The 1999 RPG described by this headline is almost certainly The Legend of Dragoon, a Japanese role-playing game (jRPG) from Sony Computer Entertainment. Push Square’s PlayStation Plus guide lists it in the PS Plus Premium catalog and shows a 10/10 review entry. That score belongs to Push Square; it is not a universal or aggregate rating.

“Free” means included with an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership while Sony continues licensing the game in your account’s region. You do not own the game outright, and access can end if the subscription lapses or the catalog listing changes.

What 1999 RPG is included with PlayStation Plus?

The Legend of Dragoon launched in 1999 for the original PlayStation and is generally classified as a jRPG. Its four-disc adventure follows Dart and his companions through a conventional party-based campaign, but its timed “Addition” attacks and transformation-based Dragoon abilities give battles a distinctive rhythm.

Push Square’s PlayStation Plus guide identifies the game as available to PS Plus Premium members and displays a 10/10 review score. Treat that number as one outlet’s review, not as a verified consensus score or a guarantee that every player will rate the game the same way.

What “free” means on PS Plus Premium

  • Included access: The game is part of the Premium catalog rather than a permanently free download.
  • Active membership required: You must keep the Premium subscription active to launch it through the catalog.
  • Region and licensing apply: Catalog availability can differ by country and can change when licensing agreements expire.
  • No ownership transfer: Canceling Premium, changing to a lower tier, or losing the catalog license can remove your access.

Before downloading, sign in to the PlayStation account you actually use for PS5 play, open the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, and search for “The Legend of Dragoon.” Confirm that the result shows the Premium entitlement for your country. Store labels and catalog organization can vary by region, so do not rely on a headline or an old screenshot as proof that it is available now.

Does Sony’s October 2026 announcement confirm the game?

No. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s October 2026 PlayStation Plus announcement says the month’s catalog additions become available on October 20 and specifically names Dino Crisis 2 and RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Complete Edition as Premium Classics. It does not name The Legend of Dragoon. That announcement is therefore a current reference point for the Classics Catalog, not confirmation that Dragoon was added in October or that it is licensed in every market.

How to play The Legend of Dragoon on a PS5

  1. Make sure the console is signed in to the account with a PlayStation Plus Premium membership.
  2. Open the PlayStation Plus area and select the Classics Catalog.
  3. Search for The Legend of Dragoon, then open its product page.
  4. Check the displayed tier, country-specific availability and any expiration notice before selecting Download or Stream.
  5. Launch the game from your game library while the Premium membership remains active.

If the title does not appear, check the account’s country, confirm that the subscription is Premium rather than Essential or Extra, and search the catalog directly instead of using a web result. A missing listing can indicate regional licensing or a catalog change rather than a console fault.

PS Plus Premium versus buying an original PS1 copy

The two options solve different problems. Premium is the practical choice for playing on a modern console with minimal setup; an original disc is a collectible that you keep independently of a subscription.

Consideration PS Plus Premium catalog Original PS1 copy
Access model Subscription access while Premium is active and the catalog license remains in your region. One physical game you own, subject to the disc’s condition and hardware compatibility.
Platform and convenience Designed for modern PlayStation catalog access, with downloading or streaming options where offered. Requires the original disc and compatible original or legacy hardware; modern-console support depends on the platform’s capabilities.
Cost over time Recurring Premium payments; the game itself adds no separate catalog charge while included. One-time purchase, but prices vary with condition, completeness, scarcity and seller demand.
Preservation and collectibility Convenient digital access, but availability depends on licensing and service terms. Tangible packaging and independent ownership, with resale potential; discs, cases and manuals can deteriorate.

Choose Premium when convenience matters most

Premium makes sense if you already pay for the tier, want to play on PS5, and do not need permanent ownership. It avoids hunting for a complete four-disc set and avoids concerns about a used disc’s condition.

Choose a physical copy when ownership matters most

An original copy is the better fit for collectors, preservation-minded players and anyone who wants access without a recurring catalog subscription. Verify that all discs are present, inspect them for damage, and account for the equipment needed to read them. Prices are market-dependent, so neither a specific resale value nor a universal “fair price” can be stated without a live listing and condition report.

Is the 10/10 rating real?

Push Square’s guide shows a 10/10 review entry for The Legend of Dragoon. That is a genuine Push Square score as presented in its guide, but it should not be described as a Metacritic score, an average of critics, or an objective industry rating. The number expresses that publication’s evaluation of the game.

What to check before you start

  • Confirm that your membership is Premium; lower PS Plus tiers do not provide the same Classics Catalog entitlement.
  • Verify your PlayStation account country, because catalog rights are regional.
  • Look for an expiration or removal notice on the game’s product page.
  • Decide whether you value immediate PS5 convenience more than owning a physical collectible.
  • If you buy a disc, check completeness and condition rather than assuming every used listing is equivalent.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
