Short answer: new players should wait for patches or a substantial sale unless the complete DLC bundle, modern controls, expanded minor-faction roster and Japanese-language options are their main priorities. Existing Steam owners have a much better case because the launch-period upgrade discount is 75 percent, but the remaster’s early negative reception and incompatibility with original mods remain significant drawbacks.

What Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition actually is
This is an updated PC edition of Total War: SHOGUN 2, developed by MATABOO and Creative Assembly and published by SEGA. It combines the base game with the major standalone campaigns and associated downloadable content in one package.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Base game: Total War: SHOGUN 2.
- Standalone campaigns: Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai.
- Other content: the associated SHOGUN 2 downloadable content listed for the Complete Edition.
- Technology: a 64-bit upgrade, revised presentation and modernised input options.
The underlying game remains the same hybrid of turn-based empire management and real-time battles. You still manage provinces, armies, diplomacy and sieges on the campaign map, then fight battles directly. Avatar Conquest, co-operative and competitive campaigns, ambushes and custom battles remain available. Custom battles support up to eight players.

What is new in the remaster?
Visual and interface upgrades
SEGA lists improved lighting, shadows and textures, together with interface scaling for 1440p and 4K displays. The 64-bit upgrade is intended to modernise the PC foundation, while updated controls are designed for current mouse-and-keyboard expectations rather than the original release’s older input conventions.
More playable factions
The Complete Edition adds more than 50 newly playable minor factions. That is a substantial expansion for players who have already exhausted the original campaign starts, although the value depends on whether you want to replay the same historical sandbox with different strategic constraints.
Japanese and Chinese language support
The remaster adds full Japanese and Chinese voice acting and text localisation. This is more than a subtitle toggle: it gives players the option to experience campaign and battle presentation in those languages throughout the game.

Mod distribution is integrated through Mod.io rather than the original game’s mod workflow. The change is convenient for a new ecosystem, but it has a decisive compatibility consequence: existing SHOGUN 2 mods do not work in Complete Edition. If your current playthroughs depend on a large legacy mod collection, this is not a minor technical detail; it is a choice between two separate mod libraries.

What each storefront includes
The name “Complete Edition” does not mean every store grants the same ownership rights. The largest difference is whether the original SHOGUN 2 and its downloadable content are included alongside the remaster.
| Storefront | What you receive | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Complete Edition plus the original SHOGUN 2 and its DLC | The original Blood Pack is excluded. |
| Epic Games Store | Complete Edition | The original game is not included in the stated entitlement. |
| Microsoft Store | Complete Edition | The original game is not included in the stated entitlement. |
| GOG | Complete Edition | The original game is not included in the stated entitlement. |
That distinction matters most if you are buying for preservation, older mod support or the ability to keep playing the untouched original. Steam is the only listed storefront where the original game is bundled, and even there the Blood Pack exception applies.
Price and the Steam-owner upgrade
SEGA’s official launch price is £34.99, €39.99 or $39.99. Regional storefront pricing can differ, so treat those as the published reference prices rather than a universal checkout total.

| Buyer | Launch-period offer | What affects the value |
|---|---|---|
| New buyer | Full listed price: £34.99 / €39.99 / $39.99 | You are paying for the remastered package and, on non-Steam stores, not the original game. |
| Existing Steam owner | 75% loyalty discount from launch through 12 November 2026 at the stated regional cutoff | Legacy DLC is supplied at no additional cost, making the upgrade roughly one quarter of the listed launch price before regional rounding. |
The 75% offer is time-limited. It is not a permanent ownership benefit, and the end time is tied to the regional cutoff shown by the store. Check the price on your own Steam account before assuming the promotion is still active.

Performance: what the published requirements tell you
Steam publishes hardware requirements and frame-rate targets, not independent benchmark results. They establish the intended baseline, but they do not prove that every system will achieve the stated frame rate in large battles or late campaigns.
| Specification | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 11 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i3-8100 | AMD Ryzen 7 2700X |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | GeForce GTX 1060 3 GB | GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER |
| API | DirectX 11 | DirectX 11 |
| Storage | 70 GB | 70 GB |
| Steam’s stated target | 1080p/30 or 1440p/30 at minimum settings | 1080p/60 at medium settings |
The recommended target is modest by modern PC standards because it specifies 1080p at medium settings, not 1440p or 4K at high settings. A system that meets the minimum should be treated as compatible, not guaranteed to deliver a smooth 60 frames per second. Strategy games can become more demanding during large engagements and in late-game turns, and no independent laboratory testing is available here to quantify that behavior.
Launch reception and reliability concerns
At the time of evaluation, Steam showed an Overwhelmingly Negative rating: 19% positive from 1,522 all-time reviews. That is a launch-period snapshot, and review sentiment can change quickly as patches arrive, but it is a meaningful warning for anyone deciding whether to pay full price.
Launch reporting from GamesRadar and Windows Central described complaints involving bugs, poor performance and graphical problems. Some users and reports also alleged that parts of the artwork were AI-upscaled. That claim remains an allegation: no official source reviewed for this guide confirms it, so it should not be treated as an established technical fact.
Rank #4
PC Gamer’s assessment was more mixed. It praised SHOGUN 2’s underlying campaign and battle design, recognised the visual, control and voice improvements, and still found the package less essential than expected for existing players. The contrast explains the buying risk: the original game remains well regarded, while the quality of this particular launch build is being judged much more harshly.
Does it run better or worse than the original?
There is no independent frame-rate comparison establishing that Complete Edition is universally faster or slower than the original SHOGUN 2. The remaster has a 64-bit upgrade and updated rendering, but it also has higher published requirements and launch reports of performance problems. Those facts do not support a simple “better” or “worse” answer.
- Potential advantages: modernised controls, updated lighting and textures, current-resolution interface scaling and a 64-bit foundation.
- Potential disadvantages: a higher hardware floor, reported launch instability and no verified benchmark showing an across-the-board performance gain.
- Practical conclusion: owners should not uninstall the original on the assumption that the remaster replaces it technically. Steam buyers retain access to the original, while other storefront buyers do not receive it according to the stated entitlements.
Mod compatibility is the biggest ownership trade-off
Original SHOGUN 2 mods do not work in Complete Edition. The remaster uses Mod.io, so a mod must be rebuilt or re-released for the new edition before it can be used there.

Buy the remaster if
- You mostly play unmodified campaigns or are comfortable starting a new mod library.
- You want the newly playable minor factions and updated controls more than continuity with old saves.
- You value Japanese or Chinese voice acting and text localisation.
Keep the original central to your setup if
- Your campaigns rely on overhaul, graphics, total-conversion or balance mods from the original release.
- You need old mod-dependent saves to remain playable.
- You want a known, established mod ecosystem while the Mod.io catalogue develops.
For a heavily modded player, the Steam entitlement is especially useful because it lets you keep the original installed while evaluating the Complete Edition separately. On Epic, Microsoft Store and GOG, the stated package does not provide that same original-game fallback.
Best Value
- The American, British and French nations played an important part in the story of the Boshin war and your relations with these foreign powers will be integral to unit recruitment and to advancing your technology trees.
- Thirty nine new land units, including modern ranged units - such as the Gatling gun and Armstrong gun - controllable in a new third-person mode.
- New port siege battle type, this new battle type triggers when attempting a naval assault on an occupied enemy port. The attacking fleet must sail into the harbour and capture the port, running the gauntlet of coastal gun defences.
- New land and sea unit interactions, during a land battle, armies can call in offshore artillery support barrages.
- Campaign map bombardments: offshore naval units can bombard armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself.
Which players get good value?
First-time buyer
At the full launch price, waiting is the safer decision. You receive the complete campaign and DLC package, but you also accept unresolved launch-period complaints, uncertain performance on your hardware and a new mod ecosystem. A sale or a patch cycle can reduce those risks without taking away the core content.
Existing Steam owner
The 75% loyalty discount materially changes the calculation. You receive the legacy DLC at no extra cost and can keep the original game, while gaining the remaster’s factions, controls, visual updates and language options. The purchase is most defensible if those additions matter to you and you can tolerate testing an early build.
Competitive or co-operative player
The remaster retains competitive and co-operative campaigns, Avatar Conquest and custom battles for up to eight players. However, the value depends on your group adopting the same edition and tolerating any launch bugs together. The feature list confirms the modes are present; it does not guarantee a particular level of online stability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLanguage-focused player
Full Japanese and Chinese voice acting and text localisation are a genuine reason to choose Complete Edition. If that presentation is a priority, it can outweigh the lack of original-mod compatibility, especially for a new player without an existing SHOGUN 2 library.
A buying checklist before you pay
- Identify your storefront. If you want the original game included, Steam is the only listed option that provides it, with the Blood Pack exception.
- Check ownership status. Existing Steam owners should verify that the 75% loyalty price appears on their account and note the 12 November 2026 regional cutoff.
- Compare your PC with the published target. Confirm 64-bit Windows, processor, graphics memory, RAM and 70 GB of free storage. Meeting minimum specifications is not the same as targeting 60 frames per second.
- Inventory your mods. Make a list of the original mods and saves you cannot lose. None of those original mods will work in Complete Edition without a separate compatible release.
- Decide how much launch risk you accept. Steam’s 19% positive snapshot and reported complaints about bugs, performance and graphics make waiting a rational choice for risk-averse buyers.
- Match the purchase to your priorities. New factions, modern controls, language options and bundled DLC support buying sooner; preservation of the original mod setup points toward keeping or buying the original instead.
Bottom-line buying decision
For a new player, Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition is not an automatic full-price recommendation at launch. The package is impressively broad, with both standalone campaigns, associated DLC, more than 50 additional minor factions, modern controls, upgraded presentation and expanded language support. Yet those benefits arrive alongside a 19% positive Steam snapshot, reported bugs and performance complaints, an unconfirmed AI-upscaling allegation, and a mod break that permanently separates it from the original ecosystem.
For an existing Steam owner, the decision is more favorable during the 75% upgrade window. The discounted price, free legacy DLC and continued access to the original game reduce the downside. Buy now if the new factions, controls or language options are worth experimenting with; otherwise, keep the original installed and wait for patches or a deeper sale.
