal

One More Level’s movement expertise is visible outside combat. Game Informer highlights wall-running, grappling, swinging, and platform jumps that break up slower, focused fights. These sequences create short bursts of speed and can make navigation feel closer to a movement-action game than a traditional Soulslike.

The contrast is intentional but divisive. Traversal gives the campaign a distinctive rhythm: concentrate on an enemy’s wind-up, then move rapidly through an obstacle course or vertical route. It also introduces another source of failure. Missing a jump or misjudging a grapple can interrupt exploration even when your combat fundamentals are sound. The developer said it worked on the balance between platforming and combat after demo feedback, but that statement is a development claim, not independent proof that every transition is smooth in the launch build.

How difficult is Valor Mortis?

Why the opening can feel unfair

Game Informer’s Wesley LeBlanc reported that early difficulty sometimes left too little room to learn and react. In a first-person game, an enemy that is merely fast in a third-person view can become hard to read when its attack begins outside your camera’s central field. Tight timing, limited spacing, and several simultaneous threats can therefore feel like a perception problem rather than a test of deliberate execution.

That criticism concerns the learning curve, not the existence of challenge. The same review says the difficulty became more satisfying later, when the player had improved equipment and a better understanding of the systems. The distinction matters: a demanding game can be fair once its rules are taught, while an encounter that kills before those rules are legible feels arbitrary.

The General Lothaire adjustment

One More Level said its demo placed General Lothaire too early. In the full game, the boss was intended to appear at the end of Chapter II, after players had more time to learn the mechanics and level up. Moving a boss later is evidence that the studio recognized a progression problem; it is not evidence that every launch encounter has ideal tuning.

What changed after the demo

The developer’s announcement says feedback led to work on combat readability, hitbox range, staggering, boss variety, the difficulty curve, performance optimization, and the balance between platforming and combat. It also states that the demo was no longer representative of the quality and polish planned for the full release. Pre-release complaints should therefore be treated as historical context, while launch reviews are more relevant to a purchase decision. Even launch reviews remain snapshots that can be overtaken by patches.

Reported strengths and flaws

Strengths reviewers identified

  • A distinctive premise: First-person parrying, supernatural powers, and an alternate Napoleonic plague setting give the game a clear identity.
  • Responsive-feeling parries: TechRadar described the combat as snappy and satisfying when the timing and encounter design cooperate.
  • Atmosphere: TechRadar praised the mood, while Game Informer found the world promising.
  • Varied pacing: Wall-running, grappling, swinging, and jumps provide movement-focused interludes instead of continuous arena fights.
  • A stronger later challenge: Game Informer found that the game settled into a more compelling “one more try” pattern after the uneven opening.

Flaws reviewers identified

  • First-person encounter friction: TechRadar said the viewpoint can make some fights clunky or irritating, particularly when positioning and enemy attacks become difficult to parse.
  • Trick-heavy design: Pickard criticized what he called an “obsession with trickery,” an attributed judgment suggesting that some danger comes from surprise or misdirection rather than readable attack patterns.
  • Uneven balance: Game Informer said balance issues mar the action and that early difficulty can cross into unfairness.
  • Uncertain long-term tuning: The developer listed hitboxes, staggering, boss difficulty, and readability among its areas of work, so launch buyers should not assume all concerns are permanently resolved.

These are reviewer judgments, not universal defects measured across every player or hardware configuration. Your tolerance for camera friction and surprise attacks is likely to determine whether the same encounter feels inventive or irritating.

PC performance and system requirements

The official Steam listing specifies the following requirements for both its minimum and recommended sections:

Requirement Steam listing Qualification
Memory 16 GB RAM The same 16 GB figure appears in minimum and recommended requirements.
Storage 50 GB The same 50 GB figure appears in both sections; allow additional space for patches and operating-system overhead.
Graphics API DirectX 12 Steam lists DirectX 12; additional hardware details were marked as not yet provided.
Additional notes Not stated The storefront says further notes are not yet provided, so it is not a complete compatibility guarantee.

TechRadar reviewer James Pickard reported more than 100 frames per second at 1440p on High settings with frame generation, almost all the time. That is a single reviewer’s result on specific hardware and settings, not a representative benchmark. Do not use it to predict performance on your own PC, especially if you cannot enable frame generation or are targeting a different resolution.

For a safer PC purchase, compare your graphics card and processor with later, configuration-specific testing, and keep enough free storage for updates. The listed 16 GB of RAM and 50 GB of disk space are starting points, not proof that every system meeting them will deliver a stable frame rate.

Platforms and edition details

Steam on PC

Steam lists the October 13, 2026 release date, one installation size requirement of 50 GB, 16 GB RAM in both requirement tiers, and DirectX 12. The accessed listing showed no user reviews, so there was no established player-consensus score to cite at launch.

PlayStation 5

The PS5 edition supports one-player offline play, DualSense vibration, trigger effects, and PS5 Pro enhancement. The listed content descriptors are Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, and Strong Language. PlayStation’s launch time was 17:00 UTC on October 13; check your regional store for current availability, price, download size, and any edition differences.

Physical copies

Developer material said the physical-disc version was ready for printing, and the PlayStation listing confirms a PS5 edition. That does not establish a retailer’s stock, SKU, shipping date, or regional availability. Verify those details directly before ordering a disc.

Price and when to buy

GamesRadar reported a $40 launch price in September 2026 and quoted Lyrical Games boss Blake Rochkind saying the company chose the figure after weighing a crowded release window and a price players could take on alongside larger releases. The reported amount is a launch reference, not a promise of the current price in your region. Currency conversion, taxes, promotions, platform fees, and later discounts can change what you pay.

At $40, the game’s risk is easier to justify for players who value novelty. You are paying for a specific combination of first-person melee, parries, movement, and setting rather than for a proven, universally polished Soulslike formula. If you are unsure, waiting for a patch cycle or a sale lets you see whether hitbox, readability, and difficulty concerns improve while lowering the cost of experimentation.

How to compare it with alternatives

Do not compare Valor Mortis only by asking whether another game is “hard.” Use the following axes:

  1. Combat feel: Is the alternative built around parry timing, blocking, dodging, ranged attacks, or a mixture? The timing window and recovery animation matter more than a genre label.
  2. Teaching and fairness: Check how quickly it introduces enemy tells, how much damage early mistakes cause, and whether bosses arrive after the game has taught the required mechanics.
  3. Enemy readability: First-person games can hide attacks outside the center of the view. Look for testing that discusses spacing, camera behavior, and telegraphs rather than only difficulty adjectives.
  4. Traversal balance: Decide whether you want wall-running, grappling, and platforming between fights or prefer a game focused almost entirely on combat and exploration.
  5. Platform fit: Confirm PC requirements, DirectX support, PS5-only availability, DualSense features, and PS5 Pro enhancements against your hardware.
  6. Current value: Compare the live regional price and edition, not the reported $40 launch figure, and account for whether patches have addressed the problems that matter to you.

This framework prevents a misleading conclusion based solely on the word “Soulslike.” Two games can share death-and-recovery progression while feeling completely different in camera, reaction timing, and encounter design.

A practical launch-buying checklist

  1. Read the current Steam or PlayStation listing for your region and confirm the live price, release status, edition, and available platform.
  2. On PC, compare your hardware with the listed 16 GB RAM, 50 GB storage, and DirectX 12 requirements, then look for testing using your resolution and whether frame generation is available.
  3. Watch or read launch-build coverage that specifically discusses first-person enemy readability, parry timing, and boss spacing.
  4. Decide how much uncertainty you can accept: the developer reported tuning work, but reviewers still identified uneven difficulty and awkward encounters.
  5. If you buy digitally, check the platform’s refund policy before starting; if you buy physically, confirm retailer stock and region compatibility.
  6. For the PS5 version, confirm that offline single-player play and DualSense effects match your expectations, and verify whether your console is a PS5 Pro if you are relying on the enhancement label.

Final verdict

Valor Mortis is a promising but uneven launch for a specific audience. Its first-person parry combat, supernatural arsenal, movement set pieces, and Napoleonic horror atmosphere are substantial reasons to play. The reported flaws are equally specific: early encounters may be too punishing to teach their rules comfortably, the first-person view can make close fights clumsy, and trick-heavy design may frustrate players who want transparent telegraphs.

Buy at the reported $40 level if those distinctive strengths are your priority and you are comfortable learning through difficult attempts. Wait for patches or a lower price if fairness, camera clarity, and consistently polished encounters matter more than novelty. That conditional answer is more accurate than calling the game simply good or bad.
