The XREAL xbx a01+ is worth considering if you want a lightweight, private display for movies or handheld gaming and already own a compatible video source. It is not a standalone smart-glasses platform: you supply the video, and some consoles need an adapter or hub. Its main trade-off is that reviewers praise its weight and brightness but report edge blur, difficulty reading small text, and stabilization artifacts.
What the xbx a01+ is—and what it is not
XREAL describes the xbx a01+ as an entry-level viewing-glasses product. Connect it to a compatible device and it acts as a personal screen; it does not independently run streaming apps. The optional Beam Pro is a separate companion, not a requirement for basic viewing.
XREAL advertises a virtual screen equivalent to 147 inches, a 50-degree field of view, 62 g weight, HDR10 support, refresh rates up to 120Hz, and peak brightness of 1,600 nits. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. The company also describes a one-cable USB-C DisplayPort connection and says the glasses have no battery to charge. Check the source device before buying. The glasses need video over DisplayPort (DP) and 5V/1A power for the large-screen use case. A USB-C port by itself does not guarantee compatibility: the device must support DP video output and provide the required power. XREAL lists examples including Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED, some phones, tablets, computers, and handheld consoles; support varies by device. XREAL device connection guide

- USB-C devices: Confirm that the exact model supports DP video output and the required power.
- Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED: XREAL’s connection guide says these require an XREAL Hub. Engadget notes that Switch and Switch 2 do not connect directly without an additional dock solution; confirm current Switch 2 support with XREAL before purchase.
- PlayStation, Xbox, and other HDMI sources: XREAL says these need an HDMI-to-USB-C adapter. Include the adapter in your setup and budget.
Use the manufacturer’s device connection guide to check the connection path for your specific source. A glasses-and-source setup may be less convenient than a direct USB-C connection if it requires a hub or adapter.
How the display works in practice
Modes and dynamic range

Refresh rate and stabilization
XREAL says stabilization requires a source capable of 120Hz. That requirement narrows which setups can use the feature. Tom’s Guide also reported warping and ghosting when stabilization was enabled, so the mode may be a poor fit if a steady image matters more to you than the trade-off described by that reviewer. The same review says HDR modes reduce refresh to 60Hz or 90Hz; treat those as the reviewer’s findings rather than a universal result for every device and setting. Tom’s Guide review
What reviewers say about comfort, clarity, and text
Tom’s Guide described the glasses as lightweight and the image as bright, but reported blur toward the edges and difficulty reading small text. The reviewer’s findings make the a01+ a more natural candidate for video and games than for productivity that depends on crisp, readable text across the display. For a comparison, Tom’s Guide judged the RayNeo Air 4 Pro stronger in audio, vividness, and raw panel sharpness, while finding advantages for the XREAL in comfort, brightness, design, and ease of use. That is one publication’s evaluation, not a universal ranking; prioritize the characteristics you value most and compare the total setup rather than relying on a single “best” label.

The listed box contents are the glasses, USB-C cable, S/M/L nose pads, cleaning cloth, protective case, and manual. The shop also presents a model-specific prescription lens accessory and a Beam Pro bundle option. If your source needs a Hub or HDMI-to-USB-C adapter, factor that into the total before comparing the glasses with alternatives.

Who should buy the XREAL xbx a01+?
- Consider it for movies or handheld gaming if you want a private, portable screen and your source has confirmed DP video output and sufficient power.
- Look elsewhere or compare carefully for text-heavy work if small text and edge-to-edge clarity are priorities; Tom’s Guide reported limitations in both areas.
- Check alternatives on sound and image character if vividness, audio, or raw panel sharpness matters more to you than the comfort and brightness advantages Tom’s Guide attributed to the XREAL.
- Compare feature sets and full prices if you want anchored spatial features. Engadget positions XREAL’s more expensive One-series glasses as offering more sophisticated AR capabilities; the a01+ is the simpler display option.
- Confirm every connection and accessory if you plan to use a console or HDMI source. Compatibility and extra hardware can determine whether the setup is convenient and affordable for your use.
