Short answer: Samsung positions the 50-inch QE50QN80H (the UK model code is QE50QN80HAUXXU) for PS5, Xbox and other current-generation consoles. Its feature list includes Auto Game Mode (ALLM), VRR, HGiG, Game Bar, AI gaming modes and Game Motion Plus. However, Samsung’s own UK listing contains a significant specification conflict: the gaming description says the 50-inch set supports VRR at 4K/120Hz, while the connectivity table lists 4K 60Hz for HDMI 1, 2, 3 and 4. You should therefore treat 4K/120Hz as unconfirmed for your exact regional television until Samsung verifies the model code and port mapping.

The 50-inch version also does not receive Samsung’s “Motion Xcelerator 144Hz” claim. It can be a sensible console TV if you are comfortable checking the signal your particular set accepts, but it should not be bought on the assumption that it is a guaranteed 4K/120Hz or 144Hz console display.

What Samsung actually promises for the 50-inch QE50QN80H

Samsung’s UK product page for the 2026 QN80H identifies the QE50QN80HAUXXU as a 50-inch Neo QLED 4K Mini LED television with four HDMI inputs. The same page explicitly mentions Xbox and PS5 compatibility and lists these gaming features:

  • Auto Game Mode, based on ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode)
  • Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
  • Game Bar
  • HGiG for supported HDR games
  • AI Auto Game Mode and AI Gaming Optimizer
  • Game Motion Plus

Those features address the main console requirements: reducing processing delay when a game starts, matching the panel refresh to changing frame rates, exposing gaming controls and applying HDR guidance. They do not, by themselves, prove that every game will run at 120 frames per second or that every HDMI input accepts a 4K/120Hz signal.

The 4K/120Hz statement conflicts with the HDMI table

Samsung’s descriptive gaming text says the 50-inch model supports “VRR/4K@120Hz.” Yet the page’s connectivity specification lists “4K 60Hz” for HDMI 1, HDMI 2, HDMI 3 and HDMI 4. Both statements appear on the same official UK listing. Samsung does not explain whether one refers to a particular operating mode, a regional variation, a firmware condition or an editorial error.

That means no responsible answer can name a guaranteed 4K/120Hz port for the QE50QN80H from the published page alone. Do not assume HDMI 1, HDMI 2, HDMI 3 or HDMI 4 is the special 120Hz input simply because another Samsung television uses that arrangement. Confirm the complete regional product code and the supported signal for each input with Samsung or with the television’s own information screen.

Do not apply the larger-size 144Hz claim to this television

Samsung states on the UK page: “Motion Xcelerator 144Hz: Motion Xcelerator 144Hz not applicable to 50".” The 50-inch model is therefore excluded from the 144Hz headline used for some larger QN80H sizes. Samsung also says 4K 144Hz is available only with PC-connected content, not as a promise of 144Hz console operation.

A separate Samsung Australia 2026 retailer specification sheet reinforces that screen size matters: its 50-inch row shows a 50Hz refresh-rate entry and FreeSync as “N/A,” while the listed 55-, 65- and 75-inch rows show 144Hz VRR (100Hz native) and FreeSync Premium Pro. Those entries are Australia-specific and should not be treated as a universal specification for every market, but they are another reason not to transfer larger-screen claims to the 50-inch set.

Is it good for PS5 and Xbox?

It is potentially good for either console when used at a signal the television actually accepts. ALLM can switch the set into a lower-processing game mode, VRR can help smooth variable frame rates when the console and game support it, and HGiG can provide a useful HDR tone-mapping reference. The Game Bar gives you a way to inspect or change gaming options without leaving the game.

The qualification is important: Samsung has not published an independent input-lag measurement for this exact model in the material available here, and no console-specific performance test establishes how quickly this set responds or how reliably it holds a particular mode. A television feature list also cannot make a game render at 120fps. The console, the game’s performance mode and the TV’s accepted signal all have to agree.

What PS5 can and cannot guarantee

PS5 games commonly offer a choice between a higher-resolution quality mode and a higher-frame-rate performance mode. Only games that include a 120fps mode, with the appropriate display settings enabled, can produce a 120Hz output. The QE50QN80H’s advertised VRR feature may help when frame delivery varies, but it does not turn a 30fps or 60fps game into a 120fps game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After connecting the console, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output on the PS5 and inspect the displayed resolution, 120Hz output capability, VRR status and HDR status. Menu names can change with system software, so use the current labels shown by your console. If the PS5 reports only 4K at 60Hz, that is the negotiated limit of the current setup; do not infer that a different game will silently receive 4K/120Hz.

What Xbox can and cannot guarantee

Xbox Series consoles similarly depend on each game’s frame-rate mode. On the console, open Settings > General > TV & display options, then use the display-details screen to see which 4K, HDR, 120Hz and VRR combinations the TV reports. A game must also support the selected mode. If Xbox lists 4K at 60Hz but not 120Hz, check the cable, input selection and television documentation before changing advanced options.

How to connect and configure the QE50QN80H

Samsung’s general console guidance says to connect a game system to the TV by HDMI and, where a set supports 4K/120Hz, to use an input rated for that signal. Its Samsung Korea support article is a general guide published in 2021, not a verified menu walkthrough for the 2026 QE50QN80H. Use it as basic connection advice, while relying on the exact regional manual and on-screen signal information for this model.

  1. Verify the model suffix. Read the label in the TV’s support or about screen and on the packaging. QE50QN80H variants can have different regional specifications. The UK suffix QE50QN80HAUXXU is the one described by Samsung’s UK page.
  2. Connect the console directly to the TV. Plug the PS5 or Xbox into one of the four HDMI inputs rather than passing the signal through an older receiver, soundbar or HDMI switch. Intermediate equipment can impose a 4K/60Hz limit even when the TV and console support more.
  3. Select the matching HDMI input. Use the TV remote’s source control to select the socket you used. If the source remains on the wrong input, the console’s output-information screen will not describe the intended connection.
  4. Locate Game Mode or Auto Game Mode. In the TV’s Settings, search for the gaming or external-device section and make sure Game Mode is enabled or set to Auto. Exact menu names and locations can vary by firmware and region. Auto Game Mode is the feature Samsung associates with ALLM.
  5. Set the console’s output conservatively first. Start with automatic resolution, refresh rate, VRR and HDR detection. Record what the PS5 or Xbox reports before forcing a manual 120Hz option; forcing an unsupported mode can produce a blank screen or an “out of range” message.
  6. Check the TV’s Game Bar or signal information. Open the Game Bar while a game is running and inspect the resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR indicators. Compare those values with the console’s video-output screen. The two screens should agree; if they do not, the TV is reporting the signal it actually accepted.
  7. Test one variable at a time. If a 4K/120Hz option is offered, enable it and verify the result, then test VRR and HDR separately. A successful menu toggle is not proof of active 120Hz; confirm the live signal readout while a compatible game is running.

Troubleshooting common problems

The console shows only 4K/60Hz

  • Check that the TV is the QE50QN80H 50-inch model and note its regional suffix.
  • Try another HDMI input, but do not assume any particular socket is the 120Hz port; Samsung’s UK table lists 4K/60Hz on all four.
  • Connect the console directly, bypassing receivers, splitters and capture devices.
  • Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable if you are testing a high-bandwidth mode. A neutral search description such as “Ultra High Speed HDMI cable 2m” identifies the cable class; buying a cable does not resolve the television’s conflicting published specification.
  • Install current TV and console firmware, then repeat the automatic detection.
  • Ask Samsung to confirm 4K/120Hz support for the exact product code and to identify the supporting input, if one exists.

VRR will not activate

VRR requires support from the console, the game and the display. Confirm that VRR is enabled in the console’s video-output settings and that Game Mode is active on the TV. Some games use a fixed frame rate or disable VRR in particular modes. If the TV’s Game Bar does not show VRR while a compatible title is running, capture the displayed resolution and refresh rate when contacting Samsung.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDR looks washed out or too dark

Run the console’s HDR calibration with the TV already in its game picture mode. HGiG is a guidance option for compatible HDR games, not a guarantee that every title will use the same tone-mapping method. Compare the result with HGiG enabled and disabled, keeping the setting that preserves highlight detail and shadow visibility in the games you play.

The screen goes blank after selecting 120Hz

Wait for the console to revert if it offers that option, or restart it while holding the TV’s source on the connected HDMI input. Then return to automatic video output. A blank screen generally indicates that the current combination of resolution, refresh rate, HDR or VRR is outside what the TV, cable or intermediate device negotiated. Do not repeatedly force the same mode before checking the TV’s documented limits.

Which specifications matter when comparing another TV?

If you are deciding between the QE50QN80H and another display, compare the exact screen size and regional model rather than the product family name. The unresolved HDMI-rate statement is itself a buying consideration: clear port documentation is valuable when 4K/120Hz is a requirement.

Comparison point What to verify Why it matters
Refresh rate at your target resolution Ask whether 4K/120Hz is accepted from PS5 and Xbox on the exact size and region. Panel marketing numbers do not prove console input capability.
HDMI input capability Check the maximum resolution and refresh rate for every socket, not just the number of inputs. A four-port TV may still have different limits—or, in this case, conflicting published limits.
VRR and ALLM Confirm support for the console generation and the operating range. VRR smooths supported variable frame rates; ALLM reduces the chance of leaving game mode off.
HDR gaming controls Look for HGiG or an equivalent documented tone-mapping mode. HDR calibration differs between games and displays.
Documentation quality Prefer a manufacturer that identifies the supporting port and signal combinations unambiguously. Clear specifications reduce setup time and avoid buying hardware for a mode the TV cannot accept.

What is confirmed—and what is not

Confirmed from Samsung’s published material: the QE50QN80H is a 50-inch 2026 QN80H television; the UK listing names four HDMI inputs; Samsung markets the range for PS5 and Xbox; and the listed gaming features include ALLM, VRR, Game Bar, HGiG, AI gaming options and Game Motion Plus. Samsung also explicitly excludes the 50-inch size from Motion Xcelerator 144Hz.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Not independently established: a measured input-lag figure, guaranteed 4K/120Hz operation on a named HDMI port, or consistent 144Hz console support. The UK page’s 4K/120Hz gaming statement and its 4K/60Hz-per-input table must both remain visible in any buying decision. Samsung support should resolve that discrepancy for your regional code before you pay a premium specifically for 120Hz console gaming.

Bottom line

The Samsung QE50QN80H has the right type of console features and is explicitly marketed for PS5 and Xbox, so it can be a capable 50-inch gaming TV when its accepted signal matches your needs. The decisive caution is Samsung’s contradictory HDMI information. Treat 4K/120Hz as a question to verify—not as a guaranteed specification—and do not apply the larger QN80H sizes’ 144Hz claims to this 50-inch model. Connect the console directly, enable Game Mode, inspect the live Game Bar and console output information, and obtain Samsung’s confirmation of the exact regional port limits before relying on 4K/120Hz.
