The “Legacy Edition” name should be read carefully. Current storefronts list the game as a Legacy Edition, but the available product information does not provide a complete change log against the original release. The Nintendo entries are the most important source of potential confusion. A store page that simply says “Nintendo Switch” is not interchangeable with a Switch 2 page that explicitly advertises split-screen and online multiplayer. Hardware generation and product page both matter.

Yes on the platforms whose current listings advertise it, but the exact answer depends on the version. Steam marks the game as supporting both online and local co-op. Official PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo listings describe cooperative play for as many as three players; Nintendo UK and PlayStation phrase this as playing with up to two friends. That is consistent with the game’s three-hero party.

No available evidence establishes cross-platform play. You should assume that a PC player cannot automatically join a console player, or that different console families can share a session, unless the relevant platform holder explicitly says so. “Online co-op” means the feature is offered on that platform; it does not prove cross-play between platforms.
Is War in the North Legacy Edition worth buying?
The strongest recommendation is for a specific type of buyer: someone who values Middle-earth atmosphere and cooperative action more than modern open-world design or constantly varied combat. The game’s appeal is substantial when those priorities match, but the same design can feel dated or repetitive when they do not.
It is a good fit for Tolkien fans
The setting explores a lesser-known northern theater while the One Ring’s journey continues elsewhere. The official character descriptions give each hero a clear archetype: Eradan is a Dúnedain Ranger, Andriel an Elven Loremaster, and Farin a Dwarven Champion. Those descriptions are storefront copy, not an independent assessment of balance or combat quality, but they explain why the game naturally supports a three-person party.
It suits players who enjoy action RPG systems
Expect real-time combat, equipment decisions, and a campaign built around fighting through encounters. Players who like checking gear, improving a character, and repeating a familiar combat rhythm may find the structure satisfying. It is most compelling with the right co-op group

On Switch 2, the listing explicitly advertises split-screen and online play. On PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, the current listings advertise co-op, subject to the normal requirements of each platform’s online service and account system.

Returning players should have realistic expectations
Fans of the original may appreciate having the game listed for current platforms, particularly if they want to replay the campaign with friends. However, the available edition information does not document a full technical overhaul. A return purchase makes sense because of access, platform availability, or co-op—not because a comprehensive remaster has been confirmed.
Who should skip it or wait for a sale?
- Players who dislike repetitive hack-and-slash combat: TechRadar identifies repeated encounters as a drawback. If combat variety is your main measure of value, the Legacy Edition may become monotonous.
- People expecting a modern open-world RPG: The game’s documented identity is a focused action RPG with a three-character party, not an open-world simulation.
- Original Switch owners who need couch co-op: The reviewed original Switch version does not provide it. Look for the Switch 2 listing or choose another supported platform.
- Buyers seeking guaranteed cross-play: Cross-platform multiplayer has not been established. Do not purchase on the assumption that friends on another platform can join.
How to choose the right edition
- Start with the hardware you actually own. Decide between PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, original Switch, and Switch 2 before comparing anything else. The Nintendo generations have materially different co-op information.
- Decide whether multiplayer is essential. If you will play alone, the original Switch’s lack of co-op may not matter. If you want to play with friends, remove that version from consideration unless your local Nintendo page says otherwise.

- Match the co-op mode to your group. Choose a listing that explicitly supports online play if friends are remote. Choose one that explicitly says local or split-screen if you will share a display. Do not treat “co-op” as proof that both modes are included unless the page names them.
- Confirm platform compatibility. On PC, check Steam’s requirements and controller support against your system. On consoles, confirm the console generation and any online-service requirement shown by the platform holder.
- Check the return and refund rules. Digital refund policies vary by platform, and multiplayer compatibility is easiest to discover before a purchase. If co-op is the reason you are buying, verify the feature before starting a download or redeeming a key.
- Compare the current price in your region. A reliable, uniform price comparison is not available across all regions and platforms. Check the store you will actually use rather than relying on an old listing or a price from another country.
What the campaign and party structure suggest
The game’s premise gives each player a natural role within a fellowship of three. Eradan’s Ranger identity, Andriel’s Loremaster identity, and Farin’s Champion identity provide recognizable fantasy archetypes for a group to divide among themselves. The official descriptions establish who these characters are; they do not, by themselves, prove that one class is stronger, easier, or more valuable than another.
For a solo player, the three-hero concept still explains the game’s structure: the campaign is built around a fellowship rather than a lone protagonist. TechRadar’s reviewer, writing after 15 hours with the original Switch version, recommends the game for Tolkien fans and action-RPG players while warning that repeated hack-and-slash encounters can become monotonous. The 15-hour figure is the reviewer’s playtime, not an official campaign-length statistic and not a claim that every player will finish in that time.

This matters to the buying decision because co-op can change how repetition feels, but it does not remove the underlying structure. If you enjoy refining equipment and fighting through familiar action sequences with friends, repetition may be an acceptable trade-off. Current prices were not reliably established across regions, so a single value judgment based on a dollar amount would be misleading. Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo can show different currencies, taxes, discounts, and promotional schedules. A sale price can change the recommendation for a player who is uncertain about repetitive combat, but the amount and duration of any promotion must be checked on the local storefront.
Store inventory and product pages can also change. Before purchasing, read the live listing rather than relying on an old article, an imported screenshot, or a product page for a different Switch generation.
