The NiSi 16mm f/2.8 ASPH for Fujifilm GFX is a sharp, well-built manual-focus lens for photographers who specifically want an exceptionally broad view. Its 16mm focal length gives NiSi’s claimed field of view of more than 118 degrees, but that coverage can make ordinary scenes feel crowded. Add the manual-only camera workflow, wide-aperture vignetting and filter caveats, and this is a specialized lens rather than an easy default. It makes sense if you have a clear use for that extreme width and are comfortable working around its limitations.

What the NiSi 16mm f/2.8 is—and how wide it is

This is a manual-focus, medium-format prime sold in separate Fujifilm GFX G-mount and Hasselblad XCD mount versions. The G-mount version was reviewed on a Fujifilm GFX 50S. NiSi claims a full-frame equivalent near 12.6mm and a field of view exceeding 118 degrees, figures that help explain why the lens can capture far more than a conventional wide-angle prime.

NiSi lists a 16mm focal length, f/2.8 maximum aperture, f/22 minimum aperture and an optical design of 16 elements in 12 groups, including three aspherical and four ultra-low dispersion elements. The aperture ring has eight clicked blades. The minimum focus distance is 0.25m, and focus travel is 180 degrees. NiSi lists these specifications and its optical-performance claims on its G-mount product page; the maker’s claims about edge-to-edge resolution and distortion or chromatic-aberration control should not be mistaken for independent test findings.

What the review found in real use

Sharpness and construction

Jeremy Gray of PetaPixel described the lens as sharp and well-built. In his review-sample experience, it was fairly sharp at f/2.8, with some fringing and vignetting; resolution improved noticeably at f/4 and f/5.6. Those are one reviewer’s observations, not a guarantee for every sample or camera body. Gray also liked the metal body, weather sealing, tactile focus-ring resistance and clicked full-stop aperture positions from f/2.8 through f/22.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Astrophotography

Gray saw mostly circular stars, with occasional aberrations. He considered vignetting the bigger issue for astrophotography and difficult to correct in post. He still regarded the lens as a capable option for GFX photographers willing to work on processing, in a system he described as having few astro choices. That is a qualified endorsement, not a promise of clean corners straight out of camera.

Close foregrounds—and busy frames

The 0.25m minimum focus distance lets you place a foreground subject close to the lens and exaggerate the perspective against a broad background. That can make a compelling composition, but it does not make every scene better: Gray found the 118-degree view could feel busy and considered the lens specialized. The practical question is whether your subjects benefit from including so much of the scene, not simply whether the lens can fit more into the frame.

Manual operation and GFX camera setup

The G-mount lens has no electronic communication with the camera. Gray says GFX users need to enable “shoot without lens.” The camera does not receive aperture information from the lens, so the aperture is not recorded in EXIF; read the setting from the barrel instead. The clicked full-stop positions are straightforward to feel, but intermediate settings are harder to reproduce precisely without electronic reporting.

This workflow may be acceptable for deliberate landscape, architecture or night-sky work. It is less convenient if you depend on camera-recorded aperture metadata, need to change apertures quickly, or expect autofocus and lens-camera coordination.

Filters: an 82mm thread with a caveat

NiSi specifies an 82mm front filter thread and says the lens comes with a custom 95MAG adapter ring for stacking filters. Gray found that some 82mm screw-in filters he tried caused vignetting. The thread size is therefore a useful compatibility starting point, not assurance that every filter will avoid darkened corners with this very wide lens. He also notes that the larger filters are a separate expense.

How it compares with other GFX wide-angle choices

The alternatives PetaPixel discusses trade extreme width and a faster maximum aperture against autofocus, electronic communication, corrections or tilt-shift control. Lens Field of view and aperture Focus and camera workflow Special capability or trade-off
NiSi 16mm f/2.8 ASPH Widest option in this comparison; f/2.8 Manual focus; no electronic communication Very broad view and faster aperture; no in-camera electronic aperture reporting
Fujifilm GF 23mm f/4 R LM WR Narrower view; f/4 Autofocus, electronic communication and Fujifilm corrections More integrated camera workflow, but not as wide or fast as the NiSi
Fujifilm GF 20-35mm f/4 R WR Zoom range of 20–35mm; f/4 Autofocus, electronic communication and Fujifilm corrections Framing flexibility; not as wide at its widest setting or as fast as the NiSi
TTArtisan 17mm f/4 tilt-shift Close focal length to the NiSi; f/4 Manual workflow Offers tilt and shift; slower than the NiSi and described as having a lower review-time price

The comparison and its stated feature differences are from PetaPixel’s review. PetaPixel reported the NiSi at $1,189 during a discount when the review was published in 2026, and $1,399 as its regular price. NiSi’s US store listed it at $1,399 when accessed in 2026. These are dated, volatile prices rather than guaranteed current offers; check the seller before buying. The product specifications and store listing are on NiSi Optics USA’s product page.

Should You Buy It?

Maybe. Buy the NiSi if your work calls for a genuinely extreme wide-angle view on GFX, you value f/2.8, and you are willing to focus manually, track aperture outside the camera and manage possible vignetting. Its close focus can add dramatic foreground perspective, and Gray’s review sample showed useful sharpness, especially stopped down.

Choose a Fujifilm option instead if autofocus, electronic aperture data and in-camera corrections matter more than the NiSi’s extra width and speed. Consider the TTArtisan if tilt-shift is the point of the purchase and f/4 is acceptable. If you do not already have a recurring subject or composition that benefits from this much coverage, the NiSi’s defining strength may make it harder—not easier—to use regularly.
