Overdrive is presented by its own indexed website as a game library for PS5, but its claim that it makes games and DLC free has not been independently verified. The site could not be opened during reporting, and there is no confirmed information here about how the app works, what its catalog contains, or whether it provides access to any games. Treat the claim as unverified—not as a working or legitimate way to get PlayStation content.
What is Overdrive, and does it actually make PS5 games free?
Overdrive’s indexed website describes the app as “a game library for the PS5” that appears on the console’s home screen. That is the site’s description, not confirmation that the app works or contains games. The page could not be accessed, and no independent source verified its operation, catalog, or claims about free games and downloadable content (DLC). Overdrive’s indexed site is therefore not enough to establish that the offer is real.
A forum question asking whether an Overdrive app for downloading library titles is real reflects the uncertainty, but an unverified post is not evidence that the app works. Do not assume that a download, game catalog, or free DLC offer is genuine based on a listing or claim alone.

Coverage of Overdrive appeared amid September 2026 reporting about Relapse, a PS5 jailbreak. Kyle Orland reported for Ars Technica on September 30, 2026 that Relapse worked on firmware up to version 13.6, following Sony’s release of system software version 14.00.00 in mid-September. The report describes a WebKit vulnerability in the PS5 browser leading to kernel write access.

- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Oliver Haslam’s Tom’s Hardware report, also published September 30, 2026, describes Relapse support for firmware versions 7.00 through 13.60. These are dated reports about a particular exploit; they do not establish Overdrive’s functionality or a compatibility range that should be assumed to remain current.
Neither report independently verifies that Overdrive distributes games or DLC. The existence of jailbreak reporting does not prove that a separate app works, nor that content advertised through it is authorized.

Why can staying on older PS5 firmware be a trade-off?
Exploit compatibility can depend on the console’s system software version, while newer games or updates may require more recent firmware. The September 2026 coverage describes that tension: keeping an older version may preserve compatibility with a reported exploit, but can limit access to newer software. Tom’s Hardware discusses a Wolverine example partly on the basis of player reports, so it should not be treated as a universal or independently established requirement.
Sony’s official guidance takes the opposite practical approach for ordinary console use: it recommends installing current updates for security and proper functioning. Its UK support page says, “SIE strongly recommends always installing the latest update as soon as possible after the update is released.” The guidance also warns that unofficial update data or a modified console may affect operation, warranty, and repair services. See Sony’s PS5 system software update support page.

What does Sony’s agreement say about unauthorized software?
Sony’s US PlayStation 5 System Software Licence Agreement prohibits using tools to bypass or circumvent PS5 security or authentication, downgrading system software, and using hardware or software to make the system accept unauthorized or pirated software. The agreement also lists actions Sony may take if it determines that a user violated its terms. Read the US licence agreement for the full wording and consequences.
This describes the terms of Sony’s US agreement; it is not a universal legal conclusion about every country or circumstance. Whether a specific act violates local law depends on applicable jurisdiction and facts.

What should you take away before trusting the claim?
- Overdrive’s function is unconfirmed: its indexed site calls it a PS5 game library, but the available evidence does not establish that the app operates or offers games and DLC.
- Exploit details are time-sensitive: the Relapse firmware ranges above were reported on September 30, 2026, and may be superseded.
- There are practical risks: Sony warns that modified consoles or unofficial update data may affect operation, warranty, and repair service; its agreement also restricts circumvention and unauthorized software.
- Do not infer authorization from availability claims: no independent verification establishes that Overdrive’s purported content is legitimate or accessible.
