Yes, but indirectly. Scientists infer that radioactive curium-247 (247Cm) existed while the first Solar System solids formed because its decay to uranium-235 (235U) can leave isotope patterns in meteorites. The result is a continuing, sample-dependent case rather than a direct detection of surviving primordial curium.

What the evidence actually shows

No primordial curium remains in Solar System rocks today. The isotope that matters, 247Cm, is short-lived on geological timescales and decays by alpha emission to 235U. The proposed signature is therefore a daughter-product record: if curium and uranium were separated unevenly before the curium decayed, different minerals or inclusions could acquire different amounts of radiogenic 235U relative to 238U.

Scientists measure uranium isotope ratios in ancient meteoritic material and then ask whether the differences follow the chemistry expected from that separation. Thorium-to-uranium and neodymium-to-uranium ratios are useful in this argument because they can act as proxies for how curium and uranium behaved during condensation and inclusion growth. A correlation with those proxies is more informative than an isolated uranium anomaly, although it still does not make every variation uniquely radiogenic.

The published record contains a striking early claim, a later high-precision study that found no resolvable effect in its selected phases, and subsequent studies that reported proxy-linked or very large variations in specialized refractory material. Those results concern different samples, measurement precisions and geochemical histories, so they should not be treated as one uniform measurement.

How the curium signal is supposed to form

1. Curium and uranium start in different proportions

When the solar nebula cooled, minerals and inclusions did not all incorporate elements in the same proportions. A phase that concentrated curium relative to uranium would begin with a different 247Cm/235U relationship from a phase that concentrated uranium. This chemical sorting had to happen before most of the curium decayed for a measurable daughter-product contrast to survive.

2. Alpha decay adds radiogenic uranium-235

Each 247Cm atom that decays produces an alpha particle and a daughter 235U atom. The newly produced uranium changes the ratio of 235U to the more abundant 238U. Because the parent is extinct, the present-day measurement records the daughter rather than the original curium itself.

3. Chemistry provides a consistency check

Uranium ratios alone can be altered by several processes. The curium interpretation becomes stronger when uranium isotope values covary with elements that should have followed the original curium/uranium partitioning. The 2010 CAI work centered on this proxy-correlation test, comparing uranium data with thorium/uranium and neodymium/uranium behavior instead of relying on a single anomalous grain.

What the major studies found

The 1980 Allende proposal

Mitsunobu Tatsumoto and Tadashi Shimamura examined uranium in the Allende meteorite and reported a very broad spread in the 238U/235U relationship. Their Nature paper interpreted that spread as evidence that live 247Cm was present when early Solar System material formed. The same abstract used radionuclide evidence to infer a delay of roughly eight million years between the end of nucleosynthesis and formation of meteoritic grains.

This paper is foundational because it framed uranium isotopes as a possible fossil record of an extinct actinide. Its numerical spread and timing estimate belong to the authors’ 1980 interpretation, not to a current universal chronology. Later work tested whether comparable effects could be reproduced with different materials and more precise analytical methods.

The 2006 high-precision null result

A 2006 Earth and Planetary Science Letters study examined nearly forty meteorite phases and found no resolvable departure from chondritic 235U/238U at its stated one-to-two-epsilon precision. For that suite, the absence of a detected signal translated into an initial 247Cm/235U upper limit below 8 × 10−5.

That result does not demonstrate that curium never existed. It limits the amount that could have been recorded in those phases under the study’s analytical sensitivity and geological assumptions. If curium and uranium were not strongly separated in the tested material, or if later processing erased the contrast, a null result would be expected even if other inclusions retained a signal.

The 2010 CAI correlation

Calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions are among the oldest recognizable solids in primitive meteorites and can preserve chemical differences established during high-temperature condensation. A 2010 Science study measured uranium in Allende CAIs and reported a range of 238U/235U values together with systematic relationships to thorium/uranium and neodymium/uranium.

The authors argued that the proxy correlations matched the expected consequences of curium/uranium separation followed by 247Cm decay. Their inferred initial ratio was higher than the upper limit obtained by the 2006 phase survey. The difference is not a simple arithmetic contradiction: the studies used different samples, scales of observation, proxy information and analytical treatments. It is a reason to keep each estimate attached to its own paper and material.

The 2016 refractory-inclusion result

A 2016 PNAS study reported 235U excesses in refractory inclusions that reached about six percent relative to average Solar System composition. The authors argued that the magnitude and context could be explained by decay of extant 247Cm.

That paper also discussed kinetic uranium isotope fractionation during condensation. Isotopes can separate because molecules or atoms with different masses behave differently during evaporation and condensation, without any radioactive parent being involved. Consequently, the geochemical setting matters: a large uranium anomaly is evidence that requires interpretation, not an automatic proof that every part of it came from curium.

The 2021 r-process application

A 2021 Science study used the near-matching half-lives of 129I and 247Cm, approximately 15.6 million years, as paired chronometers. Rather than assigning every uranium anomaly to one event, it asked what the combined radionuclide record says about the last astrophysical source of the Solar System’s rapid-neutron-capture, or r-process, elements.

This is a broader application of the meteorite record. It addresses the timing and identity of the final stellar or explosive source that supplied certain heavy nuclei, whereas the Allende and refractory-inclusion studies focus more narrowly on how individual solids acquired their uranium isotope compositions.

Why the results differ

Apparent disagreement becomes easier to understand when the studies are compared on four axes.

  • Sample type: Bulk meteorites, mineral separates, leachates, CAIs and refractory inclusions do not preserve the same chemical history. A bulk measurement can average away a contrast visible in an individual inclusion.
  • Sample scale: A study of many phases asks whether a signal is widespread; an inclusion study asks whether unusual microenvironments preserved an extreme composition. Those are different questions.
  • Analytical precision: “No resolvable deviation” means the value was smaller than the stated measurement uncertainty for that material. It does not mean the true initial abundance was zero.
  • Proxy behavior: A uranium anomaly that tracks thorium/uranium or neodymium/uranium carries different evidentiary weight from an anomaly with no chemical relationship to curium-bearing elements.
  • Competing fractionation: Nebular condensation can fractionate uranium isotopes kinetically. Any curium model must show why the observed pattern is not adequately produced by this non-radiogenic process.

How scientists distinguish a curium signal from ordinary isotope fractionation

  1. Measure uranium ratios precisely. Analysts determine 238U/235U or 235U/238U in a defined mineral, inclusion or separated phase, while documenting the instrument precision and sample preparation.
  2. Characterize the host chemistry. Concentrations and ratios of thorium, neodymium and other refractory elements reveal whether the material could have experienced the chemical sorting expected for curium and uranium.
  3. Test for covariance. If uranium isotope values change systematically with the proposed proxies, a parent-daughter model becomes more plausible than an isolated measurement error or random alteration.
  4. Model radiogenic growth. The measured daughter excess is converted into an inferred initial 247Cm/235U ratio using the sample’s formation and closure assumptions.
  5. Check alternative processes. Condensation kinetics, evaporation, later alteration and laboratory contamination must be evaluated because each can change isotope ratios without requiring live curium.
  6. Compare independent materials. Agreement among CAIs, refractory inclusions and other well-characterized phases is more persuasive than a result confined to one unusual fragment.

What “evidence for curium” does and does not mean

It means that some early Solar System solids contain uranium isotope patterns consistent with the daughter products of extinct 247Cm, and that at least some studies find the patterns linked to chemical proxies for parent-element separation. It does not mean a laboratory has recovered a primordial curium sample, measured an intact atom surviving from the nebula, or shown that every uranium isotope variation in every meteorite has the same origin.

The strongest wording is therefore conditional: selected CAIs and refractory inclusions preserve signatures that named studies interpret as curium-derived, while another carefully measured suite showed no resolvable effect. The case is sample-dependent and evolves as laboratories improve isotope precision and as more inclusion types are compared.

Why this matters for Solar System history

A clock for early solids

Because 247Cm decays on a timescale of millions rather than billions of years, any preserved daughter excess can constrain events close to the birth of the Solar System. The inferred ratio between parent curium and daughter uranium is used to estimate how much radioactive material was present when a mineral or inclusion closed to later exchange.

A test of nucleosynthetic timing

The historical Allende interpretation connected extinct curium to the interval between heavy-element production and grain formation. Modern studies treat such intervals as model-dependent: they depend on which sample carries the signal and how its chemical history is reconstructed.

A link to the origin of heavy elements

Curium is an actinide produced in extreme neutron-rich environments. Combining its meteoritic record with iodine-129, whose half-life is nearly the same, lets astrophysicists compare two independent radioactive clocks. The 2021 application uses that pairing to narrow the timing of the last source that contributed r-process material to the solar nebula.

Bottom line

The early Solar System almost certainly contained radioactive 247Cm if the proxy-correlated uranium patterns in CAIs and the large excesses in some refractory inclusions are interpreted as their authors propose. But the evidence is indirect, not a direct curium detection, and it is not uniform across meteorites. The defensible conclusion is that extinct curium is a strong, actively tested explanation for particular uranium isotope signatures, with sample chemistry, measurement precision and competing condensation effects determining how persuasive each result is.
