The John Lewis High Power Handheld Fan is a compelling budget option on the evidence of Expert Reviews’ August 2026 testing: it delivered strong measured airflow, ran for a long time on its lowest setting and cost £20 for the plastic version at the time of the review. Its main drawback is practical rather than technical: the fan head is fixed, so you cannot angle it toward your face or use it hands-free on a desk.
What you get for the review-time price
Expert Reviews listed the plastic John Lewis High Power Handheld Fan at £20 in Mint, Petal or Beach, and an aluminium-clad version at £25 in black or silver. Those are prices recorded in the 28 August 2026 review, not confirmation of current prices or stock.
The fan has four speed settings, a digital display for speed and battery status, USB-C charging and an included hand strap. Its head is about two inches across, while the handle is around 11cm tall. Two buttons control speed: press to raise or lower it, and double-tap the down button to switch the fan off. The head does not tilt or rotate.
How much airflow does it produce?
In Gareth Thomas’s Expert Reviews measurements, the fan registered 1.6, 2, 2.3 and 2.9m/s at 50cm across its four settings. At one metre, the lowest setting produced no reading on the reviewer’s anemometer; the highest setting registered 1.6m/s. These are measurements from the review’s tests, not manufacturer specifications.
#1 Best Overall
For context, the review recorded a peak of 1.3m/s at 50cm for the Shark ChillPill, while the Dyson HushJet Mini Cool produced reported gusts of 4.3m/s. The John Lewis fan therefore moved more air than the Shark in that comparison but did not match the Dyson’s reported peak. Readings depend on test distance and method, so the figures are most useful as comparisons within the review rather than universal performance ratings.
Is it loud?
At 50cm, Thomas measured 48dBA on the lowest speed and 59dBA at maximum. On the maximum setting, the review recorded 65.6dBA for the Shark ChillPill and 62.4dBA for the Dyson HushJet Mini Cool at the same distance. In that test, the John Lewis fan was quieter than either alternative at full speed.

How long does the battery last?
John Lewis’s stated battery life, as reported by Expert Reviews, is up to 15 hours. In the reviewer’s run-down test on the lowest speed, the fan lasted 16 hours and 29 minutes. That result reflects continuous low-speed use; it should not be taken as an estimate for typical use across multiple speeds. USB-C is used for charging, but the review identifies slow charging as a drawback.

The fixed head is the clearest reason to choose another design. You can hold the fan where you need it, but you cannot tilt it toward your face, set it at a different angle on a bedside table or fold it into a desk fan. Expert Reviews contrasts this design with the hinged Shark ChillPill and the angle-adjustable John Lewis Handheld & Foldable Desk Fan.
Rank #3
The reviewer used the fan at a desk, while travelling and beside a bed, as well as testing airflow, sound and battery life. Testing began around mid-August 2026 and included both hot and milder conditions. Those observations describe one reviewer’s use and measurements, rather than independently replicated laboratory results.
How does it compare with the older John Lewis handheld fan?
At 50cm, the older John Lewis Handheld & Foldable Desk Fan measured 1.3m/s on its lowest setting and 2m/s on its highest, compared with 1.6m/s and 2.9m/s for the High Power model. Expert Reviews judged the difference marginal in practical terms, particularly given the newer model’s review-time premium of about £10. The older fan’s adjustable angle may be more useful if directing airflow matters more than maximum measured speed.

Who should buy it?
- Choose it if you want a small handheld fan with four speeds, a clear battery display, strong measured airflow and long low-speed runtime at the review-time budget price.
- Look for an adjustable model if you want to aim the airflow while sitting at a desk or bedside, or need the fan to stand at a chosen angle.
- Check before buying that the current listing, price, finish and stock match what you want; the £20 and £25 prices were listed in the August 2026 review.
Gareth Thomas, Expert Reviews’ Home Editor and the review’s author, summed up the balance this way: “On the balance of its features and price, the John Lewis High Power Handheld Fan is a winner.”
