Playdate is a small, deliberately unusual handheld listed by Panic at $229, with 24 original Season One games included. Its crank, monochrome screen and library built around distinctive controls make it unlike a conventional gaming handheld—but “one of gaming’s best deals” is a value judgment, not an established market-wide ranking. Panic’s shop currently marks the console out of stock, so the list price does not mean it is available to order now.
What you get for the listed price
Panic’s official product page lists Playdate at $229 before tax and shipping. That price includes the handheld and 24 original Season One games, delivered two per week over 12 weeks at no extra charge. The official shop currently says the console is out of stock; check the Playdate shop for current price and availability.
The strongest case for the value is the combination of dedicated hardware and a substantial included set of original games. It is not a promise that every game will suit every player, or that all games for the system are included. Games in Panic’s separate Catalog are additional purchases unless explicitly identified otherwise.

The crank is a real control, not a decoration
Playdate has a crank mounted on its side, alongside a D-pad and A and B buttons. Games can use the crank as an input, giving developers a way to build mechanics that do not map neatly onto a standard handheld. Whether that feels fresh or awkward depends on the game and the player; the crank is central to the system’s identity, not a substitute for conventional controls.

The screen and hardware are intentionally modest
The display is a 400 × 240, one-bit screen: monochrome rather than full color. The design favors a small, distinctive device and games made for its capabilities, not the visual detail or broad compatibility expected from a mainstream handheld. Panic lists a 168 MHz Cortex M7 processor, 16 MB RAM and 4 GB flash storage.
It is a platform with games beyond Season One
Panic’s Catalog currently displays Season Three listings and links to Seasons One and Two, as well as other ways to browse. Its listings can change, so the storefront’s visible selection should not be treated as a fixed count. A community-maintained Playdate Community Wiki says Season Two comprises 12 games plus the bonus game Blippo+, premiered May 29, 2025, and was offered as a $39 season bundle plus tax. Those details are community-reported, not a current official price guarantee; see the Season Two wiki entry and verify current terms with Panic.

Is the included game collection likely to suit you?
The 24 included games are a varied starting library, not 24 guaranteed favorites or a uniform amount of playtime. In its 2022 launch review, GameSpot found the collection varied and often charming, but said some crank uses felt gimmicky and that game length and replay value varied. The reviewer estimated that games they finished averaged a couple of hours, while some kept them playing for more than five hours. That is one reviewer’s experience at launch, not a formal playtime study or a measure of the current Catalog.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the price has changed
The current official list price is $229. That is different from historical figures sometimes mentioned in coverage: GameSpot reported in March 2023 that Panic planned to raise the price from $179 to $199 because manufacturing costs had risen. The 2023 report also said Catalog launched with 16 games priced from $1 to $15 and that more than 25,000 consoles had been sold since launch. Those are dated historical figures, not current pricing, library-size or sales data. Read GameSpot’s 2023 price report for that context.
