The Fractal Design Refine 2 is a substantial, adjustable chair with a restrained look, but it is not a dramatic redesign of the original Refine. Its strongest reasons to consider it are the broad adjustment options, several upholstery choices, and updated lumbar and armrest features. The main cautions are its weight and tilt resistance reported by one reviewer, plus the need to confirm that its seat dimensions suit you. Existing Refine owners may find the changes too modest to justify an upgrade.
What changed from the original Refine?
Fractal Design describes the Refine 2 as a chair for gaming and everyday use. The company says the second generation adds flexible dual-pad lumbar support, armrest depth locking, revised foam and mesh, steel-bearing casters, a longer seat-depth range on fabric and hybrid versions, and a stated maximum capacity raised from 125 kg to 135 kg. Fractal also says the headrest can now reach a lower minimum position. These are manufacturer-reported changes, not independent measurements. Fractal Design’s product page and its comparison with the first Refine describe the updates.
Tom’s Hardware characterizes the changes as real but relatively modest, and concludes that owners of the first Refine may not find enough here to warrant replacing it. Its review identifies the locking armrests and less restrictive tilt limiter as useful improvements, while noting the chair’s weight and continuing tilt resistance as drawbacks.
How adjustable is the Refine 2?
The manufacturer lists synchro-tilt recline with adjustable tension and lock positions, seat-height and seat-depth adjustment, a height-adjustable and removable headrest, 4D armrests, and built-in lumbar support adjustable in height and depth. On the Fabric Dark model page, Fractal specifies a Donati Dynamic mechanism, a 120 mm Class 4 gas piston, 65 mm soft-PU casters with steel ball bearings, and a maximum back tilt of 125 degrees with 11 lockable positions. Those mechanism and tilt details are specific to that listed model. Fractal Design Refine 2 Fabric Dark specifications.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Synchro-tilt means the seat and back move in a coordinated relationship as the back reclines. Fractal’s FAQ notes that an ergonomic sitting position is individual, and points to the adjustable seat, headrest, armrests, and dual-pad lumbar support as ways to adapt the chair. That is general manufacturer guidance, not a medical assessment.
Will the Refine 2 fit your body and desk?
Fractal recommends users between 1.65 and 2.0 m tall and 60 to 135 kg. The company explicitly says these are recommended user figures, not minimum and maximum boundaries, so they should not be treated as a guarantee of fit. Compare the actual seat measurements with your own preferred sitting position and desk setup. Fractal’s recommended user-size guidance provides the figures and qualification.

| Measurement | Fabric and hybrid | Mesh | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seat depth adjustment | 425–500 mm | 450–505 mm | Fractal Design support, 2026 |
| Seat height | 490–610 mm | 485–605 mm | Fractal Design support, 2026 |
| Headrest height from seat | 580–700 mm | 580–700 mm | Fractal Design support, 2026 |
Seat depth matters in particular: a seat that is too long for you can make it harder to sit back comfortably, while one that is too short may not support as much of your thighs as you prefer. Check how the listed adjustment range corresponds to your body rather than relying only on the recommended height and weight range.
Which upholstery version should you choose?
The Refine 2 comes in fabric, mesh, and hybrid, each offered in Light and Dark colorways, for six configurations. The contact surfaces differ as follows:

The available sources do not establish controlled differences in comfort, temperature, or durability between these materials. Choose based on the contact surfaces you prefer, the specific dimensions, and the colorway; do not assume one version has been shown to outperform another.
What does the hands-on review reveal?
Tom’s Hardware reviewer Sarah Jacobsson Purewal reports that she assembled the chair alone without much difficulty, although unpacking the large box was the hardest part. She describes the Refine 2 as heavy and difficult to maneuver. She also found its tilt limiter less forceful than the original’s, but still too strong for her preference. Her husband, who was taller and heavier, found tilting and maneuvering easier. These are observations from one review of the fabric version, not predictable results for every user or upholstery option. Tom’s Hardware’s review.

That distinction matters if you move a chair often or want to recline with little resistance: the reported weight and tilt feel are practical questions to consider, but the review does not establish how every buyer will experience them.

Fractal states that mechanical parts have a five-year warranty and soft parts—including upholstery, lumbar pads, arm caps, and headrest—have a three-year warranty. The company also says the Refine 2 meets BIFMA X5.1 and EN 1335-1; ComputerBase identifies EN 1335-1 as Type C. These are claims attributed to the manufacturer and publication, not independently audited findings here. Check the current warranty terms applicable in your region. Quick Recap
Who should consider the Refine 2?
- Consider it if you want a subdued alternative to racing-style gaming chairs, value adjustment options, and can verify that the measurements suit your body and desk.
- Think carefully if you need a light chair that is easy to reposition or strongly prefer a low-resistance recline; the hands-on review flags weight and tilt resistance as possible annoyances.
- If you own the first Refine, treat this as a modest update rather than a wholesale redesign. The documented new features may appeal to you, but Tom’s Hardware does not consider them an obvious upgrade case for existing owners.
