Yes—if you treat ADB as privileged administration access on a trusted private network. Home Assistant’s official Android Debug Bridge integration can control an Amazon Fire TV Stick locally, without exposing the device to a cloud service. The important safeguards are network isolation, the Fire TV’s host-approval prompt, and disabling ADB debugging when you no longer need it. ADB is not an ordinary media-control protocol: an approved host can send debugging commands, so an exposed or untrusted network changes the risk substantially.
What “safe” means in this setup
There is no authoritative probability or incident-rate figure for attacks against a Home Assistant-to-Fire-TV ADB connection. The primary Android guidance is qualitative: ADB is intended for a controlled, secure environment, and listening network sockets can give remote attackers an entry point. Therefore, safety depends less on Home Assistant’s normal local command flow and more on who can reach the Fire TV’s ADB listener and which computer you authorize.

- The Fire TV has ADB Debugging enabled and is addressed by its local IP address.
- You approve the RSA-style authorization prompt only for the Home Assistant host.
- Your router does not forward TCP port 5555 (or another ADB port) from the internet.
- ADB is turned off when remote control is no longer required.
Under those conditions, ADB is a reasonable local-control method. Leaving it enabled on a flat, untrusted, or internet-reachable network is a different security decision.

How Home Assistant and Fire TV use ADB
Home Assistant’s official Android Debug Bridge integration supports Android devices and Amazon Fire TV devices. Its setup requires enabling ADB Debugging on the Fire TV and entering the device’s local IP address. To find that address on the Fire TV, open Settings > My Fire TV > About > Network.
The integration recommends Home Assistant’s built-in Python ADB implementation as the default. An external ADB server is suggested only when you encounter stability problems. Choosing the built-in implementation does not remove the need to secure the network; both approaches still depend on the Fire TV’s ADB service and its host authorization.
At the protocol level, Fire TV’s developer documentation describes ADB as a developer and debugging interface. A typical connection uses the device address and port, for example:
adb connect <ip>:5555The exact address is the one shown in the Fire TV network screen. Do not substitute a public address or create an internet port-forward merely to make the connection work.

Why ADB is more sensitive than a normal remote-control command
ADB was designed to let a development computer diagnose and control an Android-based device. That scope is broader than sending play, pause, or volume events. An authorized ADB host can issue debugging commands, inspect device state, and interact with the operating system in ways that a narrow media-control API generally cannot.
Android’s security model requires an RSA-key approval dialog before a device accepts debugging commands from a new host. The dialog is a meaningful trust boundary: it prevents commands from being run until someone unlocks or acknowledges the device. Fire TV shows a corresponding approval prompt when Home Assistant first connects. Select the option to always allow only when you have verified that the connecting computer is your own Home Assistant instance.
Approval is not a substitute for network security. Once a host is trusted, an attacker who gains access to that host, obtains its ADB keys, or reaches an inadequately protected ADB service may have the same privileged channel. Keep the trust list and the network boundary under your control.
Secure setup: a step-by-step procedure
1. Put both devices on a network you control
- Connect Home Assistant and the Fire TV Stick to your private home LAN or to an IoT network whose firewall rules you manage.
- Avoid guest Wi-Fi for either device when guest clients are allowed to discover or reach one another. Guest isolation can also prevent Home Assistant from reaching the Fire TV, so verify the intended routing rather than assuming it.
- Do not place the Fire TV on a network where visitors, tenants, or unknown IoT equipment can initiate connections to it.
A separate IoT VLAN can reduce reachability, but it must allow the specific Home Assistant-to-Fire-TV traffic you intend to use. This is a network-hardening measure inferred from Android’s controlled-environment guidance; it is not a requirement in every household.

2. Find and reserve the Fire TV’s local address
- On the Fire TV, open Settings > My Fire TV > About > Network.
- Record the displayed IP address for the Home Assistant integration.
- If your router supports DHCP reservations, reserve that address for the Fire TV so a lease change does not look like a failed ADB connection. A reservation improves reliability; it does not make an exposed ADB port safe.
3. Enable ADB only while you are configuring it
Use the Fire TV’s developer settings to turn on ADB Debugging. Amazon’s developer documentation treats this as a development control, not a general-use feature. If you are not actively pairing or troubleshooting, leave it disabled. Menu names can vary by Fire OS generation, so check the labels on the exact model and software build.
4. Add the device in Home Assistant
- Open Home Assistant’s integration setup and choose the official Android Debug Bridge integration.
- Enter the Fire TV’s local IP address when prompted.
- Use the built-in Python ADB implementation first. Consider an ADB server only if the built-in option has a reproducible stability problem.
- Watch the Fire TV screen during the first connection. Confirm that the requesting host is your Home Assistant system, then approve the RSA authorization prompt. Use “always allow” only for that known host.
If no prompt appears, do not work around the security check by exposing the device broadly. First confirm the address, that ADB Debugging is enabled, and that your router or VLAN allows the intended local connection.
5. Verify control with the smallest necessary action
Test a basic operation such as waking the display or sending a media command from Home Assistant. Confirm that the device responds and that no other client is listed or requesting authorization. A successful test proves connectivity, not that the surrounding network is trusted; keep the firewall and segmentation rules in place.

These controls address different failure modes. A firewall cannot fix an already-trusted compromised Home Assistant host, and an approval dialog cannot protect a device whose ADB port is reachable by hostile clients after authorization. Use both layers.

What to do when you replace Home Assistant or the router
Replacing or reinstalling the Home Assistant host
A new installation may generate a different ADB key. Treat it as a new computer: verify the prompt, approve the new host deliberately, and revoke the old authorization if the previous installation will not be used again. Do not leave multiple historical hosts authorized simply because they once belonged to you.
Changing networks or subnets
After a router replacement, VLAN change, or Wi-Fi migration, confirm that the Fire TV’s address is still correct and that only the intended Home Assistant host can reach it. If the Fire TV has moved to a less-trusted network, disable ADB until you have recreated appropriate firewall rules.
Updating software
Keep Home Assistant, Fire OS, and router firmware updated. ADB behavior and menu locations can vary by Fire TV model, generation, and Fire OS build, so record the exact model when troubleshooting. An update that changes an address, authorization state, or developer-menu behavior may require pairing again.
Should ADB debugging stay enabled?
For a permanently automated setup, leaving ADB enabled can be convenient, but it keeps a privileged listener available continuously. The safer default is to disable it when you do not need remote control, especially before taking the Fire TV to another network. If you need always-on automations, compensate with a trusted LAN, restrictive firewall rules, and regular checks of authorized hosts.

Do not confuse “the Fire TV is inside my house” with “every device inside my house is trusted.” A compromised laptop, insecure camera, or visitor device on the same reachable network can change the threat model. Segmentation is valuable precisely because it limits which local systems can attempt a connection.
Troubleshooting without weakening security
Home Assistant cannot connect
- Confirm ADB Debugging is enabled on the Fire TV and that the IP address in Home Assistant matches Settings > My Fire TV > About > Network.
- Check that the Fire TV and Home Assistant can communicate across the relevant LAN or VLAN rule.
- Look for the authorization prompt on the television; it may require the device to be awake and unlocked.
- Verify that no router rule blocks the intended local ADB port.
- If the built-in Python implementation is unstable, test the documented ADB-server option rather than opening the device to additional networks.
The Fire TV changed address
Update the integration with the current local address and consider a DHCP reservation. Do not solve a changing address by assigning a public address or forwarding the ADB port.
The authorization prompt names an unexpected host
Decline the request. Investigate which device is connecting, review your router and VLAN client lists, and revoke old ADB authorizations. Approve only after the requester is positively identified as the Home Assistant host.

Control stops after sleep, reboot, or an update
Reliability can vary by Fire TV generation and Fire OS build. Check whether ADB Debugging remained enabled, whether the address changed, and whether the authorization survived the reboot. Re-pair only from the known Home Assistant host and avoid broadening network access as a first response.
How ADB compares with other control approaches
ADB is attractive because it is local and integrates directly with Home Assistant, but its command scope is broader than a purpose-built media interface. When assessing another method, compare the following properties rather than assuming that “local” automatically means safe:

What Home Assistant’s usage figure does—and does not—show
Home Assistant displays Amazon Fire TV as a virtual integration used by 2.8% of active installations on its 2026 page data. That is an adoption figure, not a safety score, vulnerability rate, or attack statistic. It cannot tell you whether a particular household’s ADB configuration is secure.
Bottom line for a home installation
Using ADB to control a Fire TV Stick from Home Assistant is conditionally safe when it remains a local, authenticated connection on a network you control. Enable ADB Debugging only as needed, approve only the verified Home Assistant host, restrict reachability with router or VLAN rules, never expose the ADB port to the internet, and revoke old authorizations when hosts change. Because ADB is privileged debugging access rather than a narrow remote-control channel, disabling it when unused is the most conservative choice.
