There is no verified announcement of a free Xbox Series X|S upgrade in December 2026. The game described by that headline is almost certainly The Survivalists, Team17’s island-survival sandbox. Microsoft’s Xbox Store already lists the game for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, but the available official listings do not state that Xbox One owners will receive a new, free Series X|S entitlement in December, nor do they provide an upgrade date or eligibility rules.
What game does the headline refer to?
The Survivalists is an adventure-survival sandbox set on an island. Its Xbox description focuses on four linked activities: exploring the island, building a base, crafting equipment and training monkeys to help with survival. The monkeys are not just decorative companions; managing them is part of the game’s progression and day-to-day survival loop.
Microsoft’s official Xbox Store catalog lists The Survivalists on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. That confirms Series X|S availability, but availability is not the same as a newly announced upgrade program.
What is actually confirmed about Xbox Series X|S support?
- Platforms: Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S are shown in Microsoft Store listings.
- Game type: island exploration and survival combined with construction, crafting and monkey training.
- Upgrade announcement: no official December 2026 announcement, release date, entitlement rule or owner-eligibility policy was identified in the available Team17 or Xbox information.
Because the store already lists a Series X|S version, an owner may see the game as playable on a newer console through Microsoft’s existing platform-delivery systems. However, the listings alone do not establish whether an Xbox One purchase automatically grants a separate optimized build, whether an upgrade is planned for December, or whether any upgrade would be free.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why the December upgrade claim should be treated cautiously
The wording “getting a free Xbox Series X|S upgrade this December” implies a scheduled announcement and a specific entitlement policy. Neither is present in the official information available for this title. Until Team17 or Xbox publishes a direct statement, there is no reliable basis for promising that owners will receive a free upgrade or that a December release is imminent.
Do not confuse three different facts:
- The Survivalists is listed for Xbox Series X|S now.
- A store listing can show platform support without describing an upgrade from an Xbox One license.
- A dated December upgrade requires a separate announcement identifying timing and eligibility.
Which editions are listed for Xbox?
Microsoft lists multiple editions. The confirmed differences are the included content, not a published performance comparison between Xbox One and Series X|S.

The Complete Edition is the broadest listed package because it includes both the Monkey Business Pack and the Frostbite Fortress expansion. The listings do not establish that buying this edition changes any Series X|S upgrade rights.
Can you try The Survivalists through Game Pass?
Xbox Wire reported a Free Play Days promotion running from September 3 through September 6, 2026, for Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential members. That was a limited-time trial, not an ongoing Game Pass inclusion and not evidence of a December upgrade. Those dates have passed, so readers should not assume the trial remains available.

What Xbox owners should do before December
- Check the current Xbox Store page for your account and region. Confirm which edition you own and whether the page presents a Series X|S version as playable with that license.
- Look for an explicit Team17 or Xbox announcement. A meaningful upgrade notice should state the release date, whether the upgrade is free, and which digital or disc owners qualify.
- Do not purchase a second copy solely on the basis of the headline. The available information does not prove that a separate Series X|S purchase will be required or that an existing Xbox One license will be upgraded.
- Recheck after any announcement. Upgrade policies can differ by edition, disc ownership, region and storefront, so rely on the exact entitlement language rather than a retailer description or social-media summary.
Bottom line on the “free December upgrade”
The Survivalists is the likely monkey-focused survival game behind the headline, and it is already listed for Xbox Series X|S as well as Xbox One. The Complete Edition adds the Monkey Business Pack and Frostbite Fortress, while the September 3–6, 2026 Free Play Days event was a finished, temporary trial. No official source currently confirms a free December 2026 Series X|S upgrade, so treat that claim as unverified until Team17 or Xbox publishes the date and entitlement terms.
