That wording indicates a maximum of eight players in one group, although the final limit could change before Early Access.
The multiplayer design is described as a friends-only, private co-op experience. Survival, crafting, building and exploration are intended to work in co-op, but the game is still listed as Coming soon and remains in early development, so features and limits are not final.

This is not a case where multiplayer is merely an idea on a roadmap. The developers state that co-op support is already implemented for the game’s core systems. However, implementation during early development does not guarantee that every planned feature, player limit or connection option will remain unchanged when Early Access begins.

Can you play TROLLHEIM: GNOMES solo?
Yes. Solo play is an explicitly listed feature, not an inference from the game’s survival-sandbox format. The official description presents playing “on your own” as one of the intended ways to experience the game.
What solo play is designed around
TROLLHEIM: GNOMES is described as a survival-crafting sandbox set in a procedurally grown forest inspired by Nordic folk belief. Its planned gameplay loop includes gathering resources, crafting tools, cooking, constructing a base and exploring different biomes. How many players can join?
The official description says you can play “by yourself or with up to 7 friends.” Read literally, that means one player plus seven invited friends, for a stated maximum of eight players total.
Because the game is still in development, the eight-player interpretation should be regarded as the current advertised target, not a guaranteed final specification. Recheck the Steam page and the developers’ Early Access notes when the game becomes available. A revised party limit, technical restriction or mode-specific limit could replace the current wording.
Is the co-op public or private?
The developers characterize it as friends-only and private. That is the clearest information currently available about how groups are formed. The checked listing does not document public matchmaking, open servers or a browser for joining strangers.
“Private” also does not automatically answer practical questions such as whether the host’s world remains available while the host is offline, whether guests keep gathered resources, or whether a player can transfer a character between worlds. None of those systems has been confirmed.
What can you do together in co-op?
The developers say the core systems for survival gameplay, crafting, building and exploring different biomes are available and supported in co-op multiplayer. The official game description expands that setting into a procedurally grown Nordic wilderness where players gather materials, make tools, cook, construct structures and explore.

Survival and resource gathering
Co-op is intended to support the survival portion of the sandbox, including collecting the materials needed to make equipment and maintain a base. The available description does not provide a fixed list of needs, hazards, creatures or resource tiers, so avoid assuming mechanics such as hunger, temperature or combat until they are documented.

Tool crafting is part of the stated game concept and is included among the systems expected to function in multiplayer. A group could therefore divide gathering and production tasks, but the game has not published rules for shared inventories, individual crafting stations or ownership of crafted items.

Is TROLLHEIM: GNOMES coming to Early Access?
Steam lists the game as Coming soon and says it is planned for Early Access. The developers’ FAQ estimates that the game could remain in Early Access for at least 12–18 months, while emphasizing that this is an estimate and can change.
No fixed Early Access launch date is published in the available information. The 12–18-month statement describes the expected duration of the Early Access phase, not a countdown to its start and not a promise that the game will be complete after exactly 18 months.
What Early Access means for co-op expectations
The developers have confirmed enough of the core systems to support co-op during development, but an Early Access build can still change its player cap, world behavior, progression, networking or interface.
