The Garmin Approach S12 is a good fit if you want clear on-course yardages and basic scorekeeping without a complicated golf watch. Its light, monochrome display and physical controls keep the essentials straightforward; the trade-offs are manual shot logging and fewer advanced golf and smartwatch features. It is best viewed as a focused GPS golf watch, not an all-purpose sports wearable.
What does the Garmin Approach S12 do on the course?
The S12 provides distances to the front, middle, and back of the green, along with yardages to layups, doglegs, hazards, and other course targets. Green View lets you adjust the pin position manually. You can also keep a scorecard and record statistics such as strokes, putts, greens in regulation, and fairways hit.
Garmin lists a round timer and odometer, and says the watch is tournament legal. Garmin’s current product page advertises more than 43,000 preloaded CourseView maps, while its owner’s manual and two 2026 buying guides cite 42,000. Those are claims from different pages and versions, not an independently audited count of the current database.
How easy is it to read and use?
The watch has a 0.9-inch (23 × 23 mm), 176 × 176-pixel sunlight-visible transflective MIP display. Its monochrome presentation favors legibility and simplicity over detailed color maps. Garmin lists the watch at 34.1 g, with a 43.7 × 43.7 × 11.5 mm case and silicone strap.

Physical controls and a focused feature set make it approachable for golfers who mainly need yardages. Golf Monthly’s 2026 roundup highlights its easy initial use and Big Numbers mode, while noting the lack of premium styling and advanced tracking. TechRadar’s 2026 guide also identifies sunlight readability as a strength and says the monochrome screen can make maps harder to interpret. These are reviewers’ assessments, not measurements from an independent standardized display test.
Does the Garmin S12 track shots automatically?
No. Shot distance entry on the S12 is manual: mark a shot, then use the displayed distance rather than expecting the watch to identify every shot or club on its own. Golf Monthly’s 2026 roundup likewise describes its shot tracking as manual.

Garmin says optional Approach CT10 sensors can add club tracking. The sensors are sold separately and are not needed for the watch’s basic GPS yardages or scorekeeping.

The available evidence does not establish a universal accuracy figure for the S12 or support a claim that every reading will be exact. TechRadar’s 2026 golf-watch guide calls its GPS accurate based on that publication’s testing; that is a reviewer assessment, not a standardized accuracy result independently repeated here.

For a GPS fix, Garmin’s owner’s manual advises a clear view of the sky and says acquisition may take 30–60 seconds in open sky. Garmin also recommends syncing regularly with a Garmin account to download satellite data that can help the watch acquire satellites. Trees, buildings, and other obstructions can make the conditions less favorable than open sky.
How long does the Garmin Approach S12 battery last?
Garmin’s 2021 Approach S12 Owner’s Manual rates battery life at up to 30 hours while playing golf and up to 10 weeks in watch-only mode. These are manufacturer maximum estimates, not guaranteed runtimes; Garmin says actual life depends on GPS use and that extreme cold reduces battery life.

Does the Garmin S12 need a phone?
No phone is needed for the watch’s basic on-course yardages and scoring. Pairing an iPhone or Android phone with Garmin Golf adds scorecard synchronization, live scoring, course updates, and software updates. Garmin lists Bluetooth Smart connectivity and support for both phone platforms.

How does the S12 compare with more advanced golf watches?
The S12’s value is its focus: essential yardages and scorekeeping in a light watch with a simple display. More advanced watches may offer richer color mapping, automatic shot tracking, or broader health, activity, and smartwatch features. Those capabilities vary by model, so compare the specific feature set and manufacturer-rated GPS battery life rather than assuming every higher-tier watch offers the same tools or that the S12 will always last longer in real use.
Choose the S12 if manual shot logging and a monochrome screen are acceptable in exchange for a simpler golf-first experience. Look at a more capable model if automatic tracking, color map detail, or extensive everyday smartwatch functions matter to you.
How do you set up and care for the S12?

- Pair a smartphone with Garmin Golf if you want scorecard syncing, live scoring, course updates, and software updates.
- Charge the watch fully before your round, as Garmin recommends.
- Before relying on GPS, move to a location with a clear view of the sky and allow time for acquisition. Garmin’s manual says a fix may take 30–60 seconds in open sky.
If nearby courses are missing after an interrupted update, Garmin’s manual recommends running course updates again, including through Garmin Express.

Garmin rates the S12 at 5 ATM. Its owner’s manual says, “The device withstands pressure equivalent to a depth of 50 m,” but advises against pressing keys underwater. Rinse the watch thoroughly with fresh water after exposure to salt water, chlorine, sunscreen, cosmetics, alcohol, or other harsh chemicals. Let it dry fully before charging; moisture or sweat on the contacts can cause corrosion. Garmin recommends charging to at least 50% before storing the watch for several months.
Is the Garmin Approach S12 worth it?
The S12 is worth considering for golfers who want dependable access to core course distances, a simple scorecard, and a light watch without paying for features they may not use. Its main compromises are clear: shot logging is manual, and the monochrome screen and limited everyday smartwatch features are less versatile than those of more advanced golf watches.
