Yes—conditionally. The Canon EOS R6 Mark II remains a capable full-frame hybrid camera when its local price is clearly below the EOS R6 Mark III and 24.2 megapixels, two UHS-II SD slots, and its existing video feature set cover your work. It is a less convincing purchase when the price gap is small or when you need the Mark III’s 32.5-megapixel sensor and newer video features.

There is no universal “good price” because body-only and kit prices, taxes, warranty, stock, and used condition vary by country. Treat the R6 II as a value decision against the actual Mark III listing in your market, not as a camera that is automatically cheap because it is the older model.

What the EOS R6 Mark II is in 2026

The EOS R6 Mark II is a full-frame mirrorless camera designed for both still photography and video. Canon lists approximately 24.2 effective megapixels, RAW Burst Mode up to 30 frames per second, two SD card slots with UHS-II support, and compatibility with Canon RF lenses. Compatible EF and EF-S lenses can be used with Canon’s EF–EOS R adapter; EF-M lenses are excluded. Canon’s specification sheet is the best place to confirm the detailed body specifications: Canon EOS R6 Mark II specification sheet.

Those specifications still make the camera suitable for weddings, events, portraits, travel, wildlife, documentary work, and hybrid assignments where dependable full-frame image quality matters more than maximum resolution. A 24.2-megapixel file provides room for normal cropping and large prints, but it leaves less cropping latitude than a higher-resolution body. Whether that matters depends on how tightly you crop and how large your final output is—not on the model name alone.

The core specification that affects the buying decision

R6 Mark II feature What Canon documents Why it matters
Sensor resolution Approximately 24.2 effective megapixels Enough for many editorial, event, portrait, travel, and general-purpose jobs; less flexibility for aggressive cropping than a 32.5-megapixel body.
Continuous capture RAW Burst Mode up to 30 fps Useful for short action sequences when timing is difficult.
Storage Two SD card slots, compatible with UHS-II media Supports faster cards and gives you two-card workflow options for assignments where a second copy is valuable.
Lens mount Canon RF lenses; compatible EF and EF-S lenses through the EF–EOS R adapter Existing Canon DSLR owners may be able to reuse lenses instead of replacing the entire kit.
Excluded lens family EF-M lenses are not supported Owners of Canon’s EF-M system should not assume their lenses transfer to the R6 II.

Canon’s product page also describes the camera and its RF-system compatibility: Canon EOS R6 Mark II product information. Confirm the current firmware and regional specifications before buying, particularly if a listing is old or imported.

What the EOS R6 Mark III changes

The EOS R6 Mark III is the direct successor. Canon positions it as a 32.5-megapixel full-frame camera and lists Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3 among its video capabilities. Canon’s comparison also identifies newer battery and full-size HDMI details for the Mark III. See the manufacturer’s comparison for the documented distinctions: Canon’s EOS R6 Mark III, R5 Mark II and R6 Mark II comparison. The Mark III product page is here: Canon EOS R6 Mark III.

Decision axis EOS R6 Mark II EOS R6 Mark III

More pixels are useful when you crop wildlife, produce large prints, or need to reframe a still for several deliverables. The newer log options can simplify a video workflow built around Canon’s log profiles and color grading. Those advantages do not automatically improve every photograph or make the Mark II unusable for video. They matter when they change your output, post-production, or purchasing horizon.

How much cheaper should the Mark II be?

Compare the exact local listings rather than relying on an international price headline. A body-only offer is not equivalent to a kit with a lens, and a used camera without the original battery or a meaningful warranty is not equivalent to a new, authorized listing. Check currency, tax, shipping, seller, return terms, shutter or usage history when available, and the items in the box.

For historical context, the US body-only estimated retail price at the R6 Mark II’s launch was $2,499, with availability expected in late November 2022, according to DPReview’s launch coverage: DPReview’s EOS R6 Mark II review and launch context. That is not a 2026 street price and should not be used as a current bargain benchmark.

A short-lived October 2026 promotion is also not proof of a permanent market price. Seasonal discounts can disappear, differ by country, or apply only to a particular kit. Treat any deal report as a dated observation and verify the live listing before deciding: TechRadar’s October 2026 promotion report.

A practical price-gap test

  1. Find a current R6 Mark II listing in the body configuration you actually need.
  2. Find the equivalent R6 Mark III configuration from the same market, including lens kit contents if applicable.
  3. Subtract the complete costs, including sales tax, shipping, card purchases, adapter needs, and warranty differences.
  4. Ask whether the saving pays for something that improves your work—such as a lens, spare battery, or UHS-II cards—without giving up a Mark III feature you will use every week.
  5. If the gap is small, price the Mark III instead. If the gap is substantial and your output fits the Mark II, the older body becomes the rational value choice.

This is a decision framework, not a fixed percentage threshold. Available evidence does not establish one price cutoff that works across regions.

Who is most likely to be happy with the R6 Mark II?

Photographers who already own Canon EF lenses

If you are moving from a Canon DSLR, the ability to use compatible EF and EF-S lenses through the EF–EOS R adapter can reduce the cost of changing bodies. Verify each lens and adapter combination before relying on it for paid work. EF-M lenses are a different mount and are not part of the R6 II compatibility described by Canon.

Hybrid creators who do not need the Mark III’s newer video features

The R6 II can make sense when your video delivery does not require the Mark III’s documented Canon Log 2 or Log 3 options, and when your workflow is already built around the Mark II’s supported recording modes. The right question is whether a missing profile or port detail blocks a real assignment, not whether the newer specification list is longer.

Event, portrait, travel, and general-purpose shooters

These photographers often benefit more from a balanced full-frame system, dependable storage, and suitable lenses than from maximum sensor resolution. The R6 II’s 24.2-megapixel files and two-card design can fit that brief, provided your cropping and print requirements are moderate.

Buyers who find a well-documented used or refurbished body

A used R6 II can be attractive if the seller states the condition, included battery and charger, card-slot condition, return policy, and warranty. Compare it with new and refurbished Mark II listings and with the current Mark III price; an uncertain used listing is not a bargain merely because it is older.

Who should spend more on the R6 Mark III?

  • You routinely crop heavily. The 32.5-megapixel Mark III gives you more native resolution for reframing and larger output.
  • You need Canon Log 2 or Log 3. Canon documents those formats for the Mark III, so they can be decisive in a log-based production workflow.
  • You want the newer battery and full-size HDMI details. Canon’s comparison identifies these as Mark III generation differences that may matter for your rig or shooting routine.
  • You expect to keep the body for many years. Paying for features you will genuinely use can be cheaper than replacing the Mark II soon after purchase.
  • The local price gap is narrow. When the two bodies cost nearly the same in equivalent condition and configuration, the successor generally offers more headroom.

Do not upgrade solely because the Mark III has a higher number. If your finished images are rarely cropped, your video workflow does not use the newer log options, and the saving funds a lens you actually need, the Mark II may produce the better system.

Lens, card, and total-system budgeting

The body is only one part of a full-frame kit. Canon’s RF lens range is the native path for the R6 II. Existing compatible EF and EF-S lenses can extend the system through the EF–EOS R adapter, while EF-M lenses are excluded. This compatibility can make an upgrade economical for one photographer and expensive for another, depending on the lenses already owned.

Budget for storage as well. Canon specifies two SD slots and UHS-II compatibility, but the camera does not include the cards you need for a shoot. Choose cards that match your recording requirements and buy from a reputable seller; do not assume that every inexpensive SD card offers UHS-II performance or reliable sustained writing.

Questions to answer before ordering

  • Will you use RF lenses, adapted EF/EF-S lenses, or buy an entirely new lens set?
  • Do you already own an EF–EOS R adapter, or must it be added to the budget?
  • Do your lenses cover the focal lengths and apertures required for your work?
  • How many UHS-II SD cards, batteries, and backup-storage options does a typical assignment require?
  • Is the listing body-only, and does it include the battery, charger, caps, and other supplied accessories?

There is no universally best lens or card capacity for every R6 II owner. Match those purchases to the subject, recording format, assignment length, and backup plan.

R6 Mark II versus other Canon alternatives

The R6 Mark III is the meaningful default comparison because it is the direct successor. Canon also includes the EOS R5 Mark II in its comparison guide, but the available information here does not establish a current local price or a workload-specific reason to make it the default alternative. Consider the R5 Mark II only when you can identify a concrete need for its higher-tier capabilities and have a budget that supports the complete system.

Alternative When it belongs in your shortlist What to verify locally
EOS R6 Mark III You need 32.5 megapixels, Canon Log 2 or Log 3, or the documented newer battery and full-size HDMI details. Equivalent body or kit price, warranty, stock, and whether those features affect your actual output.
EOS R5 Mark II You have a specific, higher-resolution or higher-tier production requirement. Current price, lens budget, storage needs, and whether its capabilities exceed your real workload.
EOS R6 Mark II You need a 24.2-megapixel full-frame hybrid body and can buy it at a clear discount. Condition, firmware, card slots, included accessories, seller, warranty, and the price gap to the Mark III.

Buying checklist for a new, refurbished, or used R6 II

  1. Identify the exact model. Confirm that the listing says EOS R6 Mark II, not the original EOS R6, another R-series body, or a kit whose contents differ from the headline image.
  2. Record the configuration. Note body-only versus lens kit, included battery and charger, regional warranty, and whether the seller is authorized or a private reseller.
  3. Check the Mark III at the same time. Use equivalent condition and kit contents so the comparison is meaningful.
  4. Confirm compatibility. List the RF, EF, or EF-S lenses you will use and verify the adapter requirement. Exclude EF-M lenses from the plan.
  5. Budget storage. Add UHS-II SD cards appropriate to your stills and video workload, rather than treating the body price as the complete purchase.
  6. Inspect used equipment. Ask for clear photographs of the mount, sensor area, card doors, ports, screens, and battery; check the return window and any stated usage history.
  7. Verify current Canon guidance. Recheck the official product pages and firmware information before payment, especially for imported or older stock.

Common mistakes that make the “cheap” R6 II expensive

Comparing a body-only R6 II with a Mark III kit

A lens can account for a large share of the apparent price difference. Compare like with like, or state clearly that one offer includes a lens and the other does not.

Using the 2022 launch price as a current value claim

The $2,499 US body-only estimate is historical launch context. It does not tell you what a camera should cost in your country in October 2026.

Ignoring the lens transition

A discounted body may be followed by a costly lens purchase. Existing EF and EF-S owners may have an easier path; EF-M owners should plan for a different lens system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying cards without checking the specification

The camera supports UHS-II SD media, but a card’s label, sustained write behavior, and authenticity matter for dependable recording. Include cards in the system budget and buy through a trustworthy channel.

Assuming a newer body automatically improves every result

The Mark III’s resolution and newer video features are advantages only when they change your cropping, grading, connection, or delivery requirements. For many assignments, the Mark II’s documented specification is already sufficient.

Bottom-line decision

Buy the Canon EOS R6 Mark II when you can verify a meaningful local discount against an equivalent EOS R6 Mark III, your work fits 24.2 megapixels, and you can use its RF or compatible adapted EF/EF-S lens ecosystem. Choose the Mark III when its 32.5-megapixel resolution, Canon Log 2 or Log 3, or newer battery and full-size HDMI details solve a requirement you actually have. In either case, judge the complete kit—body, lenses, adapter, cards, warranty, and condition—rather than the camera body in isolation.
