Yes—conditionally. Total War: SHOGUN 2 remains a strong choice if you want a focused historical strategy game that combines turn-based clan management with real-time land and naval battles. The important decision in 2026 is which edition and storefront you choose. SEGA’s Complete Edition was scheduled for October 13, 2026, bundles the campaigns and associated DLC, and adds modern display, interface, localization, accessibility and technical features. Steam’s version also includes the original game and its associated DLC (except the Blood Pack), while other listed PC storefronts include only the Complete Edition. The new edition is not compatible with mods made for the original game, so players who depend on legacy mods should think carefully before switching.
What you are buying
Total War: SHOGUN 2 is a hybrid strategy game. You make economic, diplomatic and military decisions on a turn-based campaign map, then resolve important conflicts in real time. The original Steam listing describes diplomacy, spies, assassins, fire attacks and siege warfare as part of a campaign to unite 16th-century Japan. It supports single-player, online and LAN player-versus-player battles, and online and LAN cooperative play. The store describes it as “the perfect mix of real-time and turn-based strategy gaming for newcomers and veterans alike”; that is store copy, not an independent review.
The Complete Edition expands the historical scope beyond the main Sengoku Jidai campaign. SEGA says its three standalone campaigns cover more than 700 years of Japanese history, allowing you to move from medieval clan warfare to the country’s industrial-era transformation.

The separate campaigns are not merely cosmetic scenarios. Each changes the units, strategic pressures and historical context, which is why the Complete Edition is a broader purchase than the original 2011 release.

Which Shogun 2 edition should you buy?
SEGA’s current buying rules make the storefront as important as the game itself. The original Steam product stopped being sold as a standalone purchase on September 28, 2026. SEGA says the original game and its downloadable content are now included through the Complete Edition package, while people who already own the original retain access.

Does the Complete Edition include all DLC?
For practical buying purposes, the Complete Edition is SEGA’s all-in package. It includes the main game’s associated downloadable content, the Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai campaigns, major expansions, faction packs and other content updates identified in the announcement. On Steam, the package additionally grants the original game and its associated DLC, with one stated exception: the Blood Pack is not included because of age-rating restrictions.
That exception matters if you are comparing Steam with another store. It does not mean Steam’s Complete Edition is missing the major campaigns; Rise and Fall are included. It means the legacy Blood Pack is handled differently. If that add-on is important to you, read the entitlement wording on the checkout page rather than assuming every platform has identical content.

What is new in Complete Edition?
SEGA presents Complete Edition as an updated and enhanced release rather than a simple bundle. The publisher’s announcement and FAQ list the following changes:
- Updated lighting, shadows and textures.
- User-interface scaling for 1440p and 4K displays.
- Modernized controls.
- Japanese and Chinese voice acting, with full-text localization in the stated languages.
- More than 50 newly playable minor factions.
- Integrated mod support through Mod.io.
- A 64-bit upgrade.
- Ultrawide-monitor support.
- Colorblind accessibility options.
These are publisher-stated features. The available information does not establish independent performance benchmarks, frame-rate results, loading-time improvements or accessibility testing. If you are upgrading for a specific monitor, language or accessibility need, confirm the current store description and patch notes for your platform.
Will your original Shogun 2 mods work?
No. SEGA says mods created for the original version are not compatible with Complete Edition. The new release uses Mod.io for integrated in-game mod support, while the original game’s mods remain unchanged in the original environment. Do not assume that a community mod, save file or launcher configuration will transfer automatically.

This is the clearest reason to keep the original installation available if you have a large legacy mod setup. Complete Edition may be the better choice for updated visuals, controls and modern display support, but it is not a drop-in replacement for an existing modded loadout. Before purchasing, make a list of the mods you actually use and check whether their creators have published Complete Edition versions through Mod.io. If a particular overhaul has no compatible release, buying the new edition will not preserve that experience.

What do existing Steam owners get?
SEGA says existing Steam owners keep the original game and receive any missing original DLC at no cost. Qualifying owners are also eligible for a 75% loyalty discount on Complete Edition. The announced discount window begins at launch and ends on November 12, 2026 at 16:00 GMT (08:00 PST, 00:00 CST+1 and 01:00 JST+1).
Eligibility and the final amount are account- and region-dependent. The discount is temporary, and the displayed price may include local taxes or currency conversion. Sign in to the Steam account that owns the original product, open the Complete Edition page and verify the offer in the cart before assuming the 75% figure applies. Ownership on another storefront should not be treated as Steam ownership.
Launch date and price
SEGA’s FAQ scheduled Complete Edition for October 13, 2026 at 16:00 BST / 15:00 UTC (08:00 PDT, 23:00 CST and 00:00 JST+1). The announced list price was £34.99 / €39.99 / $39.99. Those are published reference prices, not a guarantee of the live amount in every country. Since launch status, introductory discounts and regional pricing are volatile, check the store page at the time you buy.

The original standalone Steam purchase ended on September 28, 2026. If you see an old article telling new buyers to purchase the original game first, it is out of date under SEGA’s current distribution plan.

How the game plays today
Turn-based planning
The campaign layer asks you to balance provinces, income, construction, research, diplomacy and succession while deciding where to move armies and fleets. Agents such as spies and assassins can shape the map without a conventional battle. This structure suits players who enjoy planning several turns ahead and accepting that a political decision can be as consequential as a tactical victory.
Real-time battles
When armies meet, the game switches to direct real-time control. Terrain, formations, morale, fire and siege tactics determine whether a numerically stronger force actually wins. Naval engagements add a separate battlefield rather than functioning as a simple campaign-map calculation.
Multiplayer and co-op
The original listing identifies online and LAN competitive play and online and LAN cooperative play. Availability can depend on the platform, network configuration and the population of players using the same edition. Complete Edition’s modernized systems do not change the need to verify current multiplayer support in the storefront you intend to use.
Technical and platform considerations
The original Steam page still shows legacy operating-system requirements and notes that the Steam Client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024. Those old requirements should not be read as a current guarantee that every listed operating system, driver or launcher combination is supported. Before installing, check the current Complete Edition page for your platform, confirm that your operating system receives security updates, and make sure your graphics driver and storage setup meet the live requirements.

The 64-bit upgrade, 1440p and 4K interface scaling, ultrawide support and updated rendering features are intended to make the newer edition fit contemporary PCs better. However, no independently verified performance figures are established here. A 4K-capable interface does not by itself guarantee a particular frame rate, and the publisher’s feature list does not specify hardware targets.

The original game launched on March 15, 2011, so its reputation combines long-term player approval with expectations formed by much older technology. Steam displayed 92% positive from 21,950 English-language reviews overall and 73% positive from 317 recent reviews in the 2026 snapshot used for this guide. Steam notes that off-topic review periods are excluded. Both figures can change as new reviews arrive, and they are store-review aggregates rather than controlled quality tests.
Those numbers support the view that the game has a durable audience, but they do not answer whether Complete Edition performs well on your hardware or whether your favorite mods have migrated. Use them as context, not as a substitute for checking the edition-specific details above.

- Historical-strategy newcomers: You want a clear setting, a campaign-to-battle loop and enough diplomacy and economy to make victories feel earned.
- Players seeking campaign variety: You want the original Sengoku campaign plus the earlier Genpei War and later Boshin War/industrialisation settings.
- Modern-display users: You value the publisher-stated 64-bit upgrade, updated rendering, 1440p/4K UI scaling and ultrawide support.
- Existing Steam owners: You can use the stated DLC entitlement and, if eligible, the time-limited 75% loyalty discount.
- Players starting without a storefront preference: Steam’s inclusion of the original game and associated DLC gives it a different value proposition from the other listed PC stores.
Who should wait or keep the original installation?
- Legacy-mod users: Original mods do not work in Complete Edition, and automatic transfer should not be expected.
- Players satisfied with the 2011 presentation: The new edition’s visual and interface promises may not justify another purchase if you do not need them.
- Buyers who require proven performance: Publisher feature lists do not provide independent benchmarks, so wait for platform-specific testing if frame rate or compatibility is critical.
- Anyone purchasing on a different account or storefront: Steam ownership benefits and loyalty pricing do not automatically carry across platforms.
A practical buying checklist
- Identify your goal. Decide whether you want the historical campaigns, modern display support, the original game’s legacy environment or all of them.
- Audit your mods. Write down the original mods and overhauls you actually use. Look for Complete Edition versions on Mod.io before uninstalling anything.
- Choose the storefront. If access to the original game and its associated DLC matters, compare Steam’s entitlement with the Complete Edition-only listings on Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG.
- Check ownership. Existing Steam owners should sign into the correct account and verify the DLC grant and loyalty price in the cart.
- Confirm the live price and timing. Use the store page rather than relying on the announced £34.99/€39.99/$39.99 price or the stated discount deadline.
- Check current requirements. Review the Complete Edition’s operating-system, graphics, storage and launcher requirements for your platform; do not rely on the old Steam requirements alone.
- Keep a fallback installation if necessary. If a legacy mod collection is essential, preserve the original game and its files rather than assuming the new edition can replace it.

Sales context and what it does not prove
SEGA’s 2026 announcement says the Total War series has sold more than 48.3 million copies. That is a series-wide figure, not a sales total for SHOGUN 2. It indicates the broader franchise’s reach but should not be used to estimate this game’s current player count or value.
Verdict: is Shogun 2 worth buying today?
Buy Complete Edition if you want the distinctive turn-based campaign and real-time battles, the three historical periods, and the publisher-stated modernization—and you are comfortable using a new mod ecosystem. Steam is the most feature-complete purchase path for a new PC buyer because it includes the original game and associated DLC apart from the Blood Pack. Existing Steam owners have an especially strong upgrade case if the loyalty discount appears on their account.
Keep or buy the original environment instead if your priority is legacy-mod compatibility. The new edition’s improvements do not make old mods transferable, and the available information does not establish independent performance results. Check the live storefront, your account entitlement and your required mods before committing.
For players whose priorities match its design, the game remains worth buying in 2026; it is not an unconditional recommendation because edition choice and mod compatibility materially change the experience.
