Yes. Valor Mortis is a first-person action Soulslike, according to its developer and official storefront. It uses familiar genre elements—stamina-managed fights, demanding bosses, death-related resource recovery, checkpoints, and exploration—while presenting combat from an unusual first-person viewpoint. That changes how players judge distance, track attacks, and read the battlefield; it does not, by itself, make the game a different genre.
Why Valor Mortis qualifies as a Soulslike
Valor Mortis’s Soulslike label is supported by the systems its developer describes, not just by a storefront category. The studio has pointed to recovering resources after death, lighting checkpoints, challenging bosses, and backtracking through maps to find secrets. Those conventions give the game a recognizable Soulslike progression and exploration loop.
The setting and viewpoint are distinctive, but the underlying structure is familiar: explore, fight carefully, reach checkpoints, improve your character, and take on difficult encounters. The developer has described the game as a first-person action Soulslike, and the official Steam listing uses that classification as well. Steam’s Valor Mortis listing identifies its genre and platform details.
How combat works
Combat combines stamina management with light and heavy melee attacks, parries, counterattacks, firearms, and supernatural abilities called Transmutations. The mix gives players options at different ranges, but the announced design still centers on reading an opponent and choosing when to attack or defend rather than attacking without regard for timing.

- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Timing and defense
Stamina is a resource to manage during a fight. Light and heavy attacks provide different offensive choices, while parries and counterattacks give players defensive and retaliatory tools. The developer’s announcements describe demanding boss fights, where recognizing an opening and responding deliberately are central to the intended challenge.
Melee, firearms, and Transmutations
Unlike a melee-only presentation, Valor Mortis also includes firearms and supernatural Transmutations. These add ranged and ability-based options alongside close-quarters weapons. The available announcements establish that these systems are part of combat, but do not provide enough detail to compare exact damage, weapon statistics, or the balance between them.

What the first-person view changes
Most Soulslikes present combat from a third-person camera. Valor Mortis instead places the player in first person, which makes spatial awareness a central design challenge: judging an enemy’s distance, seeing an attack’s full motion, and understanding depth can be harder when the camera is close to the action. One More Level brand manager Michał Azarewicz told VGTimes that the main difference is playing in first person rather than third person, as in most Soulslikes. VGTimes’ gamescom 2026 interview discusses that design choice.

It also acknowledged demo feedback concerning combat readability, hitbox range, enemy staggering, boss difficulty, performance, and the balance between platforming and combat, and said it made improvements. Those are developer-reported design updates, not independent findings about the final release. The studio cautioned that the demo did not represent the full game’s intended launch polish. How it compares with other action RPGs
“Action RPG” covers games with very different combat systems, so there is no single template that Valor Mortis either follows or departs from. A useful comparison is to look at the specific features that shape moment-to-moment play and progression.
| Comparison point | Valor Mortis | What that means for the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Viewpoint and spatial readability | First person; the developer has discussed field of view and depth perception as design challenges. | Its presentation differs from the third-person viewpoint common in Soulslikes. Players must read attacks and distance through a closer camera perspective. |
| Timing and defense | Stamina management, light and heavy attacks, parries, and counterattacks. | These are recognizable deliberate-combat tools, rather than evidence of a purely fast, uninterrupted attack system. |
| Combat range and options | Melee weapons, firearms, and supernatural Transmutations. | It combines close-range fighting with ranged and ability-based options; detailed weapon balance is not established in the announcements. |
| Death and checkpoints | Catalysts are spent at Lanterns and dropped where William dies, according to the publisher. | Resource recovery and checkpoint upgrades connect combat risk to progression in a familiar Soulslike way. |
| Exploration and bosses | The developer describes challenging bosses and map backtracking to find secrets. | Exploration and difficult encounters reinforce the Soulslike classification beyond the camera perspective. |
The table describes announced systems, not a hands-on comparison or a judgment about final combat quality. It is most accurate to call Valor Mortis a Soulslike with an unusual first-person presentation, rather than to treat first person as proof that it abandons the genre’s conventions.

Lanterns, Catalysts, and progression
Lanterns serve as checkpoints and places to upgrade and customize a build. The publisher says players spend Catalysts at Lanterns, and that Catalysts are dropped at the location where William dies. This makes death part of the progression loop: a player risks a carried resource in an encounter, then has a reason to return to the death location. The PlayStation Store listing describes the announced platform release and game features.
Release status and what remains unverified
As of October 11, 2026, One More Level had scheduled Valor Mortis to launch on October 13, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. That was an announced future release at the time of the source material, not confirmation that the launch had happened. The Steam announcement estimates a 20-hour story; this is the developer’s estimate, not an independently measured completion time. One More Level’s Steam announcement gives the story estimate and launch details.
