The Hilton Honors American Express Card gives eligible cardmembers complimentary Hilton Honors Silver status automatically and charges no annual fee. It does not automatically grant Gold: earning Gold requires $20,000 in eligible calendar-year card purchases. The card is most compelling if you stay at Hilton properties and can use Hilton points; its points are not cash, and the card has no Free Night Reward benefit.
What the card earns
The U.S. card’s published earning rates vary by purchase category. American Express lists the following rates:
| Eligible purchase | Hilton Honors points earned |
|---|---|
| Eligible purchases made directly with Hilton hotels and resorts | 7 points per dollar |
| U.S. restaurants, supermarkets and gas stations | 5 points per dollar |
| Other eligible purchases | 3 points per dollar |
These are points earned per dollar, not a guaranteed cash-return percentage. The practical value depends on whether you can redeem Hilton Honors points for stays you want and on the points required for those bookings. See the card’s current earning terms.

What automatic Silver status means
Eligible cardmembers receive complimentary Hilton Honors Silver status while they meet the card’s terms. American Express describes a 20% bonus on base points as part of Silver status. Silver also includes a fifth night free on qualifying standard-room reward stays booked entirely with points, subject to the program’s booking availability and rules. That benefit helps only if you have enough points and can book an eligible reward stay.

Silver is the automatic tier; it is not Gold. The benefits page describes the status benefits, and the product page lists the card’s status terms.
How to earn Gold with this card
The card’s Gold upgrade is tied to spending, not simply holding the card. Under the cardmember agreement, the basic cardmember can receive Gold after $20,000 in eligible purchases during a calendar year. Purchases on additional cards can count toward the threshold, but the upgrade is for the basic cardmember.
- Make at least $20,000 in eligible purchases on the account during a calendar year. The agreement’s eligible-purchase terms determine what counts.
- Allow approximately 10 to 12 weeks after reaching the threshold for the Gold status upgrade to take effect.
- Once earned, Gold status lasts through the remainder of the year in which the threshold is reached and the following calendar year.
Those timing details and eligibility terms are in the cardmember agreement dated December 31, 2025. If your spending would be driven mainly by the status target, weigh the required purchases against what you would otherwise use and the Gold benefits you expect to use.

American Express says this card does not currently have a Free Night Reward benefit. Its points are Hilton Honors points, so their usefulness depends on Hilton award availability and your ability to use them. The issuer’s card FAQ and benefits set out the current limitation.
The card has no foreign transaction fee, according to the agreement dated December 31, 2025. It also describes purchase protection and rental-car loss-and-damage coverage, but neither should be treated as unrestricted insurance:
- Rental-car loss-and-damage coverage requires paying for the entire rental with the eligible card and declining the rental company’s collision damage waiver. The coverage is secondary, excludes liability, and is unavailable for rentals in Australia, Italy and New Zealand. Other terms and exclusions apply.
- Purchase protection applies only to covered purchases, for up to 90 days, and is subject to the agreement’s limits and exclusions.
Review the benefit descriptions and the applicable terms before relying on either protection.

Interest, fees and the cost of carrying a balance
The card has no annual fee, but that does not make borrowing free. The cardmember agreement dated December 31, 2025 lists these variable APR margins over the Prime Rate:

| Account activity | APR stated in the December 31, 2025 agreement |
|---|---|
| Purchases | Prime Rate + 12.74% to Prime Rate + 21.74% |
| Cash advances | Prime Rate + 21.99% |
| Penalty APR | Prime Rate + 26.74% |
Because these APRs are variable, the actual rates can change with the Prime Rate; check the current terms before applying. The agreement says purchase interest is not charged when you pay the full balance, adjusted for any outstanding plans, by the due date. The due date is at least 25 days after each billing period closes. Cash advances accrue interest from the transaction date.
The same agreement lists a cash-advance fee of the greater of $10 or 5%, late and returned-payment fees of up to $40, and Plan It fees of up to 1.33% monthly. These are agreement terms, not a reason to carry a balance for points. See the full cardmember agreement for conditions and the current agreement for updated terms.

The card is a reasonable fit if you want Hilton points from everyday purchases, value automatic Silver status, stay with Hilton often enough to use the program benefits, and pay your statement balance in full. The no annual fee means you do not need to justify a recurring card fee, but the rewards still have value only when they fit your travel plans.
It is a weaker fit if you want a free-night certificate, do not expect to redeem Hilton points, or would spend more than planned to reach Gold. Before choosing a hotel card, compare the annual fee and benefits, automatic status tier, spending needed for a higher tier, earning rates on your actual purchases, free-night features, foreign transaction fees and current APR terms. The card’s current product page and agreement are the authority for its terms.
