For most people who already own a PS5, no—not solely for GTA 6. Grand Theft Auto VI is confirmed for both PS5 and PS5 Pro, but the official information available before launch does not promise a Pro-only frame rate, resolution, graphics mode, or dramatic visual upgrade. The PS5 Pro can make sense if you want its improvements across a broad library of supported games and can justify its premium price, but buying it on the assumption that GTA VI will run at 60 frames per second is not supported by confirmed information.

What is confirmed about GTA 6 and PS5

PlayStation’s official GTA VI page lists the game for PS5 and PS5 Pro on November 19, 2026. It describes GTA VI as a single-player experience and does not list a PS4 version. That makes either current-generation PS5 model a confirmed platform; the Pro is not required to play the game.

Sony’s PlayStation Blog also says GTA VI will use PS5 features including DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, the controller speaker, Tempest 3D AudioTech and the PS5 SSD. Those are PS5 platform features, not proof of a Pro-exclusive mode. A standard PS5 therefore provides the officially described console experience at launch.

The release date and technical details are still time-sensitive. The assessment here reflects official information available through October 13, 2026, before the game’s release. Rockstar could still publish system-specific details, and launch patches could alter performance, so treat any buying decision as time-sensitive too.

PS5 Pro price compared with the standard PS5

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the current U.S. recommended retail prices on March 27, 2026, with the prices taking effect April 2. These are recommended prices, not guarantees of a retailer’s live price, stock or promotional discount.

Console U.S. recommended retail price Difference versus PS5 Pro What the price represents
PS5 Pro $899.99 — Current U.S. MSRP; disc drive sold separately
PS5 $649.99 $250 less Current U.S. MSRP listed by Sony
PS5 Digital Edition $599.99 $300 less Current U.S. MSRP listed by Sony

The premium is therefore $250 over the listed disc-equipped PS5 price or $300 over the listed Digital Edition price. Your real difference can change with bundles, sales, regional pricing, taxes and retailer availability. Do not treat these U.S. figures as prices for other countries.

Remember that the headline Pro price is not necessarily your complete setup cost. A buyer who wants disc games or 4K Blu-ray movies must add Sony’s separately sold disc drive, while a digital-only buyer may not need it. Add the $79.99 Standard or $99.99 Ultimate GTA VI edition announced by Take-Two to compare the full launch outlay, and check the storefront for current tax and regional pricing.

What the PS5 Pro hardware actually adds

Sony’s September 10, 2024 PS5 Pro announcement describes general hardware capabilities rather than GTA VI test results. Compared with the PS5 model used in Sony’s comparison, the Pro has:

  • 67% more GPU compute units. More graphics hardware can provide additional rendering capacity in games that support the Pro.
  • 28% faster memory. Higher memory bandwidth can help the system handle more demanding rendering workloads.
  • Up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay. This is Sony’s general console claim, not a measured GTA VI benchmark or a guaranteed improvement in every title.
  • Advanced ray tracing. Supported games can use more complex lighting and reflections, but the effect depends on the game’s implementation.
  • AI-driven PSSR upscaling. Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution can reconstruct a higher-detail image from a lower internal render when a game supports it.
  • A 2TB SSD. The larger built-in drive provides more installation space than the standard storage configuration described in the announcement.

These capabilities can improve image quality, lighting or performance in selected games. Sony explicitly says Pro-enhanced features apply only to supported titles and vary by game. A larger GPU or faster memory does not automatically create a new graphics mode in software that has not been optimized for it.

There is also a practical distinction between a game being technically compatible and being specifically enhanced. A compatible title can run on the Pro without using every feature, while an enhanced title may offer a patch, higher resolution, steadier frame rate or extra ray-tracing effects. Look for a named enhancement or developer description rather than assuming that the console’s specification sheet guarantees one.

What is not known about GTA VI on PS5 Pro

The official GTA VI and PlayStation material reviewed does not publish a PS5 Pro resolution, frame-rate target, graphics preset, ray-tracing configuration or comparison with the standard PS5. It also does not say that GTA VI requires a Pro, or that the Pro will deliver a 60-fps mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That means claims such as “GTA VI will be 4K,” “the Pro version will run at 60 fps,” or “the Pro will have a special quality mode” are predictions until Rockstar publishes technical details or independent testing measures the released game. Even the word “best” in Sony’s platform messaging should not be interpreted as a promise of a particular frame rate or resolution.

Do not infer a setting from trailer footage, console marketing percentages or performance in another Rockstar game. A trailer may be captured on high-end development hardware, and a theoretical rendering gain can be spent on denser crowds, longer draw distances, lighting or image reconstruction instead of a higher frame-rate cap.

For a purchase decision, separate two questions:

  • Is the hardware more capable in general? Sony’s specifications and performance claims establish that it is.
  • How will GTA VI use that capability? That remains unresolved before launch.

Is the PS5 Pro worth buying for GTA 6 if you already own a PS5?

If GTA VI is your main reason for upgrading

Keep your current PS5 unless confirmed GTA VI settings or measured launch testing show an improvement you value enough to justify the premium. The standard PS5 is an announced platform, and no official source reviewed promises a Pro-only performance mode. Buying now for an assumed 60-fps result carries a substantial risk of disappointment.

Waiting also preserves flexibility. You can compare side-by-side measurements after release, see whether a patch is required, and decide whether the improvement is visible on your display. A later purchase may involve a sale or bundle, although no future discount or stock level is guaranteed.

If you play many games that support PS5 Pro enhancements

The calculation changes when GTA VI is only one part of your library. Sony’s GPU, memory, ray-tracing and PSSR improvements may be useful across supported games, particularly if you notice image-quality compromises or want higher visual settings on a large, high-resolution display. Check each game’s documented Pro support rather than assuming every title receives the same treatment.

If you want more internal storage

The Pro’s 2TB SSD can be valuable if your installed library regularly fills a smaller drive. Storage convenience is a separate benefit from GTA VI performance. Compare the cost of the Pro with the cost of your preferred expansion solution, and remember that storage capacity does not change a game’s graphics settings. Game updates can also be large, so leave free space rather than budgeting only for the initial installation.

If your current PS5 is failing or you need a replacement

A replacement decision is different from an upgrade decision. If your existing console has hardware problems, compare warranty or repair options with both PS5 models. Choose the Pro for its broader features and storage only if those benefits matter beyond GTA VI; otherwise, the standard PS5 remains the lower-cost confirmed route to the game.

Should a first-time buyer choose PS5 Pro for GTA 6?

Choose the standard PS5 when the priority is simply playing GTA VI

Someone who does not own a current-generation console can buy the standard PS5 and play the announced PS5 version. It delivers the PS5 features Sony describes for GTA VI, including DualSense effects, 3D audio support and SSD-based loading. This avoids paying the Pro premium for game-specific benefits that have not been published.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Pro when its wider advantages fit your setup

The Pro is easier to justify for a buyer who values image quality across many supported games, has a display that makes those differences visible, wants the larger 2TB drive, and accepts the higher price. That is a library-wide and hardware-based decision, not a confirmed GTA VI requirement.

Consider how you use physical media

The PS5 Pro ships without a disc drive. Sony says the currently available PS5 Disc Drive is sold separately. If you regularly buy games on discs or use the console for 4K Blu-ray movies, include the additional drive cost and availability in your total budget. If you buy digitally, the missing drive may not matter.

Do not assume a boxed game always means a disc. For GTA VI specifically, Rockstar describes the box as a code package, so buying the Pro drive just for that edition would add cost without changing how that code is installed.

What the boxed GTA VI edition means for PS5 Pro buyers

Rockstar Games Customer Support, in an update last revised August 18, 2026, says the boxed “physical” GTA VI version contains a download code rather than a game disc. You redeem that code through the relevant platform account, and Rockstar notes that regional restrictions apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because the box contains a code, you do not need the optional PS5 Pro disc drive to play that particular edition. The drive could still matter for separately purchased disc games or movies. Before buying the boxed edition, check that its code region matches the country or region of your PlayStation account; an incompatible code may not redeem even though the box is sold locally.

A code also cannot be resold or lent in the same way as a disc once it has been redeemed. Keep the receipt and packaging until activation succeeds, and buy from a retailer that clearly identifies the code’s region. These are edition-management concerns, not reasons to choose one PS5 model over another.

The announced GTA VI prices from Take-Two Interactive Software’s June 24, 2026 pre-order announcement were:

Edition Announced U.S. price Qualification
Standard Edition $79.99 Price announced for pre-orders on June 24, 2026; verify the current storefront price
Ultimate Edition $99.99 Price announced for pre-orders on June 24, 2026; verify the current storefront price

Those are game prices, not console prices, and they may change by region, taxes or promotion. Add the edition you want to the console cost when comparing your total launch purchase.

How your display affects the value of a Pro upgrade

A more capable console is most useful when you can see or feel the difference. Evaluate your setup before spending the premium:

  • Screen size and viewing distance: Image-quality improvements are easier to notice on a large screen viewed from a normal gaming distance than on a small display across the room.
  • Refresh-rate capability: A high-refresh display can show smoother output when a game offers a higher frame-rate mode, but owning a 120 Hz television does not make a 120-fps GTA VI mode exist.
  • HDR and contrast: Better lighting or ray tracing matters more when the display can reproduce strong contrast and highlights.
  • Priorities: Decide whether you prefer sharper visuals, steadier motion, richer lighting or simply reliable access to the game. The Pro cannot guarantee a particular balance until Rockstar documents its modes.

Also check your television’s HDMI features, input lag and gaming modes. A premium console connected through an unsuitable input or with a processing-heavy picture mode can hide the benefits of faster rendering. Conversely, a modest display may still benefit from steadier performance, but that benefit must be demonstrated by the game rather than assumed.

Do not buy a new television or monitor solely on the assumption that GTA VI will use a particular resolution or frame rate. Match the display to confirmed specifications when they are available.

A practical decision framework

Your situation Evidence-led choice Reason
You already own a standard PS5 and mainly want GTA VI Keep the PS5 for now GTA VI is confirmed for PS5, while Pro-specific settings and performance are unannounced.
You already own a PS5 and play many supported titles Consider PS5 Pro Its general graphics and storage improvements may pay off across your library.
You own no current-generation console Compare both models against your budget and display Both are confirmed GTA VI platforms; the Pro premium buys broader hardware capability rather than a stated requirement.
You want a guaranteed 60-fps GTA VI mode Wait for official settings or testing No official source reviewed promises 60 fps on either PS5 model.
You want the boxed GTA VI edition on a Pro Buy the code edition without a disc drive Rockstar says the box contains a download code, subject to account-region compatibility.
You use disc games or physical media regularly Price the optional drive before choosing Pro The Pro does not include a disc drive, so your total cost can be higher.

Use the table as a budget test, not a prediction of GTA VI’s final modes. If the extra $250 to $300 would displace games, accessories or a display you actually need, the standard model is the safer choice. If you already planned to buy a Pro for several enhanced titles, GTA VI can be one factor without being the justification for the entire purchase.

What to check before you purchase

  1. Confirm your region’s prices. The figures above are U.S. recommended retail prices. Check the local PlayStation store and retailers for currency, taxes, bundles and stock.
  2. Decide whether you are upgrading for one game or many. If GTA VI is the only title driving the purchase, the missing game-specific evidence is important. If you play a large library of supported games, assess those titles individually.
  3. Check your display and storage needs. A Pro upgrade is easier to appreciate when your screen and viewing habits expose image-quality differences, or when 2TB of storage solves a real problem.
  4. Choose digital or disc use deliberately. The boxed GTA VI edition is a code in a box. A Pro disc drive is optional and relevant mainly to other disc games or physical media.
  5. Verify code-region compatibility. Match any boxed-code edition to the region of your PlayStation account before opening or redeeming it.
  6. Wait for game-specific evidence if performance is decisive. Look for Rockstar’s published graphics modes or independent measurements of the released game rather than relying on generic GPU claims or rumors.
  7. Check return and warranty terms. Retailer return windows, console warranty coverage and drive availability can matter if launch-day stock is limited or a bundle changes after purchase.

What evidence would justify changing the recommendation?

A stronger GTA VI-specific case for PS5 Pro would require concrete information such as a documented Pro graphics mode, a measured frame-rate difference under comparable conditions, or a visual feature unavailable on the standard PS5. Ideally, that information would identify the rendering resolution, reconstruction method, ray-tracing settings, frame-rate target and whether the mode is stable during demanding gameplay.

Testing should compare the same scene, patch version and display settings on both consoles. A headline peak frame rate is less useful than sustained performance during driving, combat, dense crowds and weather effects. Likewise, a higher internal resolution may not be worthwhile if it introduces unstable motion or compromises other visual settings.

Until those details exist, the responsible conclusion is conditional: the Pro is a more capable console on paper, but its value for GTA VI cannot be calculated from the console specifications alone. Reassess after Rockstar publishes technical information or independent launch testing is available.

Bottom line for GTA 6 buyers

If you already have a working PS5, do not upgrade solely because you expect GTA VI to run at 60 fps or to receive a dramatic Pro-exclusive visual treatment. Those outcomes are not confirmed. Buy the PS5 Pro when its broader game-library improvements, 2TB storage, ray tracing and PSSR justify the premium for your budget and setup. If you simply need a console for GTA VI, the standard PS5 is a confirmed and less expensive platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I upgrade to a PS5 Pro before GTA 6?

Not solely for GTA VI. Both PS5 and PS5 Pro are confirmed platforms, but no Pro-specific frame rate, resolution or graphics mode has been announced. Upgrade when the Pro’s benefits across your wider game library and its 2TB storage justify the U.S. premium.

Will GTA 6 run better on PS5 Pro?

It may, because the Pro has more GPU compute units, faster memory, advanced ray tracing and PSSR support, but the amount and type of improvement are unconfirmed. Wait for Rockstar’s settings or independent launch testing before treating better performance as guaranteed.

Is GTA 6 60 fps on PS5 Pro?

No official source confirms a 60-fps mode on either PS5 model. A 120 Hz television also does not establish that the game will render at 120 frames per second.

How much does the PS5 Pro cost compared with PS5?

Sony’s U.S. recommended prices effective April 2, 2026 are $899.99 for PS5 Pro, $649.99 for PS5 and $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition. Retailer discounts, bundles, taxes and regional prices can change the amount you actually pay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a PS5 Pro disc drive for the physical GTA 6 edition?

No. Rockstar says the boxed edition contains a download code rather than a disc, so the optional drive is not needed for that purchase. Check that the code’s region matches your PlayStation account.

What is included with the PS5 Pro?

Sony’s announcement lists a 2TB SSD and says the console ships without a disc drive. The drive is sold separately and matters mainly for other disc games or 4K Blu-ray movies.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: GTA VI is confirmed for both PS5 models, but a PS5 Pro-only frame rate or visual mode is not. Existing PS5 owners should wait unless the Pro’s wider library improvements and 2TB storage justify $899.99; first-time buyers can play GTA VI on the less expensive standard PS5.
